Great video. I was born in '65. My Dad had the Meet the Beatles and The Beatles Second Album and I remember wearing those out (still have them). I remember thinking of the allure of the British imports, saved lawn cutting money and eventually, got a box set of the EMI/Apple releases and then the CDs (and seemingly all the other releases of those British releases). But you are right. I still think of Meet the Beatles. I can't imagine "I Want to Hold Your Hand" not being included on that LP. The LP and the energy behind it is perfect. Glad you're feeling better!
Me either. I became a fan in 1982 at 7 years old, and the Capitol versions were still being sold in the US. I got a CD player in 1987 with several Beatles CD's. I didn't understand why the CD's were different than the vinyl records, 8 tracks, and cassette tapes I had collected over the past 5 years.
I’m excited, I’m only 30 always had the British versions. I appreciate this for what it it’s, replicating the original us versions in mono. I can never find us mono pressings so I’m interested to just hear them
To have the original Capitol mixes is very appealing since it's what i grew up with. To top it off these are in mono. I'm not interested in the box, just the 6 titles sold separately. Great video and hope you are on your way to feeling better, Mazzy. All the best to you!
Feel better soon, Mazzy. I’d love to see the US Capitol version of Rubber Soul get released as part of a boxed set next year, along with the UK Mono as they did with the Revolver box.
Excellent coverage! Andrew @ Parlogram made a similar point. Meet The Beatles alone is an important part of their history as it opened them up the US audience. If these sound better than us ogs, then it is good for the used market too.
Hi. I have my cd Capitol albums box sets Tm with the inner trays that easily bend and silly design cos they give you those eight albums as is, just done the best they could, Volume One being a Christmas present in 2004. It is telling on the Hoffman Forum both of us know, there people who plainly have never heard the mono versions which as I was mentioning to Dad earlier probably had a lot to those of us who bought these from the late 60's to the mid 80's of course only got the stereo so didn't realize some of the echo and that wasn't on the mono's at all. These records are just an attempt to give people what many mainly Americans experienced, the way it was experienced that as much as the British albums were the Beatles own intent, were what made them such a massive lasting influence. And those track lists were a part of that. I'm glad they are coming out for those of us who either grew up with them or enjoy alternate selections and recognize their importance. Finally Mazzy, do look after yourself and your voice - it's needed apart from owt else!
your videos are always entertaining and informative. you also have an incredible vinyl collection. Im 68 and have been collecting since college .days. My main interest in collecting is Beatles,Dylan and Stones. One day I went on craigslist and saw an ad selling Japanese imports on vinyl. I ended up buying over 200 records at $5 a pop. Mostly Beatles. couldnt believe it. The guy was going through a divorce and was begging me to buy them. I went to his house 4 times and at the end he asked me if in a year could he buy them all back. I said no way but if you want them back now i will return them all. He said thanks but i need the money. kee p them. Before seeing the ad i did not have even 1 japanese import. Hope you recover from the flu soon and keep doing your great videos
🎉Hey Mazzy... Hope You Feel Better Brother!! Funny Got My First Record Christmas 64 As Well... For The Same Reason.. That Sound You Mention Was The 60's Sound!!!! It Was Part Of Our Psyche!!! It's Like Seeing The Capital Swirl Label ... Everything Just Floods Back!!!! A Space In Time!!!!
You’ve said all that needs to be said Mazzy. And by the way, those Jellyfish OG’s are quite expensive so some of us have to settle for the re-issues. Thanks for the memories.
Appreciate your astute commentary. These records are worth getting if you want American mono. It is too expensive to get the OG pressings that are in fine condition.Hopefully they will continue the project with Part 2. Be all well soon.
Thanks a lot for your thoughts on this. For me as a German Beatles collector and second generation fan it is a great opportunity to get all US albums in pristine condition;. So far these are missing in my collection. Amazon Germany had it for 188 EUR last weekend which is a great price. now it is back at 270 EUR. So, I am really looking forward to this. For a long long time, this is a beatles release, which is satisfying me. Get well soon Massi! BR from Munich
I usually don't buy any of the cash grab stuff they put out, but these were the albums I grew up on, so I ordered the box set. I'm actually pretty excited about it. I have the White Mono vinyl box set, and they sound great, but this upcoming set were the albums I was buying when I was a young teenager so I'm looking forward to it.
Norman you're right on about the memories the Beatles American LP'S conjurs up, also the track order on the albums. Think I'm just going for blue album for sentimental reasons.
