Thank you for making this video!! We found a Minerva Loom in someone's garbage heap! It's our new treasure. My husband and I watched many videos but this one was so valuable to dress our loom. It helped immensely!! It took us three days and a few meltdowns but we persevered. :)
This is the clearest explanation I have _ever_ seen for how to do this! Some really clever suggestions too...I would never have thought of securing the lease sticks that way... Thanks!
I haven't woven in a long time so I watched this as a refresher to make sure I had not forgotten anything. The one thing that I DID remember is to NEVER comb through the warp as you beam or to "thumb" it as she described it. It just makes for loose ends and makes a mess later on. Grasp the warp firmly and give it a good shake. You can even thwack it against the bottom of the beater and the breast beam. You get much better results that way. Also, I found that using sticks or cardboard at first when beaming helps take care of all the lumps and bumps caused by the thickness of knots, apron rods and strings, etc. After a round or two with cardboard, strips of kraft paper or paper bags (IF you can even find them anymore!) are fine.

Wow...I've been weaving for 5 years now on a rigid heddle loom, but just bought my first 4 shaft/4 treadle loom (a Dorset from 1981). This is so different from direct warping! Joel, I actually bought a sectional warp beam for my Schacht Baby Wolf...my other 2 looms are sectional warp Union 36 floor looms and that is what I learned on so I figured I'd stay with what I knew....now to figure out designs in my spare time on the extra treadles and headles...
Joel, it is actually called 4 harnesses(or shafts) and 6 treadles. Heddles are the wires that the threads go through to attach them to a shaft or harness. The reason there are 6 treadles and not just one treadle per harness is so that you can make every balanced (same number of harnesses up and down) tie-up possible on your loom at one time. Two of the treadles can be tied for plain weave and I always put them on the outside two treadles, so that takes care of the 1 + 3 tie-up and the 2 + 4 tie-up. Then I tie the other four treadles to 1 + 2, 2 + 3, 3 + 4, and 4 + 1. Most weaving drafts come with a tie-up and a treadling sequence. Traditionally, you tie empty boxes in the tie-up to a rising shed, so whichever harnesses/shafts are empty in the tie-up, tie to the first treadle, and so on. I hope that helps clarify.

I saw this video a year ago and didn't understand half of it. All those strings and rods and huh I don't even have a low warp- or clothbeam on my simple jack loom?! Yikes! It didn't get in my way to dress my second hand loom though, always a tangled mess but...it got dressed, in the end. I'm kind of proud of it in a way, I just tried something and it got me to weave scarfs and it made me really happy. Now I'm on the look out for a better loom, 8 instead of 4 shafts, countermarch instead of a jack loom. And I decided to look up some tips for warping, to learn it the (a) right way, with less mess and stress. I found this one again, watched it AND I GET IT. Tiihii. It sounds silly, may be, but for me it's a sign I did learn, I thought myself some stuff, otherwise I wouldn't understand it now :) I can't wait to get my 'new' loom and warp it this way entirely, not just some parts of it. It must be heaven haha.

i have just found this channel on my for you page of my youtube and i have found this to be a wonderful non complex tutorial .. very clear and understandable, is this only for a floor standing loom or can it be applied to one of the table top ridgid heddle looms too... I've asked my husband for one as i want a new hobby and weaving seems to have hit my taste buds just of late, and i am looking for an uncomplicated tutorial on how to weave as im more of a "monkey see, monkey do" do'er than a reader do'er
Trying to setup a Leclerc Fanny loom. It is an older model and trying to get the treadles setup properly and have the frames move properly as I treadle. It does not seem like it is working properly. I have everything hanging properly and the frames set one frame to one treadle. Not sure if I need to have more than one frame per treadle. Is there a video on how to set up the treadles for a 4 frame counterbalance. I believe the loom is like a 26" wide loom.

What an awesome video. I have never seen a video like this. I didn't know you'd remove the rattle at this point. I thought it was like a sectional beam that would stay on for the whole time the warp was on the loom. Interesting.
I do one complete turn of the warp beam crank with minimal tension. Then I go around to the front of the warp and "thumb down" the warp, adding tension in small sections.
I would really like an answer to this question. If you use a raddle cross instead of a counting thread, how would you get the warp onto the raddle? I have yet to figure this out.
Common warping errors.1. Skipping dents in the reed. 2. Misthreading heddles, ie draft says; 1234 and you thread 1224 and miss heddle 3. 3. Forgetting to use color coding when tieing the cross so that, up is down and down is up and you get a twist in the warp. 4. Not paying close attention to your threading cross. It must be pristine! 6. Miscounting how many warp threads you are supposed to have. 7. Not counting out your heddles or missing a few. 8. Crossing warp threads when bringing them thru the heddles (see number 2) 9. Going too fast when warping. Take your time and GO SLOW.
Im new to floor loom weaving, I've been using a rigid loom. May I ask why you put one and then two threads in reed? I would think you just put one in each reed? Thanks, shannon
I'm only a beginner, but from what I've read, that depends on the total ends per inch that you want the final piece to be. If your reed is eight dents per inch but your final piece is 12 ends per inch, for example, you need to double up here and there. So you don't *always* have to double up, like if your reed is 10 dpi and your piece is also 10 epi, you wouldn't. But like if your reed is 15 dpi and your final piece is 30 epi, you would double throughout. In some cases you might even put three ends in each dent, if it were needed. Hope that makes sense.
The raddle is on the back beam. The warp goes over the raddle, and down to the warp beam where it is wound onto the beam. At no time is the raddle near the paper. The back beam and the warp beam are not the same. Take another look at the video and let us know if you're still confused.
+Elisabeta Pieleanu, the sett (ends per inch) is determined by the yarn and the weave structure. The yarns we sell at WEBS have a suggested sett range--the lower number (least dense) is for plain weave and the upper end is for twills. You can see the suggested sett range when looking at the details of a weaving yarn on our website.

Hannah, which shafts (harnesses) are threaded is determined by the draft you are using. In our video, Barbara is threading all 4 shafts, but it's not always easy to see all four because they are close together and the camera is focusing on her hands.
Thank you for this thorough explanation. I am slightly confused by the 1-2 sleighing pattern. She never explained why it isn’t one thread per reed slot. Could you clarify, please?
I believe the pattern she is using calls for that type of threading. I have yet to encounter a pattern that states that type of threading thru the reed, only single per slot.

Some people use paper when winding the warp, some use sticks. I use the slats out of a 2 inch mini blind I found on clearance at Lowe's :)

that is we call 2-1, 2-1 in the reed. i tried 2-1-1 the result is not good.
