I always loved Bania’s reaction when he says Jerry should work out with weights and Jerry asks why. The transition from extreme confidence to deep existential confusion is amazing.
I would have just said either this is the meal or you can have the suit back... It’s very rare to see Jerry being a push over... he usually puts people in their place. I’m surprised he let Bania get away with it.
Technically the soup was his meal since he's the one who called him for that meal he owed him. Seinfeld did his part and that should have been the end of it.
I just want to point out how wrong it is to call someone up and collect on a meal that's "owed" to you, and then weasel your way into two meals because you aren't that hungry.
When Jerry asks why should he workout with weights, Bania looks like a robot trying to process something that hasn’t fully uploaded into his hard drive yet.
Wouldn't "there's no such thing as a free suit" be more accurate? Lol And I agree with Jerry...the "meal" is the act of taking time out of his evening to take Bania to a nice restaurant. If he decides to only order soup that's his problem.
I agree with Jerry as well. It is not the WHAT Bania ordered, they were still sitting together for a meal. Women get salad all the time (supposedly), and maybe a glass of water. That is still a meal. Bania was just a pain in the ass.
True, it is only a sitcom, and not meant to be taken seriously, but I think it's really a testament to the episode's writing that we are debating this issue. It shows how relatable a situation like this is.
The twisted mind of Larry David is so riddled throughout this show. I did not realize ti at the time because he was nothing more than a name in the ending credits. But after years of watching Curb and seeing Larry in interviews it is so obvious.
First of all, Jerry NEVER asked for the suit...Bania offered it. Bania then CALLED Jerry to make good on the meal. Bania knew he was going to a restaurant to eat a MEAL. Why would he have a hot dog prior to going out to eat when, HE BANIA, made the call to Jerry for the meal. He could have sat at Mindy's and had absolutely nothing and that would have completed the transaction...PERIOD, OVER AND DONE...
I agree that it would complete the transaction. But at the same time there is tragedy in this story. We kind of feel a little bit sorry for this guy who maybe has no friends and so much wants to be friends with Jerry. At the same time we completely understand Jerry's position.
Soup technically not a meal. When you order a meal they ask you if you want Soup or a salad. However, kenny wanted to go for his meal so what ever he orders is a meal
Bania GAVE it to him! It was SUPPOSED to be a gift meaning he isn't supposed to expect anything in return! Bania's being such a jerk trying to take advantage of Jerry.
There was a line in this episode (not in this cut) where Jerry says to Elaine "But the meal is the act of sitting down with him and eating." Jerry is in the right here and it's not even close, especially when Bania was the one who called up Jerry with the invite.
I love how this goes against the usual sitcom thing of someone pretending to like the annoying character. Jerry couldn't make it clearer he despises Bania and Bania doesn't catch on which makes it funnier.
I've noticed a hell of a lot of people commenting on these clips from the Seinfeld show decades ago - their ignorant comments clearly showing they've no idea what it was about, and had never actually seen any episodes - some not realising it was all about satire. People : Before you make a dumb comment, first go educate yourself, by downloading the original series and actually watching it. Until you do, you're missing out on the best comedy show that has (and will be) ever produced.
It’s even better that Bania is in the Soup Nazi episode, telling Jerry how great the soup is. They should have had Jerry say something like ‘but this isn’t a meal, right?’
There is a funny out take scene from "The Wig Master" Where Bania buys the same jacket with the crest, the crest Jerry, I like the crest. It's the best...
Banyan: I start off with curls. That’s good for the bicep. I do ten reps. Two sets. Now that is some classic Joe Piscopo styled comedy. Joe Piscopo says of his muscle and comedy phase: “What was I thinking?… Oh my God, that was stupid… You don’t do muscles and comedy - they don’t mix.”
Even though I’m sure somebody else pointed this out, it’s rude to call somebody up for dinner that you basically offered. Two, soups a meal 🤷🏽♂️ three it’s also rude to say you’ll save the meal for another time and you’re already at dinner.
At university I found many of the best opportunities include a free lunch. Social climbing is a great way to get around being kind of dumb. Look at Bania
Bania : You workout with weights ? Jerry : No. Bania : You should. Jerry : Why? This never works in real life. They(gym) always have something to say, always to convince you get into weights.
I always loved Bania’s reaction when he says Jerry should work out with weights and Jerry asks why. The transition from extreme confidence to deep existential confusion is amazing.
That’s fantastic!
I like your profile picture: Yoruichi from Bleach
Yea this show was so genius
1:48
I'm watching the episode now and I literally looked up the clip to see if anyone else mentioned his reaction
I love Jerry's COMPLETE disdain for Bania that he doesn't even try to hide.
@Juntao Bania’s a hack comedian. That’s his biggest dislike of him.
I used to have a friend like Bania. He gave me a brand new PS2, and it has been a nightmare since
tell us more bud
with free stuff, there is always a price
Wu Liwei That’s gold Wu Liwei, GOLD.
His friend had him knocked off. Rip Wu.
“Used to” hahahaha
As soon as Bania said he was saving the meal for another time, I'd have been up and out.
zufgh I'd go soup Nazi on him
I'd have thrown his suit back in his face the moment he suggested buying him a meal back in Jerry's apartment.
zufgh

