Did you by chance get to meet Mike and Lou Busby, the owners of the Chicken Gold Post RV Park, Cafe and the Pedro dredge? Great couple. Mike is from Lincoln, NE. He first started gold mining in Alaska right after graduating college. He and Lou raised their family in Chicken while gold mining during the summer---then lived in Homer, AK during the school year. They opened the Chicken Outpost in about 2001. We were first there in 2002. A great place to spend a week or two.
@@robinconnell3882 I met a lot of people so it's possible I did. I had dinner in the cafe and several people were working. It was pretty busy though so not much opportunity to chit chat that night.
Evidently WD-40 is in short supply that far north! I remember some old shop keepers in the old days let the door squeak as a way for them to know someone was coming in. I just love how there is something to see, as well as history to hear about in any of our small towns and rural areas in our country. There is just too many places to visit, and not enough time.
Very cool. Hopefully at least the cafe has at least a water well and generator. Excellent photo opportunities. We have a salon that the ceiling is completely covered in deer antlers.
Well you made it to chicken looks good lots of mining history reminds me of wiseman but Chicken is a lot more touristy .When we went to Alaska looked at the distance to Chicken we chickened out 😂 but I bet they got some good chicken fried steak dinners up their any way love your trip way up North ⛏️🤔🙏
Years ago I read a book written by a teacher who went to Chicken, Alaska to teach. Very interesting and sometimes humorous. One story she tells of a young boy who went to the outhouse an didn't come back. Found out his bottom had frozen to the toilet seat. They had to pry up the seat and take him and seat inside to thaw him loose. I believe the name of the book was Tisha, which was what one child called her because they couldn't pronounce, teacher. Looks like there isn't a school there anymore. Always thought it must be an interesting town.
@@sandywetzel3383 When we were there in 2002 the old school building was still standing, as we're many of the buildings talked about in the book Tisha---a great read. Old Chicken, North of current day Chicjen, was privately owned in 2002 with guided tours available.
im 54th who watch this video .❤ well its a beautiful place . i love green lands .where air is so fresh . you are so lucky that u visited such a beautiful places .
The Alaskan equivalent of Terlingua, Tombstone, and Deadwood. Interesting how most of the activity in these towns is concentrated in the “watering holes”. Thanks for taking us along for the ride Coach!
Another very interesting location I’ve never heard of, very cool. John, in the newsletter you mentioned finding a new Florida audience. Have you considered doing a dying towns of the Mississippi delta video? Lots of ghost towns and almost ghost towns down there and you can do some blues history too. That would probably find lots of European fans too
Great Episode!!! I've got a couple dog musher buddies that have a "got laid in Chicken AK" T-shirt from probably 25 years ago. Thanks for showing the dog truck and trailer at the beginning. I'd go to Chicken just to hang out in the Saloon(lol). Thanks for sharing.
How fun to just be able to sit with the folks there playing their guitar and harmonica. I'm sure you enjoyed some lively conversation. My question, if they didn't have electricity in the room, what powered the heater?
It's so pretty up there - I love that they have flowers everywhere! The old mining equipment alone would be worth checking out Chicken - really interesting history there. The Saloon looks like Alaska's version of Bourbon Street! :)
I can't believe the size of that trommel by the post office. That must have been a major amount of material. There is a watering hole in Evergreen, Colorado. The rafters of which are festooned with women's brassieres. I love how this place got its name.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Which is more dangerous, a Pine Martin or a Cougar? ; ) (WA state, next to Mt. St. Helens; meaning the place of course...) Loving your Alaska series, many thanks!
"Chicken Poop" 🤣🤣 They should have a horse-sized chicken with a saddle on it in the square for silly pics. Man, they could have a Chicken Festival. Chicken Races, Chicken Poop Bingo, Chicken herding, Cooking contest, costume contest. Boiled egg eating...the possibilities are endless!
I've been running like a chicken catching June Bugs and just now got set down to watch this 🐔 😉 I too am loving the Alaska series, such a beautiful, brutal country, bless those that persevered to settle this country. I wondered if you'd done any goldpanning while there. I'm thinking water is not that easy to get with the permafrost, also freezing during the long, cold winters. Loved the drone shots. Good luck with school starting, stay safe and GOD bless
I looked at Chicken in street view on Google Earth. I could see a landing strip with what I think was a Beechcraft Baron twin engine aircraft sitting there with a cover over it, so a little of Kansas represented there. I wonder does every one leave town when when the road is closed for the winter or do a few hearty souls remain? They would need to have a lot of supplies stockpiled. Maybe the airplane for emergencies?
Boy this sure was a shorty, John. Guess the rest will be on Tuesday. I don't blame them on changing the name to Chicken. The moose was interesting and the dogs were adorable. That saloon was a little strange in it's decorations of men's hats and women's underwear? Really? Guess the men find that funny. Oh well. What will be will be. Happy trails to you and God bless.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I would think it would take a long time especially if it's time for college to begin. I did enjoy seeing Chicken the scenery was great again. I assume those were all clean underwear.... anyway. Alaska is really pretty, I mean amazingly so, and the time difference is very nice as well. But I still would not want to live up there, it's not personal (it's really not). Be good, be safe !!
Thanks for showing me a place I will never see myself. I hope you had a great trip.
Thanks for watching as always!

They've got the chain of scoops from the dredge. And the post office door would make great sound effects for a spooky video.

Interesting place to mooch for a day or two. Definitely a mining town especially with that saloon.

Chicken has it all.😊 what a place. Beautiful scenery. Exciting!

Hey Coach. I like the mine related info and equipment.Ride on.
Yes the history was very interesting to me as well!
And I thought North Dakota was tough oil patch duty.

Just watched this fun video. We got a kick from the way the town was named. A rather interesting place. Looking forward to your next video.

Hey Coach, did you see any chickens crossing the "road"...Another cool place...
Ha! Actually I think I did but didn’t even think to record it doh 🤦🏼♂️

I don’t know much about trommels but I included it because it did seem massive. Gotta love the small town quirks 😊
The sunrises and sunsets would mess me up so and my anxiety would go through the roof.
It’s definitely something to get used to. Although I’d probably prefer this to all day darkness they have in winter!
Where did they get that door to the post office, a haunted house?creeeeak
I know right 😂😂
Interesting series, my mind was preconditioned for chicken and the post office door sounded like a rooster 😂
Ha! That would’ve been a hoot! 😂
Went to Alaska on a cruise, train ride. The eeriness of little darkness was fun to experience, I see where Pacino had a hard time.

What is the price range for the rooms and meals? What type of budget would someone need to visit??
