FAQ: 1) The spitfires are used as they closely match the top speed of the the period-accurate BF-109E1-4 fighters(which are not in game) 2) Lots of people saying the A-10 can fly faster and higher than the warbirds. That is only correct if the A-10s are not carrying high weapons/fuel.
I do believe if you'd have assigned 2 Warthogs to focus _only_ on Spits, armed with 2 sidewinders each and nothing else but guns ,(basically a slick Warthog = improved performance), you could have destroyed those Spits earlier. Use the Sidewinders 1st, then guns, then RTB, rearm and wash rinse repeat. Keep those two A-10's double teaming the Spits until you get em all, then loadout with Mavs & cluster bombs & straight make them tanks get _REKT_ lol,,,, 👁️👀👁️🤣😂
Don't forget it's the same for them. Both planes performance should improve the longer they fly(less fuel weight) and the a10's after they burn through half their rds. & bombs.
There should be an interceptor squad flying high cap to protect the ground pounders. Assigning an A10 to act as an interceptor is a wasted sortie IMO. Even a squad of Typhoons or Hurricanes or Brewsters would have been period correct and viable. And this is really my biggest issue with this mission. Every moment wasted dealing with Spitfires was a moment when the A10s were off mission. Other than this issue, I found the mission and video quite entertaining, although I would love to hear from actual A10 pilots to see how they would proceed with this tasking.

The A-10 is very, very good at what it was designed for - but sadly nothing much else. I'd love to see this mission repeated with 1 or 2 F-16s on the A-10s side.
I would rather a squad of A-10 helping the entire Market Garden operation. Battle of The Bulge being Nazis' last hail mary attempt out of desperation while praying the weather is in their favor, and Patton still weeks away from helping the entrenched allies.
Another tale that was related to me regarding how low the A-10 can operate: Two Hogs flying alone, one pilot says to the other, "Think you might wanna pull up a bit?" "Why" "Check your rear view mirrors." Dirt was coming up over the tail.

