  • In this video I talk about my 2016 Gibson J15 guitar, and share my opinion on what is great about this guitar, as well as my complaints with it.
    I also play it to give a you a better ideal of what this guitar sounds like using a large diaphragm condenser microphone, mounted ~9 inches from the guitar, aimed at the 14th fret with the EQ set flat.
    Hope this video is helpful, and feel free to leave questions in the comments below!

    I played quite a few guitars ranging from $1.3K to $4K when I bought my J15, which sounded really good. There was no real noticeable differences with the ones into $3K - $4K range. I later bought two Fishman Loudbox Performer and Artist monitors. I paired the J15 with the Performer. It sounds amazing.

    These are so good. I'm happy I have one. I think they made a mistake slimming down the body for the G-45. The J-15 has the full body dimensions and walnut and sounds great. They should have made the G-45 more like the J-15.

    Agreed with your sonic impressions-- seems to retain the deep bass of rosewood and note separation of mahogany, with a bit of brittleness where mahogany has a woodiness. Although the J-15 is plenty woody, too. And it still retains the oomph of the J-45. I didn't mind the tuners, but I switched them out pretty quick! Maybe mine were better. Mine also got a setup by the shop before it came home. Good for me to keep in mind. Suppose a tuner swap and a setup could add a lot to the price (I also got bone nut/saddle). Good review! These guitars might disappear into history, so I'm glad for the documentation.

    Nice review! I like the J15‘s clarity. I never considered a Gibson. I planned on buying a Taylor or Martin. All that changed after demo-ing the J15 and immediately knew it was, “the one!“ Right away I lowered the action and replaced the strings. Great guitar and I play it every day. Can you provide more detail about re-slotting the nut? I'm very interested to know. Thank you.

    • @Jhfstudio
      @Jhfstudio  4 года назад +5

      I'll start by saying that if you don't have any issues right now with the string height, or tuning stability on your guitar, then I wouldn't do anything to the nut. Now, with that being said, if the nut slot on a guitar is cut at too steep, or too shallow of an angle relative to the tuning machines, then it can cause the strings to "bind up" when you are tuning. Then when you are playing they will "slip" and become relaxed in the nut... creating tuning instability. There are some great videos online about how to properly slot a nut, but honestly it's a job best left to a luthier, because there are several factors to consider when slotting a nut, and to do a really good job you need special files... which are pretty expensive. I work on quite a few instruments, so I already have the files, but if I didn't I would let my luthier do it. They usually don't charge much to adjust nut slots.

      Sounds like a great guitar! The tuner upgrade makes a big difference on these guitars. That's my only big complaint with these, but it's easy enough to upgrade them.

    if you're guitar is going out of tune its not the grovers its the nut. I have one and it never goes out of tune.

    • @Jhfstudio
      @Jhfstudio  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment. I actually mentioned in the video that: I re-slotted the nut, and it improved the tuning stability a lot, but I still had tuning issues with that guitar. If I try to bend a string, then it always goes out of tune. I don’t have this issue on my other guitars. I tried different strings, and using graphite in the nut, but it never changed the issue. Which points me to the tuning machines. I generally like Grover tuners, but I don’t feel like these are the best. At least not for me personally.

      @@Jhfstudio makes sense. You must have gotten a bad pair which can happen for sure. I haven't had any issues with mine going out of tune and I play hard. Great video though. I love my j15 and yours sounds almost identical to mine. I have had it for a few years now and have noticed it is really starting to open up as I play it more. I replaced the element pickup with the LR Baggs Anthem which i feel better represents what the guitar sounds like.

    • @Jhfstudio
      @Jhfstudio  3 года назад

      They are great guitars. Especially for the money. I swapped the pickup in mine to the Anthem SL. I totally agree, it represents the true sound of the guitar a lot better than the Element. Sounds like you’ve got a great setup! Thanks for the input on the tuners. Maybe I did just get a bad set...

    • @Jhfstudio
      @Jhfstudio  3 года назад +2

      From the factory, J15's only have 1 strap button on the bass end of the guitar... a normal end pin. You have to add a second strap button, which is what I did. So the one you saw is probably real.

      JF Studio really good video and thanks for the reply! What’s your preference in acoustic tuners?

    • @Jhfstudio
      @Jhfstudio  4 года назад

      @@paulwillett7115 Thanks! Waverly Tuners are definitely my favorite. I love the look of the open gears, and they are super stable. I've never had an issue with a set of Waverly tuners, but they are also expensive. For a more affordable option I've had several guitars with the Grover 102 series tuning machines, and honestly they are great. Very smooth and stable. The problem with those on the J15 is that you would have to drill new screw holes in the head stock to mount them. I don't have any personal experience with the Grover 305's, but I think the 305C is what I would buy for the J15. The dimensions for the mounting screws are slightly different than the minis that came from the factory, but it looks like they are close enough that you shouldn't have to do any drilling or reaming to install the 305's . Hope this helps!
