I thought it was neat too but that’s because I drive semi trucks and I was always told that’s how diesel is ignited in the engine. Diesel by its self isn’t that flammable, so they use a similar process to ignite it.

I saw the exhibit in Chicago years ago, such an impressive feat. The whole biomechanical feel about them is fascinating but a little creepy. Gonna buy this one for sure
I have the first one. It was fun assembling it and even more fun playing with it. It works on wind but I have a handheld cordless fan that I use to keep it “walking”.
Are there any practical or fun uses for the piston thing? I think it’s so cool! When I ask that, I’m talking about this specific product, not the same mechanism in engines.
Is there any real danger with the piston one? That would make a great demonstration, but I can imagine that if the wrong material were to be put inside, it could form a projectile, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way thanks for sharing!
If you lodge the cotton in the tip of the rod and you don't screw the retaining cap on you can pull the piston up after slamming it and the cotton can be used to start a tinder bundle to make a fire.... Or just buy a survival one that doesn't have a retaining cap but it's not see through. For some reason I like the idea of seeing it in a survival situation.... I'm sure everyone would wrap it w/ paracord anyways so it kind of doesn't matter. 😩😂
The really cool thing about that piston is that's exactly how your car works, or more accurately, diesel trucks. In a diesel truck, the cotton is replaced with diesel fuel, and what happens when the piston compresses that air and heats up that fuel is that it creates an explosion, and that explosion pushes the piston back down, and that turns the cam shaft, which causes another piston to compress the air in it's cylinder, and so on and so on. For your gasoline vehicles it's almost the same, except they use spark plugs (just an item that literally creates a spark) to ignite the fuel in the cylinder, since gasoline burns at a higher temp than diesel fuel, so it needs a little more umph to get it going.
