  • We welcome Ian and Marilena to discuss their work with The Good Ones, and what it's like to obtain visas and tour in the US with the Rwandan duo.
    Ian Brennan is Grammy-winning music producer (Zomba Prison Project, Tinariwen) and author of eight books. Since 1993 he has taught violence prevention for such prestigious organizations as the University of London, UC Berkeley, and the National Accademia of Science (Rome). His latest book is Muse-$ick: a music manifesto in fifty-nine notes [PM Press, 2021] and his ninth book, Missing Music: voices from where the dirt roads end will be published in early 2024.He has worked with artists as diverse as Fugazi, country legend Merle Haggard, Sleater-Kinney, and filmmaker John Waters. Since 2010, Brennan has produced over forty records by international artists from five continents (Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia) which have resulted in the first widely-released, original music albums from many nations, among them Rwanda, Malawi, South Sudan, Azerbaijan, Comoros, Suriname, Romania, and Vietnam. His work has been featured on the front-page of the New York Times, PBS television, and in an Emmy-winning segment of “60 Minutes” with Anderson Cooper reporting.
    Marilena Umuhoza Delli is an Italian Rwandan photographer, author, and filmmaker whose photographic work has been published around the world by the BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, VICE, Libération, Corriere della Sera, Le Monde, Rolling Stone, Smithsonian, and the New York Times, among others. She has written three Italian-language books about racism and growing-up with an immigrant mother in Italy’s most redneck region. She co-founded the first BIPOC-owned anti-racism academy in Italy, and regularly presents workshops throughout Italy, Brazil, the USA, and UK. She holds a Master's Degree in ‘Language for International Communication’ for which she wrote her thesis on ‘African Cinema.’ Additionally, she studied filmmaking at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).
