    That light ticking is normal. the E30 motor is known as the "sewing machine" for a reason. if it is loud it could need a valve adjustment, but its normal for those engines

    • @ScrubRadius
      @ScrubRadius 3 года назад +11

      Can vouch for this, I owned a few in the 80s when they were new. It’s almost impossible to get the valves perfectly quiet over all temperatures even when fanatically adjusting them.

      Yep, mentioned it in the last vid. M20's are tickers. A valve adjustment could help (I forget the clearance, been awhile since I had my e30's). But that amount of tick in the video is pretty normal for that engine. E30's are amazing. They're getting real expensive too. Hope I can pick another one up before the prices go crazy(er).

    E30s are most definitely some of the best built bmws out there. Buddy traded his mustang for one sitting in the field for 6 years. Got a battery and a fuel pump relay and we drove it home an hour n half away. All the check lights worked and didn’t even have the c.e.l. on. We’ve both also had e90s and both had to run through our entire cooling system lol.

    With these older bmw engines (m10, m20, m30) it's very important to ensure that the spray holes of the oil distribution gallery are open/free and that the correct washwrs are used to install that oil gallery.
    If there is no oil flow the rockers and rocker shafts will wear fast.
    The Rolls Royce connection with bmw came way later then the e30.

Id definately reccomended a high zinc additive oil to protect the contact surfaces of the rockers. It also helps quiet it up slightly compared to other synthetics.

    Here is a little trick we used to do back 40+ years ago when I worked as a mechanic. Take a spray bottle with water in it and while the engine is running at 2000 RPM or so, squirt the water into the intake. The water turns to steam and it causes the carbon to soften and break loose. I used to do it with engines that were so carboned up that they had spark knock that wouldn't go away when the timing was set to factory specs. When you are pouring the Seafoam into the intake you are doing basically the same thing.

    I'm so jealous of that car, i really want one. They're pretty much unobtainium here in Sweden and if they're for sale they are almost 100 % of the time badly modified with turbo builds that will never pass inspection, lowered so much it's like riding on pogo sticks etc.. Oh and despite these issues, they are WAY expensive. Like 6-7-8-9-10 thousand dollars.

    • @williamwade7059
      @williamwade7059 3 года назад

      You guys have emission inspections?

    • @GeFeldz
      @GeFeldz 3 года назад

      @@williamwade7059 We have whole car inspections including brakes, suspension, structural and floor corrosion, emissions, VIN numbers, conformity (like if there's a turbo on a car that didn't have one from factory), horn, washers, windshield, wipers, tire wear, etc...
      These are done every year on cars up to 30 years old and every other year for cars 30-50 years old. 50 years and older, if the car passes one inspection it's exempt from regular inspections. The police can still inspect the car in a traffic stop and mandate a new inspection at an authorised inspection station.
      Mechanics can repair and certify certain faults after a failed inspection, not all faults, but the inspections are done by certified inspection stations that are not workshops.

    As much as I love this channel... as a bmw guy. It’s different when you’re working on bmw’s, the epitome of entertainment for me.

    So, fuel and brake lines, pinion and axle seals for the diff, exhaust, trans pan gasket (and possibly pan), oil filter housing gasket and sender o-ring, valve cover gasket and some paint/body work.
    Not bad Alex!

    Ticking is normal. Do a valve adjustment and I’ll be quieter. They all sound like sewing machines when healthy. Also. The heads are so easy to take off that lots of people including myself just do that and manually clean everything off.

    Great video ! Before you repaint, pick the worst panel and try paint correction first. Sometimes "dead" white paint will come back

    I would say just polish the car and wet san the rusty areas and ceramic coated on top giving the patina look and maintaining the original paint.

    A few minor points, the '89 e30s didn't have clear coat, they had rubbed buffed and polished single stage paint. Do the timing belt and water pump ASAP. Do not rev it too much while sitting still, it will kill the transmission. The oil pressure sensor will leak through it's center. The exhaust rust is just outer sheet metal over insulation to help the cat heat up, easy to cut off and your actual cat and resonator are likely fine.

    Hi Alex excellent video as per normal
    Please do NOT get rid of the bbs split rims!! Here in the UK they are iconic and worth a fortune. The copies alone are $1000 and refurbished ones $3500 A set-probably worth more than the car you could put them on eBay and someone in Europe would bite your hand off for them!
    They just have to stay with the car and be refurbed in gold please
    Can’t wait to see this finished as it just reminds me of my best friend who we lost to cancer last year and he had an immaculate E30 325l black sport that was so much fun with the iconic exhaust note in the 90’s,good memories

    this is a common thing in barnfind cars.....often valve seats will not seal but if you can even get a couple cylinders to fire the movement frees up every other valve.....fun fact the rocker tappets are often offset on purpose by design.....when they push the valve down they also cause a slight spin rotation

    The E30 was the best BMW ever! I have personally owned 2 of them (and regret selling both). The engines are bullet proof if you keep the oil clean. Some of the best analogue experience driving will be done in this car! I will drive from Ottawa Ontario Canada to pick it up if you are bored with it! Ticking is injectors very normal for that car.

  • @jozuba
    @jozuba 3 года назад +1

    I saw you can adjust the valveclearance. Maybe this is causing the ticking noise beside the injectors

    That bit of insullaton on the firewall over the trans tunnel holds moisture and is one of the most common causes of rust on these

    Ticking is 100% normal for the m20, it should sound like a "happy little sewing machine". That being said, adjust the valves to be sure. It's also easy to clean the TB and ICV which will both help, and next time you Seafoam, use the tiny vacuum line on the passenger side of the intake manifold. Oh and if that little tag on the diff has an "S" on it, it's an LSD (there should also be an S painted on the underside of the pumpkin)

  • @mbasiletti
    @mbasiletti 3 года назад +1

    That tick is the sound of a healthy M20- you could adjust for less noise, but you may lose a bit of power in the balance.

  • @machtschnell7452
    @machtschnell7452 3 года назад

    Read the MSDS. Seafoam has no cleansers. It is basically just light oil like MMM.
    Need to convert this to 5MT or 6MT.
    Life in the rust belt. All the metal lines need replacement.
    Convert to AGM battery once the tray is repaired.
