Oh man. I explored Bushong probably 10-15 years ago. I don’t remember the memorials then but I may have overlooked them. I recall the bank and the school building. We visited the decommissioned middle silo there also. Great trip! I really appreciate your content sir! Thank you.
The memorials in Bushong have been there roughly 5-years. I noticed them a few years ago while driving through the area and biking the Flint Hills Nature Trail just to the south of town.
That war memorial in Bushong is a very impressive structure. It goes to show that patriotism is not dead in many places in the US. I would love to see that some day. Thank you again for a great video Coach, looking forward to the next one!
Just before I reach Council Grove, on your right, there is a Japanese Prison Camp just as you enter into the town. The weeds probably have it covered up, but it is there
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Oh yeah.... a great weekend. We still have 3 poles to set in concrete..... I think it's the very hard soil/the rocks wait.... the tree roots. Be good.
I mentioned Aulne to you a few months ago. I am glad to see that you finally went. I have also been out to that poor farm a few times but I haven't been out there in a while and it is sad to see it so run down. Someone was still living in that poor farm when we were there. Thank you for the video.
Interesting small towns. I know exactly how you feel when that train went through, as I live in a town, that's near a railroad with a train going through all the time, day and night. It's especially hard to talk to anyone, when it goes through, blowing it's horn. One story I heard was that an older couple, at a town meeting, thought they could get the city to ask the train company if they could get the trains to not blow their horn at night, when the train was going through town. Didn't work. Thank you for the trip. Happy trails to you and God bless.
There was a poor farm in Adams county near me. Interesting a claw tub just hanging out. Those rock construction small town banks are always intriguing. Ahh the wind chimes inclusion was a nice touch.
Hey Coach. Good drone over all. Marion Poor Farm is a good look back at some tough times. Playground machine is in a grand pa class, yet, it's still moving.
Awesome video!!! Been to all 3 of these nice little unique towns!!! Think the memorials in Bushong were placed roughly 5-years or so ago, could be wrong about that. Noticed them about that time frame when was going through town and a sign was pointing the way to them. Also, the FLINTS HILL NATURE TRAIL is just to the south of town and there is amble parking to use.
Good morning! I've been bird dogging properties for sale in areas from your videos. The winters are long and hard up here in the mountains of far north central Washington... "and I'm old"(lol). Wouldn't mind finding a little house with a porch to watch the world go by and a little garage to park my truck in. Thanks for sharing your travels.
I noticed the military memorials are not on the Google street map for Bushong, so that is a nice addition to the area. All the places seem to be nicely kept. Love these out of the way places!
Wow! A real Poor Farm. My mom always used to threaten us when we asked for toys or candy while shopping, if she bought us our request every time we went shopping we'd end up on the Poor Farm. This is the first time I've seen an actual poor farm.
Bushong is a nice little town. Sad they lost so many in WWll, 4 in one day- June 6th. Beautiful memorial, may none of our service people ever be forgotten for the sacrifices they made for our freedom. Fitting segment for July. The train came in right on cue😄, couldn't have planned that better. Take extra care in this super heat, it can sneak up on you. Thanks for another great video. Stay safe and GOD bless
Cool video man, I grew up in Marion and spent a lot of time around the county, the Asylum had many ghost stories and was a favorite scare spot when we were in high school, everything looks pretty much the same as it did 20 years ago.. pretty cool bro!
The thing about the baseball players comes up a lot and Bushong was the only town I found that fit the bill. There was a ghost town down the railroad named Comisky that was part of the baseball lore. It was at Road A and Road 335, on the county line with Morris County. I saw a photo of the depot and I read they had a stock yard there. There's a cemetery north of the site, too. Keep up the good work!
As to towns named after famous people, in southern Oklahoma, near Ardmore, there is a small town named "Gene Autry" after the movie star. He is from the area and at one time it was thought he might move back to a ranch he had bought near the town. So the name of the town was changed to "Gene Autry" from "Lou". However, he never moved back, so the change was in vain.
Loved the video 😊 I’m friends with the owner of the Marion County Poor Farm. We helped her clean up the inside. Vandals have broke windows and have been stealing her personal belongings. This house has so much history. North of the house is a two story civil war lookout made of limestone just like the house. I have so many pictures of the inside. It’s heartbreaking to see it in its current state with the roof leaking and damaging the inside. Just be careful, it is private property. She sometimes gives private tours when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold since there isn’t any ac or heating.
love the outtakes! Another fascinating video. Love the bank with the corner entrance. Have we really progressed from poor farms when we have people living in tents in the streets of our major cities? I didn't hear them mentioned in the Pres. Debate. Maybe Kennedy did.
Down by Medicine Lodge are a couple tiny towns, Lake City and Sun City. Sun City had a "famous" bar by the name of Busters. I have no idea if it's still open??
@TravelwithaWiseguy Great! I'm going to look for it! We lived in Lake City for a few years when I was married. My girls would break into the abandoned buildings to look around.
I live in Florence seen your video of that it was ok. I have been to the Marion co. Poor farm and cemetery. They used to give a tour during Halloween. Years ago when I used to work at Florence Health care nursing home I would take residents on a drive because they wanted to see it. It is supposed to be haunted. Everytime I drove by that place I got a flat tire. Lots of ghost stories from these little towns.
Hello, I am very familiar with The Mariam Co. Poor Farm. I thought I’d shed some light on the grave marked “Negro Boy.” The cemetery there was not only for the farm but all of the county’s poor and unknowns. There were many unknowns in the days before genetic identification. The child or young man in that grave found frozen to death on a boxcar in the nearby town of Mariam, he had nothing on his person to identify him unfortunately. The townsfolk wanted to make sure he had a proper burial and stone which he was given as depicted.
The poor farm is on my mail route, so I go by it 6 days a week. The owner doesn't live there, but she has been there every day this week. I know the owner and have been inside sevral times. She's a bit eccentric to say the least. The inside is very interesting, and a little bit creepy. The upstairs has about 10 bedrooms and still has beds, furniture and clothes in them. The basement is the creepiest! You couldn't pay me to spend the night there! The owner's bedroom is down there too. She wants to sell the place if anyone is interested. Also, someone puts flowers on all the graves every Memorial Day❤