Cool video. But curious; IRL wouldn't launching the A-10s so close together cause issues with the ones taking off behind the lead as far as dirty air? Maybe not; they aren't heavies or anything but was wondering.
What title and platform are you using? I absolutely love what your doing here. So much better than I’ve seen elsewhere.. love the content and kit breakdowns.
This was actually an interesting vid: I was thinking why drones are not used more for attacking positions like these and thinking that an aircraft like the A10 would be a great platform for strikes like these but when you see the sim (and even some of the sea battles you have simulated) that either your targets are not always easy to see, or in the grand scheme of things, incoming weapons are extremely small and hard to hit: CWIS incoming rounds don't look as effective when seen from the viewpoint of the missile, and tanks and trucks are tiny specs to attack as targets of opportunity unless you have some advanced sensors allowing them to stand out (passive ir at night), so throwing up drones and have them hunting for a tiny target over a wide area is a lot harder than it looks!
A bit late for giving advice, but these missions really should be set up to have 33% casualties as the final goal. In a real war, that's more than enough to render an enemy force incapable of waging war, due to wounded, lost supplies, and just plain ol' morale.
@@grimreapers It seems to me that your goal is simply to destroy a certain number of ground targets before they cross the border. The A-10 is an excellent ground attack aircraft but is so slow you are losing them to spitfires. The F-15E would be able to destroy ground targets and make mincemeat out of the spitfires as well. Haven't looked up the F-16, but with proper bombs, it should be able to do so as well. Once again, just a thought.
Pretty sure there was a point at which the Panzer divisions were forced into a massive single-file. French leadership received reports of this armor backup and didn’t respond until the blitzkrieg was fully underway. Guessing the A10s would’ve annihilated that column without much fuss.
Could you load say two A-10 for air to air shoot down the air superiority fighters and then rearm them for air to ground? Oh and you’re right an A-10 can’t out turn a spitfire but you could out climb it, the spits had petrol driven engines and although they did come up with a solution late in the war it would be at this point. Good luck
@@grimreapers you did good, you won, it’s nearly Christmas and that’s all that matters. Well done to Cap on the successful deployment of the avenger against German armoured formations, he was fearless in using it, really nicely done 🙂
I think Simba wanted to do that but then he got Spits on his tail and decided the best thing he could do was drag them and any others he could get to pick him up away from those performing ground attack. He kept several of them off the other guys for quite a while.
@@christophero55 Yes, he did and that was some inspiring flying to keep them away for as long as he did and the use of the triple A at the field was also a great call (I think that was Cap). I think this really highlights the skill and dedication of the allied pilots who almost closed the Falaise pocket (which I think the Grim reapers recreated) and actually how difficult that would have been with the aircraft of the day. Anyway Merry Christmas and a happy new year 🥳
This might be a stupid idea, but since a lot of the time was spent on traveling and also outrunning spits, I wonder how well switching to a wing of F/A-18Cs would go. Sure, they don't have that gorgeous GAU-8, and might carry a couple less missiles/bombs, but you can get to/from the battlefield much faster. You also wouldn't have to evade spits at all.
@@grimreapers yeah that would be difficult. Assuming a wing of 8, each F18 can carry 4 CBU-99s, so thats 32 bombs. If each bomb manages to kill say, 2 tanks, 64 tanks would die in the first run. You would then need to land, resupply, and take off again, and do another run. Could you do two runs in 40 minutes? I don't know, maybe?
I can barely imagine how a squadron of A-10 jet fighters can aid the Allies in repelling the Nazi invasion through the Ardennes Forest. The Führer would NOT SEE that coming! I definitely love this video and y'all nailed it!
Question...How much internal fuel does your A-10 hold? When I was a crew chief my jet held 10,400 lbs and I noticed that different jets seemed to hold a slightly different amount. Curious as to what these hold.
Great Job defending France guys! I know this sencro was gameified but having the historicalish French and British units to atleast get free kills and buy time for let's say the Germans to kill a command unit at the airfeild would have been nice. They really dont use anything big or fancy honestly DCS is probably similar to whats in use now, or a good flight simulator of some other type. Not everything (actually almost nothing) about everyday military activities is some super secret black ops NSA james bond cool guy space laser special operation, just because its the military. Actually, most of the time its kind of the opposite, trying to use the least/less advanced, cheaper thing to try to save an extra nickel and going for the lowest bidder's entry on anything that isnt absolutely vital to save millions of dollars/lives
Fun watching you guys play. Hell, you make me want to play the game and I don't have flight gear! Can anyone tell me what the system requirements are for this game? Thank you in advance!
I Just noticed The bird you're flying. Thank you. I love it when my hometown ANG gets a nod. Seeing that Raven on the side is sweet. I love hearing them when they are getting some sky time. Go Ravens.
To deal with the more maneuverable Spits, would it work to pair up and use the Thach Weave? Seems like a somewhat similar problem to the one the F4F and F6F faced with the Zero.
Thats what I was thinking, everyone flys with 4 sidewinders and work in buddy teams attacking the columns. If a Spit shows up, perform the weave to get a good shot with the sidewinder and then back to attacking the columns.
This game is so great because many of us wanted to be pilots but never made it because of poor eyesight, heart problems, poor grades, unwillingness to join the military etc. I personally don't want to surrender my freedom in exchange for the chance to pilot an eagle for few years. You can't fly jets to 30 years in the air force. If you could, every 30 years the whole crop of pilots would retire and it would cripple the air force's fighting power. Instead they keep sending older pilots to a desk and bringing in young ones. The correct balance is 50% veterans and 50% new recruits. Thus at no time will the air force experience a mass retirement of pilots a year before a war. Instead the air force experiences a balanced, staggered retirement rate. These people study everything, they know things. To whom it may concern, my 3 favorite aviation art books are : - Aviation Art by Lou Drendel - Warbirds by Adam Tooby - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
This game reminds me a lot of the combat simulator "game" we were testing out when I was stationed in Okinawa with my training department. It didn't really have a name but we could do from team size to squad and platoon and higher. Each person would be set at a computer individually and we could have actual individuals acting as aggressors. It had everything from motor transportation. I dont remember being able to use air assets at the time. We could set the system up for all sorts of situations and such. It was pretty cool. I thought that it would be a very good training tool.
What I found odd was the resilience of the German vehicles to bursts from the GAU-8. Particularly since the Panzers and StuGs only have ~10mm of armor on the upper surfaces. I’d have expected any of its rounds to be capable of punching through armor that thin. And a single one of the HE-I shells detonating inside the crew compartment of a 251 would be utterly catastrophic. I’m also kind of surprised that the game doesn’t offer the 109E, nor presumably the Spit I or II, since having access to the BoB era would be such a huge draw.
Ground attack with no FAC, interesting but if I might suggest proper air support. Since there are no qualms about the A-10's then how about Mig15Bis as cover?
Grim Reapers should give out mission ribbons and accommodations for outstanding performance and piloting for these scenarios. Simba, for instance, would be highly decorated. :P
They are designed with forward operations. They can land on a road and be re-supplied from a C130. Pilot might not even get out of the seat. Important when you are breaking up a Soviet blitzing thru the Fulda gap.

