I’m recording my own guitar music with drummer and bass, after 1 year of picking up electric and I still click videos like this, always something you could use,(learn) thank you for being on RUclips, your rhythm guitar video helped my JAM sessions
Great lesson as always. I like your guitar too. I just so happened to do a deep dive on Chet Atkins last night! It was interesting seeing some of the techniques you've been teaching us listed as signatures of his.
I am always so surprised when I find iconic riffs like Whole Lotta Love are so simple and easy to play. It’s all in the groove, rhythm and timing (and syncopation).
Excellent Eric! Thanks for the video idea! Duh, why didn’t I think of that? I have a bunch of voice memos, and on a lot of them I can’t remember what I played lol. I have yo go back and figure them out again. 🤦♂️
If you use voicememo to record a new idea, just asign a random name, that comes to your mind. It makes it much easier to come back to that idea you had last week… and that random name created on the spot may be a sign by your „unconscious creator“… that leads to a new song. For me that has been helpfull.😊
Excellent advice. I still use voice memos, but I take the time to change the filename, e.g. "Blues progression in A", "Dm song idea using triads" or "Hendrixy thing in G", etc. That said, your video approach makes it simpler to recall where you did the riff on the fretboard. I usually take the time to call out chord voicings, scales and fret positions on my recordings.
Great vid, Eric. For the last couple of years I plop my phone down in front of the amp to make a recording whenever I'm practicing or noodling. Thought being, if i have an idea for a cool riff or stumble on a neat progression, i can just play it without pulling my phone out. Kind of annoying to scroll through all the recordings though 😂
Hey man, love your content and your way of teching. This past months a've been doing all of your courses on Truefire and i am having a blast with them. Learning and enjoying the music at the same time. Thank you for that! Do you have any plans on putting all that knowledge on a book perhaps? I would love to have Eric-sensei outside of the computer.
Hmmm maybe I use my transmogrifier, go forward in time, and skip all this learning stuff. That way when I get there I’ll already be a great guitarist… right? Thanks Eric for another excellent video 🤘🏻😎🎸
Eric, thank you for such clear presentation and instruction. I just recently purchased your Guitar Zen: CAGED and am thoroughly enjoying it. I highly recommend it to players. It is worth the $50 price. People, get the course. It’s the price of a single 1 hour lesson in my area! Anyway, since sitting and practicing can be uncomfortable., I have to ask you what type of seat do you have/recommend? Comfort is a huge component to effective practice for me and I don’t want my back and body to be sore from poor seating and posture. Thanks!
Thank you, Eric for teaching interesting techniques and modesty in playing (very important for guitar) at the same time. Could you make a video about the playing and tone of John Frusciante / The Red Hot Chili Peppers some time? that would be amazing! Love your style, man.
Taking a second to name your voice memos with the date and topic and carefully pausing and record where it matters can be huge. I have hundreds of ideas and jams saved like this. Only downside is the mic which I often sub by using a H2N into the usb port of the phone. But yes, videos are way better cause you can see your hands lol
The only thing i missed in this clip was something like "And now lets all hail the Rifflord Iommi.🤘🏻" But beside that it was nice to watch and educative. 👍🏻 BTW: The "i" in Riff stands for Iommi. 😏
Riffs come from rhythm... My ideas from noodling around are uniformly dull.. Now if i grab a sampler and lay out some drums first? Then even the simplest things can catch me
you had me at Calvin and then you locked it down with GBV
As a Canadian I'm pretty excited to see you wearing a Sloan shirt.
Yeah, seriously! So many great songs.
yeah, was not expecting that so many great songs also met Chris Murphy a handful of times great person.
As a fellow Canadian... you beat me to it.
I went record shopping with Jay Ferguson once. He’s a blast. True crate diver and music nerd.
I really love where you’re going with the thumbnails! Haven’t watched the whole video yet but I know it’s gonna be great!❤
Thanks! I've got a few different graphic designers I've been working with - it's fun to change things up!
This one is by instagram.com/heyitsmenate
@@EricHaugenGuitaryou should make merch with them! I’d buy some honestly.
@foxtrot000 Totally agree
I saved it to my watch later before the thumbnail changed, and now that it’s Calvin and Hobbes, I knew I had to watch
Eric makes every lesson digestable
I love your channel. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
That drop D riff.........chunky!!! Great stuff here Eric 🤘
It’s frankly amazing how you manage to maintain the gold standard quality of all your content Eric. We are not worthy, but thanks!
You pulled me in with calvin and hobbes, now I'm locked in with the smooth sounds
your videos are such an inspiration to just go there and have fun while learning more. not every guitar youtuber acomplishes that. cool