I would have just said either this is the meal or you can have the suit back... It’s very rare to see Jerry being a push over... he usually puts people in their place. I’m surprised he let Bania get away with it.
Can we just acknowledge the brilliant acting by both characters at "Mendy's"?? Just sooo good.
Technically the soup was his meal since he's the one who called him for that meal he owed him. Seinfeld did his part and that should have been the end of it.
Nothing worst than somebody who thinks you're friends just because you briefly spoke casually at some point once.
clhound nothing worse than someone saying "nothing worst"
Agreed, nothing worst than that.
I feel sorry for those people. They're lonely.
THEY'RE JUST BEING FRIENDLY
Or cuz you went to school with them.
I just want to point out how wrong it is to call someone up and collect on a meal that's "owed" to you, and then weasel your way into two meals because you aren't that hungry.
The term "wrong" is a little intense don't you think
How about "rude, inconsiderate, and ugly"
This is not a grand moral concern, here.
Jerry didn't even want the suit in the first place, Bania just forced it on him so he can get a meal out of it.
It's very simply. Kenny Bania just wants friendship. This episode is genius because it works on human nature at multiple levels.
Yeah? You fucking think? That’s kind of the whole crux of the joke, you moron.
exactly, Bania doesn't care about the meal, he wants to stick around Jerry
When Jerry asks why should he workout with weights, Bania looks like a robot trying to process something that hasn’t fully uploaded into his hard drive yet.
The way he delivers the line and sits back is timing gold! 2:22
Wouldn't "there's no such thing as a free suit" be more accurate? Lol
And I agree with Jerry...the "meal" is the act of taking time out of his evening to take Bania to a nice restaurant. If he decides to only order soup that's his problem.

This isn't controversial guys,. No one disagrees with you. Only Banya, the fictional character.
True, it is only a sitcom, and not meant to be taken seriously, but I think it's really a testament to the episode's writing that we are debating this issue. It shows how relatable a situation like this is.
The original is TANSTAAFL. (Robert Heinlein, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.) There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
Lol
I love at the end George is trying to stay out of it. 😂
Why do they call it Ovaltine? The cup is round. The jar is round. They should call it roundtine.
_That's gold, Jerry! Gold!_
The spoon used to scoop it out is oval-shaped.

The twisted mind of Larry David is so riddled throughout this show. I did not realize ti at the time because he was nothing more than a name in the ending credits. But after years of watching Curb and seeing Larry in interviews it is so obvious.
If only Kramer had shut the heck up!
@UncleMikeNJ This is nothing compared to the episode where elaine was going to move upstairs and kramer was pushing jerry to loan her the 5000
First of all, Jerry NEVER asked for the suit...Bania offered it. Bania then CALLED Jerry to make good on the meal. Bania knew he was going to a restaurant to eat a MEAL. I would have given the suit back when he asked for soup.
Exactly...at this point Jerry was doing fine...he could afford an Armani suit. Heck, I wouldnt have even accepted the suit in the first place...

I would have given the suit to some British guy Elaine knows and used to like, but now can't get rid of.