Good thing you visited the missile solo while you could. Someone bought it during covid, and it's private now.

I agree. I’m not sure I’ve seen such a significant one in such a small town!

Nice to see how well cared for these towns are
Agreed!
Setting on the porch watching it rain and watching Travel with the Wiseguy. Good morning
Love that 😊
#1 and the best way to start my day!

Good Morning, I love history, so many neat places to visit. Thanks again for Sharing. 😊
Good morning! Thanks for spending your morning here!
Bushong may be small, but it honors our nations' warriors. That makes it large in my eyes.
Absolutely 😊
There was a poor farm in Adams county near me. Interesting a claw tub just hanging out. Those rock construction small town banks are always intriguing. Ahh the wind chimes inclusion was a nice touch.
Yeah I was wondering about the tub 🤔 I could’ve sat at the church with the chimes for a long time 😊
We used to go to Marion Lake fishing when I was in my teens. Never heard of the Poor Farm, fantastic!
Awesome video! My mother's home! ❤
Bushing?

You missed the Atlas E missile silo near Bushong. You would have to use your drone to get footage as I'm sure it's posted.
Good to see them remembering the patriots who served and gave their lives. Very interesting towns 😊
I agree. Very impressive for such a small town!
This area has quite a history . Very interesting and impressive.
I think so too!
The Marion Poor farm had Darren Burrows from Northern Exposure fame lived there for a brief time in the early 60s.
Oh wow that’s interesting!

I was really impressed with Bushong! Fortunately I’m heading to Alaska this weekend so it’ll be much cooler than here in Kansas 😊 Thanks again!
Great content. You make me want to move to Kansas. Thank you kindly.
😊
Thanks for another interesting video, John.
You are very welcome 😊
My father in law used to live in Bushong. He originally grew up there. It was a big 2 story house on the north side of the main street heading east.

I got family in Hillsboro, we always called Tabor College : Friends University of Central Kansas.. you get the acronym 🙃
Did you leave the yellow flower on the Negro Boy’s grave? I love when you run into a local resident who shares about their town.
The flower was there when I arrive. There were a few flowers on selected ones. Very interesting!

Hello, from Marion county
👋🏼
I'm wondering, being from Ohio, how did you you become interested in small towns in Kansas?
I moved to KS in 2006 and grew up on a farm near small towns in Ohio. I’ve enjoyed learning about the history out here and how many small towns and ghost towns there are from the pioneering days.
When President FDR signed the Social Security Act in 1935, was the beginning of the end of County and State "poor farms".
I wonder if the poor farm is haunted.
🤷🏼♂️
We say it with two syllables; Bush Shong. Not sayin' it's right.
Interesting 🤔