My parents hated the Fabs, but they loved having an easy time when getting me presents. Just Beatles 45s and albums, my first Beatles VI, for my 9th birthday in 1965.
Give it five years and there will be brand new Beatles album. With original vocals and brand new backing tracks. The beatles orchestrated. The beatles dub reggae. The possibilities are endless....
First album I ever bought was at Gramophone - The Early Beatles! I was 8 in 1968 and my brother delivered the SF Chronicle in Daly City where we lived, and he let me keep the tips if I went and collected from his paper route customers. When I saved up $3.50 I had enough for the album. Great memories, thanks!
my dad was high school buddies of the chess family. in 64 my dad gave me a vj 45, and a swan 45, all from chess that was the beatles first two singles. after it blew up, capital made sure that EMI only let them release beatles. i wish i still had those disks. i can still see the black swan disk with she loves you on it. chess, in chicago, where rock really started.
George Martin's whole "we never included singles on an album, we thought it was cheating the fans" line is nonsense. There were 4 single tracks on Please Please Me, 4 single tracks on A Hard Day's Night, 2 single tracks on Help, 2 single tracks on Revolver. I have to wonder if it was him trying to make himself feel better about not insisting that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields go on Sgt. Pepper despite being a single.
Hi Mazzy hope your feeling better! Yes I hope they sound better. I have my original mono albums. But I am curious to get a couple individually! I am a second generation Beatles fan. Bought the Second album in 1976 at K Mart .hope you have a wonderful day Mazzy!!
The US Capital Beatles are nostalgic for me. I used to listen to my mom's records. I would like to get Hard Days Night because I don't have this in my collection. I hope you feel better soon 😊
The "Hard Days Night" songs were released as "Something New" on Capitol. They also appeared as a soundtrack on United Artists. "Something New" was my first record by The Beatles and I wanted it when they first appeared on CD around 1987. But It wasn't available because the records were only available in the British configurations.
Firstly, I wish you a full and speedy recovery. I always enjoy your videos. The Capitol releases, I can tell, mean everything to those who grew up with them in the US. That thing you talk about being able to hear the next track before it begins, I fully appreciate it. The thing about this release is that it is alien to me (I won't use the Royal we!). The release sort of annoyed me because I have a view of what I would like to see released that is slightly different to yours. That's fine I'm from the UK and you're from the US. We have a different history of the band from the point of view of when and how we experienced them and we cannot change that. It is an inbuilt thing that cannot be unlearned. So we can agree to differ on this release. I won't be going for this, but I fully understand why you will. I will still enjoy your reviews of what emerges as your enthusiasm is infectious and I can divorce the disappointment I have for the non-appearance of (let's say Rubber Soul for want of a better placeholder) an expected continuation of the last few year's output for this US themed set. In my mind, I'm mentally reallocating the cost of this set to a forthcoming, and long-awaited, huge box set of Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band recordings that are finally due for an appearance, so in a way we have a strange logic playing out! You can't really get more British than Viv and Co. so the fact that they benefit from my patronage is symbolic, I guess. Once again, glad to see a new video and hear that you are on the mend. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated.
I’m such a Beatle fan and completist that I’ll buy them all individually and hope they continue through Revolver inc MMT. My fear is they don’t continue like those CD boxes. The box without a book isn’t worth the extra 100.
SO TRUE, I WAS NEVER AWARE OF THE Parlophone label until one day a Friend told me about Larry Williams' "Bad Boy" on a new Beatle album! What a new Beatle album! It hit me like a ton of bricks! Life was good! The Beatles Story, was the first time I got to hear them live! Other then Ed's show!
The Beatles still contribute to the music business and set high standards. They are an industry unto themselves. Greatest vocals and an unmatched level of creativity ever. John and Paul’s vocals are the best. I know I am a candidate for being Captain Obvious but their songs hold up over the last half century
The stereo US LPs were available thru late 80’s, mono LPs were gone by 67’, so this is first reissue in mono since then 👍🏻, Wally purple issues do sound awesome but were all in Stereo
I got all the Beatles albums as they came out in the 60s. When the CDs of the British versions came out, they didn't sound right to me, because I was used to all the reverb and other things they did here at Capital. I remember in particular, the first time I heard the UK version of I Feel Fine, I thought it sounded empty -- I missed all that clanging symbols and reverb. Since I heard that song thousands of times in the 60s, I'm still partial to the US version, even though it wasn't the one the Beatles wanted.