The A-10 is very, very good at what it was designed for - but sadly nothing much else.
I'd love to see this mission repeated with 1 or 2 F-16s on the A-10s side.
@@macsmith2013 the A10 is the BEST CAS aircraft besides the AC130
Nice video 👍 would a slightly shallower approach give you more time to use the cannons effectively?
If you've got one engine, why not tell R2 to fix the other one?
I'm so confused.
That was epic. I enjoyed this far too much, thanks a lot
What if you did a modern dog fight with a ME 262 with a current fighter jet? Really made my curiosity with these Modern Warfare vs WWII scenarios.
Nice job reapers. I wonder how this flight of A-10's would have affected the battle of the bulge?
I would rather a squad of A-10 helping the entire Market Garden operation. Battle of The Bulge being Nazis' last hail mary attempt out of desperation while praying the weather is in their favor, and Patton still weeks away from helping the entrenched allies.
That one Hanomag gunner firing madly with his MG34 in a head-on duel with an A-10A before being converted into a fine red mist
Much better guys! Fun stuff
If you ever need another A-10CII driver hit me up. I spend most if my time in DCS in the hawg
Yes we do!
@@grimreapers when I get back home from Christmas I'll hit yall up. I need a break from DDCS anyway.
Another tale that was related to me regarding how low the A-10 can operate: Two Hogs flying alone, one pilot says to the other, "Think you might wanna pull up a bit?"
"Why"
"Check your rear view mirrors."
Dirt was coming up over the tail.
giggles...It ist quite fun to watch all of you Yanking und Banking. I haven't Flight Sim in
so long it seems. Some of you might be impressed by das many different, very old,

maybe I should break out my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro again, get das DCS, und find your