It’s great that they brought him back several other times with his happy-go-annoying personality. 😂
the soup counts
Banya :Get the sword fish the best sword fish in the city the best jerry
Jerry :I'll have the Salmon
"The soup counts", the perfect Jerry-ism
lmao Bania just wants to hang with Jerry, I don't blame him, Jerry cannot not be funny
he should pay then
This is it!, this completes the transaction. Lol Seinfeld was hilarious. I miss this show 😂
This episode is by far Jerry's best acted one.
I'm with Jerry on this, the meal is simply sitting down in a restaurant and eating with him, regardless of if he ordered soup, or a steak.
Did Bania pay for his soup since he was saving his meal?
Good point
I think it's well implied that Jerry paid.
it's gold Jerry, GOLD!
There was a line in this episode (not in this cut) where Jerry says to Elaine "But the meal is the act of sitting down with him and eating." Jerry is in the right here and it's not even close, especially when Bania was the one who called up Jerry with the invite.
My verdict is soup is NOT a meal, BUT bania did not have a right to demand another sit down
We needed more Bania, Kenny and Newman. Those 3 really needed more air time.
From 1:10 to 1:21 there is absolute silence on Jerry’s end about Kenny’s request for a meal. F*ing brilliant.
I love how this goes against the usual sitcom thing of someone pretending to like the annoying character.
Jerry couldn't make it clearer he despises Bania and Bania doesn't catch on which makes it funnier.
It's pretty obvious that Bania is playing the game as far as he can so he can spend more time with Jerry.
Or so he could get free meals.
This is the episode I've watched more than any other 😁 of Seinfeld..
I've noticed a hell of a lot of people commenting on these clips from the Seinfeld show decades ago - their ignorant comments clearly showing they've no idea what it was about, and had never actually seen any episodes - some not realising it was all about satire. I'm 100% with Jerry on this one.
"It's the best, Jerry, the best"!!
maybe if bania would just realize that jerry can't stand him
He never does.
the facial expressions are the best

It’s even better that Bania is in the Soup Nazi episode, telling Jerry how great the soup is. They should have had Jerry say something like ‘but this isn’t a meal, right?’
All the actors were top notch
George's discomfort at the end make this all the more funnier.
George at the end! LoL.
I'd rather make my own suit lolol
I would have given the jacket right back to Bania. He knew what he was doing.
I like Kramer's flinch when Bania enters @ 0:03
It's so hilarious how he smugly raises his eyebrows & widens his eyes as he mentions "armani suit" as means to guilt Jerry lol
There is a funny out take scene from "The Wig Master" Where Bania buys the same jacket with the crest, the crest Jerry, I like the crest. It's the best...

Why did i feel that kramer was gonna say to jerry “what do we say to the nice man jerry”
And jerry says “sigh thanks” and hugs him
XD
Seems like Bania wanted to be friends with Jerry, so Bania gave Jerry the Armani suit.
Apparently, Jerry wasn’t that keen.
May be i can get my meal today. Jerrys expression after that. I am dead from laughing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would have made the soup count.
The "Buddy Boy" line is so Larry David
The Maestro must have told Bania to eat the hot dog.
Who told you to eat the hotdog? I didn't tell you to eat the hotdog!
Banyan:
I start off with curls.
That’s good for the bicep.
I do ten reps.
Two sets.
Now that is some classic Joe Piscopo styled comedy.
Joe Piscopo says of his muscle and comedy phase:

Yeah, you put Armani pants on a cutting board that smells of pepperoni and onions, very smart, Kramer.
This episode is basically Male Unbonding part 2
I didn't tell you to have a hot dog! Who told you to have a hot dog? The Maestro?
Vegetable lasagna told him 😂😂😂
Soup is not a meal, that's why they start/ give it before the actual meal.

Its made by Alec Bergggg

There’s no dinner. There’s not going to be any dinner. You’ve had a sandwich and two bowls of soup and that’s it!

Jerry should have given the suit to Kramer immediately after a dinner was mentioned.

If Kramer hadn’t kept going on and on about how generous Banja was, he would have never proposed the meal idea in the first place.🤦♂️
I mean, at least he didn't charge him for the suit and THEN ask for a meal. Then he would've owed Jerry double, money for the suit AND the meal.
I didn't tell him to get a hot dog either 😂