I'm 68 now and started collecting when I was 11 back in 67. Dad was tight with the allowance and while I could petition for supplemental buys, the weekly dole was 25 cents to spend as I pleased. I was the oldest so no older sibling influences or records to listen to. Living in a new town to us, this suburb had garage sales and started hitting them to stretch the allowance. A 45 back then was 99 cents so a month to save for a new disc. I bought my first Beatles record Please, Please Me for a nickel. A week later at another garage sale, I found another PPM but with a label variation and I remember the moment-something clicked an AHA moment and my collecting started. I'm around 1300 records/CDs/45s/box sets in. Still buying but not as much. I also benefited from friends whose older sisters had moved out or married and was given their old discs.
I hope you feel better soon. I just got back from a week in London and a friend there had the Roro a few weeks ago - something's been going around there - so I'll probably be sniffling shortly too. Nothing a dose of livestock dewormer can't fix. 😉 As for these Beatles releases, I don't understand the box pricing, seems like $120 is a big jump just for an interview album and a box. Nice that' they're putting out the six albums individually. Keep stuff like that in print. Cheers, Tom
I like your commentary in general, and this one is really good. I'll have to watch even more of your videos. I noticed that the 1964-1974 10 years of Beatles card that you showed does not list the "Let It Be" album. When I first listened to albums like "The Beatles' Second Album," when I was 11, I thought that the reverb on the intro of songs like "Roll Over Beethoven" and "I Call Your Name" made them sound like they were playing them live in a large auditorium. Just to point out a detail: most of the Capitol albums had 11 songs each (2nd Album, Something New, Beatles '65, Beatles VI, Yesterday and Today, and Revolver). Only Meet the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night (UA LP), Help, and Rubber Soul had 12 tracks in the US.
My first import was in 1983-84, around there. It was Rubber Soul and I thought "good, my old one's beaten up, I could use a replacement". I found out it was the British release and was amazed at how many more songs were on it, and where's "I've Just Seen a Face" LIFE to ME: "It's on the record before, dude."
Hi Mazzy. Id like to suggest a deep dive video. You're an excellent teacher and historian in regard to the Beatles. I would love to see your production of a video that gets deep into the Beatles US Singles. First to last and all the details in between. US singles, in order. The labels, the picture sleeves, the timeline, the B-sides, why it came out this way here compared to UK, etc. EVERYTHING! Thank you for considering.
Yes, Kevin Reeves was the Master Engineer on the recent Jellyfish releases. It gives me great pause. If I buy the six Capitol records, an excellent return policy will be a must.
I can remember buying the moni albums for just under $2.00, and my first stereo Beatles album was the Second Album which went for about $2.50. I bought many of them from Safeway, which is something you don't see these days. I would guess that the Cassette & CD eras put the kibosh to grocery stores selling music. Not knowing anything about the EMI records, I just thought that it was the norm to have the singles on the albums. Like you, Mazzy, I was sure glad they did that over here. I bought Beatles '65 bbefore we even had a stereo/record player, and convinced my mon to get one of those fold over jobs with trading stamps. Weird times in the gold mine for sure.
In the mid-60s, my elder brother drove a car which had a device that would add reverb to any radio station's playlist. I, being very, very young, thought this was an incredible thing. I would often beg my brother to take me along wherever he was driving to just so I could use this faux echo chamber gizmo. Ironically today, I prefer listening to music (except for Elvis Presley) that has as little reverb as possible.
Very interesting to see the Beatles 10 1964-1974 listing of Beatles albums. There's no Let It Be listing! I had forgotten that LiB was out of print for years.
hey mazzy..you can add me to your 'we' when it comes to 'the beatles story'..i used to play that constently (of course i love spoken word records)..the interviews were cool, and like you said, we didnt have the internet back then..great stuff..peace my friend.. rocky
I have that Bruce Spizer book at 10:56. The highlight for me is the "Watcher" scenario on how things might have turned out if Capitol had released She Loves You. If that scenario is anything to go by, then it may have been a silver lining that Capitol didn't release it.
That price for the full box is obscene. You're supposed to pay LESS with higher volume. But then I'm still fuming over the price of the "Now and Then" vinyl single. I've watched a couple of videos about the box and it seems like everyone is up in arms about what this is NOT: a Rubber Soul deluxe set. Everyone seems to have convinced themselves that a Rubber Soul box was imminent, even though it was never announced. Cheers, Mazzy, hope you feel better.
This boxset release is an essential addition to any Beatles collection as it showcases how they were being presented to the American music listening public. I'm sure they'll sound just fine in mono unlike the 2014 cd boxset which you have pointed out. In Australia 🇦🇺 With the Beatles and Beatles for sale had unique album covers for the Australian market. The photographic artwork for With the Beatles infuriated John Lennon so much that he demanded it was not to be sold like that when he saw it on The Beatles June 1964 Australian tour.
