    I was raised on chow chow, recipes from my grandmother and her ancestors all from the Southern United States. Our chow chow was chopped a bit finer with the addition of cabbage and bell peppers. In my immediate family we would serve it with our Pinto Beans with a side of corn bread.

    Hi Bonita & friends. I'm from South Eastern Manitoba & until last fall, I had never had the pleasure of tasting Green tomato Chow Chow. Jeez! I'm in my 50's !!! Where has this been all my life? My neighbour gave me a sample jar. This year I intentionally planted a few extra tomatoes to make a nice stash in my pantry. I like to make only small batches, due to a bad back ; so this amount in the video is perfect. Several batches over the next couple of weeks will be made. The first batch is almost finished simmering & is perfuming my kitchen. My tummy is growling in anticipation! Thank you for posting this video blog !

    My mother and my grandmother put the pickling spice right into the pot and never used a cheese cloth bag. I come from a long line of Nova Scotia ancestors that called it Green Tomato Chow. They thinly sliced the green tomatoes and the onions and they rinsed the salt the next day so your chow wouldn't be so salty. They also let it simmer on the back of the stove for nearly two hours. We had the Chow with turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

    Thanks so much for this! Chow Chow was one of my favourite things I discovered while living in Nova Scotia ten years ago. I had a question - why do you not use some of the water/juice removed from the tomatoes and onions instead of replacing it with plain water? I would think that would improve the flavour and nutritional value? Or is it too acidic that way?

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  5 лет назад +3

      Hi Patti: Thank you so much for your message and for noticing this. The reason you remove the water that come out of the veggies is because of the salt, now this is a part of the pickling process. You salt it first and remove some of the acidic juices and start the pickling, then remove that and the next step is the vinegar, pickling spices and sugar. This is a lovely recipe for green tomato chow chow and please let me know what you think after you make it. Enjoy and have a lovely evening. Bonita

      @@bonitaskitchen Ahhh....of course! I didn't think of the salt. Yah, that would be pretty salty if you used the tomato juices! Thanks for clearing that up and I sure will let you know if I make it. I posted a link to your recipe video on my facebook and a lot of people are commenting on it :-)

    Good morning Bonita I made this recipe this morning
    There was a lot of liquid leftover, so not quite what I expected
    Will it thicken?

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  3 года назад

      Hi Evelyn thank you for your message and for making our recipe. The liquid is not as thick as mustard pickles. It will thicken a little more as it sets in with the ingredients and it will soak up the liquid in the tomatoes and onions. Please we love the liquid to dip our bread or pour over the meal we are eating. I'm sure you will love them, enjoy. :) Bonita

    My grandmother used to put her tomatoes and onion through a clamp-on meat grinder. As time went on we preferred a little more texture. You can put this on the side of a plate of any meal!

    hi Bonita,
    In the written recipe it doesn’t say anything about. 1 1/2 cup of water as in the video. Love the recipe,making it as we speak. Smells amazing.!

      Thank you for pointing that out, I try to read over my recipes but most times I just get to write them and post. It was 2 1/2 cups of water, and I fixed the error in the recipe. I'm glad you enjoy this recipe they are so tasty. :) Bonita

      Thank you for your message and for stopping by. I'm not sure of your question? But when you let it rest overnight, just drain off the salty water from the green tomatoes and onions that was brining. Then add the veggies to your boiler again....then add the other ingredients. My recipe is posted under this video and please watch the video for more details. If you can't use as much salt or sugar to your recipe use what you can..... :) Thanks Bonita

      @bonitaskitchen  2 года назад +1

      Hi Dianne, Thank you so much for your message and for making our recipe. Sorry I'm just getting to your message. I would put it all back in the boiler and add more sugar, then start the boil it again and rewash the bottles and start all over again with filling them. I'm sure you got them all sealed and everything cleaned up. It's always best to taste the pickles in between cooking them to always make sure you are happy with the taste. But lucky for you it can be fixed but it will be extra work. I hope this helps and enjoy them to the fullest. :) Bonita