I enjoyed much watching your mission teamwork...Liked und Subbed. :-)
Have a fun day und be safe. :-) Auf Wiedersehen aus Wiesbaden
Pickles was the best part :)
That was a truly exciting and immersive scenario, thanks Grim Reapers!
Cool video. But curious; IRL wouldn't launching the A-10s so close together cause issues with the ones taking off behind the lead as far as dirty air? Maybe not; they aren't heavies or anything but was wondering.
29:00 - Good Pickles, Good Good Pickles....
28:32 - Pickles issuing instructions from forward airfield!
I want dinner daddY!
why at 25:19 is he diving down at the runway like a kamikaze? does he not know how to land properly?
I love it when you land and the gun sight goes full hurr-durr!
A bit late for giving advice, but these missions really should be set up to have 33% casualties as the final goal. In a real war, that's more than enough to render an enemy force incapable of waging war, due to wounded, lost supplies, and just plain ol' morale.
Just bought my first proper stick Winwing Orion! Not bought myself a toy for years and that was a guitar about 4 years ago!
Good man Jonny!
Much cleaner attacks this time around. I noticed this time you attacked the columns lengthwise and the results were much better.
Roger, listened to you guys, or tried to.
Nicely done!
lol Pickles is having a moment!
Good luck
I wanted someone to do that yes.
Anyway Merry Christmas and a happy new year 🥳
CAP: “Stay fast and don’t turn fight the spits”. All other A10s: “Ok, we’ll turn fight the spits.” CAP: “Fucking morons.”
lol welcome to GR...
OK, I guess. lets stay focused on more real-time stuff. love ya`lls work, keep it up, and thank ya guys and gals . . . your stuff is cool as hell:)
They could operate with impunity but I doubt they could kill 128 in 40 mins?
Give Pickles a pet once in a while Cap, I'm sure Pickles is a good cat.
Question...How much internal fuel does your A-10 hold? When I was a crew chief my jet held 10,400 lbs and I noticed that different jets seemed to hold a slightly different amount. Curious as to what these hold.
I think just over 10k?
Great Job defending France guys! I know this sencro was gameified but having the historicalish French and British units to atleast get free kills and buy time for let's say the Germans to kill a command unit at the airfeild would have been nice. Still fun to watch! Which could you please do a textbook A-10 Cold War gone hot mission where you take off a mile or 2 away from the front and help stop a russian advance with the battle space being contasted 50%/50%?
if this is a publicly available simulator , i'd love to see what the modern armies are playing with now :D
yup
Some proprietary nightmare that was developed twenty years ago and ten times over budget.
I’ve flown an F-16 combat simulator and honestly less visually stunning, though a fully functional cockpit is spectacular.
Reading my mind...
Thank you and your guys for making great content.
Best gaming channel on yt
To paraphrase an old Saturday Night Live skit: What if Spartacus had an A-10?

One of the A10s appear to be from the MDANG, possibly based at Middle River MD
Fun to watch. Although if there was any SAM's that A10 is toast at 400kts :P
Was hoping to see AA with the A10 Guns against a spitfire :P
Adding some CAP planes, even WW2 types to cover the attack air craft would be more realistic, and helpful.
agree but we really wanted the hard challenge.
A10 is amazing ac !!! this time I want to see some good action boyzzzz :-)
Grim Reapers should give out mission ribbons and accommodations for outstanding performance and piloting for these scenarios. Simba, for instance, would be highly decorated. :P
cool
Where did you get the information for speed and altitude of the A10 when fully loaded (16, 000lbs)?
47:11 reminds me of the Barron knights:- dentist song "no the right"
Well can the A-10’s land, refuel, and rearm fairly quickly? Especially refuel and rearm the gun. If so they could eat the lines of tanks up
They are designed with forward operations. They can land on a road and be re-supplied from a C130. Pilot might not even get out of the seat. Important when you are breaking up a Soviet blitzing thru the Fulda gap.
The record for the process is 12 minutes, but that was at an airshow type environment. I was an Air Force refueler (Who the Hell??) and have seen the process be done consistently around 20 minutes.
@@MMProductions6 Let me guess. As long as you aren't down at the end at Nellis. Then it takes 6 hours. Lol
I worked on the fuel system there, and there are only 4 actual pumps. Once you are fueling 4, it just gets slower. I heard the complaints but unfortunately, the airforce to too cheap to add pumps. Lol
@@steve9216 Also true. I was at Pope so outside the random C-17, the pumps were all for the A-10s.
@@MMProductions6 I felt bad at Nellis. I programmed the fuel system and my friend Eric (now retired A10 guy) bitched about it. There was nothing I could do.
I knew yall could refuel anywhere because he told me about practicing with the Australians in Afghanistan. He said they brought a BBQ in on the C130. Lol
I appreciate all of y'all that served BTW. No matter how people feel about the wars, yall answered the call. Much thanks 😊
I thoroughly enjoy watching these gentlemen and ladies, if applicable..

Are sidewinders heat seeking ? Wouldnt radar guided work better against prop planes ?
So the big as inverted v-12 doesn't put out any heat?
Yeah, the Sidewinder is IR guided, and it is the only AA missle the A-10 can carry as it has no radar.
@@macsmith2013 it does have ground facing radar but the A-10 would have to point up 35% to use it in AA. Not very useful using it that way.
@@timesthree5757 Ah, thanks for the info, learned something today.
Regarding the usefulness against AA targets, can't the A10 fly inverted and use the radsr against higher flying airplanes? 🤔🤣