sometimes you can play in bands for 20 years and still learn from such videos
Been playing over 30 years and still learn loads from Eric's lessons!
Great advice and lesson-thank you
I’m inspired! Thanks Eric
When you played the syncopated rhythm I said “oh it’s the sweet Jane rhythm” you were one step ahead of me!
😊 Great lesson
😊 Great teacher
😊 Great reverse enginering
Always with the sickest guitar choices, for these videos 🙌
Really liked that chunky drive tone!
Every video you do is amazing! All of them.
Great video mate. 👍🏻
Was just binging your videos when you posted. I discovered you earlier this week and i really enjoy your slowed down and chill way of teaching.
Excellent video, such simple methods brilliantly presented, thank you.
Formed a duo with my drummer friend. Perfect timing!
Great lesson!!!! And love the Bill & Ted reference!!!!
Canadians loving the Sloan shirt!
Great inspirational video! (and you got me on each reverse-engineered riff...)
Love Sloan! They are so gooooood
Man, so many great riff ideas! 🙏🎸👍
Is that a Sloan riff at the end? Hell yeah!
Thanks Eric! ✌️😌🎸
Love the Sloan shirt my man
thanks man, you made me aware of that
Great lesson as always.
I like your guitar too. I just so happened to do a deep dive on Chet Atkins last night!

Chet is absolutely one of my all time faves - he makes it sound so easy!
More of this please!
Solid. Thanks Eric.

You are a saint sir !

Perfect upload time lol, just sat down
Thank you, thank you
Just when I’m experiencing a heavy dose of writers block it’s the Mighty Haugen to the rescue! Thanks for another great piece of content Eric! ✌️
If a riff is noodling around in your head...it has potential with many grooves😉👍❤🖖
Love it!

this is nice. you could do more like it!
SLOAN!
Do you think you could do a tutorial on the fish in the jailhouse solo by Marc ribot👀
I love to see pro guitar teachers using a capo. Most teacher I've known were prejudiced!
EATING PIZZA WHILE WATCHING HAPPY FRIDAY RIFF MAN!
Following for years and you trot out Cake. Dude... 🙌🙌
GBV! I had a feeling you'd like the riff/songwriting of Bob, Doug, and Tobin.
Hmmm maybe I use my transmogrifier, go forward in time, and skip all this learning stuff. That way when I get there I’ll already be a great guitarist… right?

The chair question is a no brainer...it's the one YOU feel comfortable in or on.
I use a roc n soc hydraulic drum throne as my studio chair - (knocks on wood) no back problems yet!
@@EricHaugenGuitarThanks, Eric. I appreciate that. It’s good to have a recommendation instead of spending a fortune to try a bunch out.
GBV!!! 🤘
Where is that thumbnail from, I haven't seen that in any Calvin and Hobbes comic
instagram.com/heyitsmenate made it for me!
OMG I freaked out when you didn't play de Bm on Sweet Jane the first time around.
Thanks, Eric. I'm looking forward to hearing more Haugen riffs. When do we get the next album? I've been enjoying your last two for years.
I've got a new EP almost done! Just gotta do the mixing (after I make more Truefire courses)
SLOOOOOOOOOOAN
How do these drum tracks happen? I am scared of using dire drum programmes (being an ex drummer), but yours always sound great
I'm a drummer too and I really like Toontrack EZ Drummer ruclips.net/video/UNtvt3tZkr0/видео.html
VU FTW!

Good idea!
DUDE!!! Next time can you show us the smoke on the water riff?!
😉
Hey EH, that Sloan sweatshirt is 👨🏻🍳💋
Excellent
Edit: oh shit I was leaving this comment right when you began talking Bill and Ted. Spooky 😮

Absolutely one of the masters of the riff universe
I just hate it when I realize the cool riff I just wrote is ONCE AGAIN Magic Potion by The Open Mind. It's an easy one to accidentally slide into.
That hollow body is gorgeous 😮💨
you rule Metuchen boy
Sooooooooo. Riff comes from rhythm. Oukaaaaaaaay
Watched this while eating pizza
thx for reminding me about my leftover pizza
Video and add a description 😀
1st step - Buy a Gretsch. Got it
Can we get some full song lessons again please says the person who only really learns chunks of songs haha
I'm working out an Amy Winehouse arrangement as we speak!
@ oooh
and the joke is, when he awoke his.
body was covered in coke fizz
Slooooooooaaan
no way i heard money city maniacs in the wild, are you canadian?

i am a tree and what is this
capo is guitar abuse!!! shame on you.
The obsession with riffs in today’s music has gone TOO FAR!!!! 😅
