I'm not stirring the pot here. As I'm scrolling down to read comments, I see some dude just went straight for a personal attack and completely missed the point of the video. Caleb shows the audience he, as one of the recruiters, went through the process of hiring a UI/UX designer. He gave the perspective of how many and how fast he had to go through the portfolios. Many many people still don't know what a UI/UX designer is. In the portfolios, the experiences they got are irrelevant. Some of them got mistakes which are good examples to pay attention to not repeat again. One thing is people use their experiences to charge $150/hr, which is ok, but they are just not right for the job.
What is the point of the video? Consider both perspectives as a recruiter and an employee. As a UI/UX designer, I definitely don't want the recruiter to go through a bad experience on my portfolio before they even hire me. Thanks for the tips, Caleb. Please update more videos. I would love to enter the freelance field. I currently don't have a job and I don't intend to get into one just to feel the void in the office.

@@KaYungCalebLai Caleb, I took my time to think about the topic that you have not covered yet. I'm processing and practicing every day because I'm in transition to UX. It's not easy. You cover the bigger picture and it helps me ground my goals. Please talk more about the freelancing portfolio. You did quickly mention it in the other video, but not too much on the differences.
To be honest, I feel intimidated comparing my portfolio to the professional ones on Dribbble. I'm working on it :( When I'm ready, I hope the slot is still available haha ...

As a designer how important is background knowledge in coding? I know there are a lot of websites now that you can use to build websites. I'm just trying to figure out what you actually do, is it the design itself you are paid for or the ability to build a website for a client designed the way they want it? I'm just getting started and love your videos!
thanks man! They pay you for the design work, some clients don't have access to a developer, so if you do that as well, you'll be able to make extra income :) but no, it's not necessary. I covered some of the points in this video.

Most of the portfolios and work was good. He was just specifically looking for ux/ui.
The point i got from this video is to have multiple portfolios and provide what is required by the hiring person.

@@abdullahqamar600 I agree yea. The job title was senior product designer, so I just filtered out the portfolios that are less relevant. My advice is still to find a niche for yourself and focus 100% on it.

Saying no is what hiring managers do. You skim through hundreds of applications to fill one role.
Your criticism of the all over the place portfolios is misplaced. You’re looking at multidisciplinary designers who have been in in-house or agency /firms jobs given their career structure is to go from jr,med,to senior to art director to creative director it’s only natural for them to have other pieces besides ui/ux now if your posting saids product designer then it wouldn’t the title of art director or creative director or multidisciplinary be you’re first clue to not even review the candidate. Your critiquing very well verse designers for not being specialist while their specialty is being a well rounded designer. Maybe don’t open and review those types of designers maybe just stick to product /ui/ux/ web designers applicants
Mentioned many times in the video that they are applying to a UI/UX position. I didnt select the portfolios, i just picked everyone in the list that’s charging $150+. If that makes sense

The video would have been better if you had pre-screened the proper ui/ux candidates that charged 150+ hr ,instead you wanted to critic all candidates then by making multi disciplinary designers seem not worth that amount , while you did state why are they applying to a ui/ux job posting wouldn’t it had made more sense to pre-screen them ? It just seems like you put down their work when the title of the video is reviewing designers charging $150+h and never explaining why their portfolio may justified it instead comparing it to a strict ui/ux specialist and going nah thi isn’t very good , all they have is just cards,shirts,etc,.. when most of these designer usually work as contractors for ad agencies and brand agencies like landor bbdo , widen and Kennedy, working on global campaigns thus justifying such a large price , You’re videos are usually very informative this was just not well organized. I bring this up because if someone is actually curious as to why there charging this price and what may justify it and look at this video and see someone just talking about product design it’s like what? Then why is the title not product designer charging 150+? My point is the title mislead the actual focus of what the content featured and then by accident making art directors and multi disciplinary designers seem like completely irrelevant to the price and then the title . I know the argument can be said a designer can charge whatever they want, all I’m saying some information on why there good just not a good fit you’re job posting would have been appreciated for those who may be new to this industry. However, i said in the beginning of the video that i’m going to keep it as raw as possible so you guys can experience a screening process in the real world setting (not hand pick for video purposes). When you have over 200 portfolios to review, you simply wont spend too much time on each if they dont catch your attention within 60s. Also for your point about high price, i’d still stand behind my claim that most employers wont pay $150 for those portfolios. If you position yourself as a multi disciplinary designer, aka a generalist, you wont be able to charge much. Most jobs won’t say that they are hiring a graphic designer.