Great Video Mazzy hope you feel better , get this one up here in Canada the box set is $599.00 CAD each record is around $59.00 CAD on the web . You get a Better price.
My copy of Meet the Beatles got warped getting it home. On my bike, in the winter cold, with the record inside my coat. Did not want my dad to know I bought it. Needed to save for college. Now I can buy whatever I want. AND thanks dad, I did go to college.
Never listened to the US albums much (MMT is great, though) but I'll probably get A Hard Day's Night (mostly because of instrumentals) and because they didn't mess with the track listing.
In the UK each individual album is £32 and the box is £230. Sounds like a better deal than in the States until you do the conversion. £32 is about $42 and £230 is about $300. So the box set is the same price as in the US but the individual albums are way more expensive on this side of the pond.
@apollomemories7399 Agreed! It's horrible music for sure. But at least somebody at Capitol put forth some effort to make it listenable. Sure, things got better after Dr. Simon T. Riefer formulated marijuana for the first time in his lab in April of 1967, but up until then it was completely horrible. You can't blame Capitol for trying, though.
@@tardisrider613 What do you mean by the Dr. Riefer stuff? I used to pick heads from plants growing in the wild in Sumatra. No formulation required and unfknbelievable.
I don't want anyone to say "we" about the Beatles Second Album, Personally, I think it's a claptrap, especially the stereo version. I do prefer Meet the Beatles to With the Beatles, but my go to for that album is the mono in the US box. I'm not a vinyl person. I'm not going to begrudge anyone that is celebrating this release. In fact, it's kind of nice taking a year off from Beatle releases.
Was it shocking the first time seeing the track listing on a UK album? I know I was in 1979 when I bought the UK Revolver in a Tower records store in a bin called "British Imports" I had no clue Capitol was chopping up albums even then. I was in Honolulu. Younger sailors, who lived on the ship didn't really buy vinyl records unless to ship it home right away. I thought it was something really special. Anyways, I'll buy a few of them, but not the box.
I'll be buying the 6 albums individually, I can't justify paying $120 for the Beatles story and a box. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they don't screw up the sound on them.
You mention the Beatle singles not being on the albums. I think they made the BIG mistake by not putting Hey Jude on the White Album. I would relegate Revolution #9 to the B-side of a single and move Hey Jude into that slot. IMO that would take the White Album up a few notches. And... I would put the single for Revolution in there too. It's a great pairing with Back in the USSR. Just those two titles added to the White Album and two taken off would improve what is already a great album. Must make a playlist...
Reverb was extremely prevalent on US recordings in the 1960's. Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" album is drenched in reverb. Some of the reissues have non-reverb versions of some of the original album's songs and they sound totally flat.
Get well my friend. Drink plenty of liquids. I was always enamored by the “stereo” sound of Beatles records. Especially after a friend talked me out of the mono LP’s. 😩Enjoyed the video. Well done.
I am 1,000% with the people who first heard Beatles on capital and then when they heard the Parlophone versions were very put off. Take that Brit purists!
"I grew up with it" is not a valid reason for me to spend 300 bucks on an overpriced product, but reading these comments it appears that lots of people think differently. You can still pick up any of these albums easily in great shape for cheap. I'm 25 and I own nearly all of them, which is proof itself: I am not wealthy and i purchased most of these as a teen in San Francisco around 2014-2016. Come on folks, if "I grew up with it" is the best reason you have to drop 300 bucks, you might want to reconsider the purchase!
Rock and roll music should sound “hot”, the louder, the better, the more echo, the better, IMO. That being said, there might be a bit too much reverb on some of the tracks on the Capitol LPs, ( ‘I Feel Fine’ and ‘She’s A Woman’ are the worst, even on the mono Beatles ‘65), but the U.K. albums always sounded a little weak to me. There definitely needed to be a middle ground between the two. And I agree with you that the mid 2000s Capitol Albums CD releases were packaged HORRIBLY!😂
After they reissue all the Beatle Records is it gonna be another Elvis thing just cash grabs after that or do you think they can come up with anything exciting anymore?? Plus New Capital Reissues and Electing a New President in the same year is way too much on My Heart.
Oh dear you’ve got English man flu from London - that will teach you to hang around with dodgy brits ! Get well soon - I’m quite happy to pick up 1 or 2 of these capital monos - got the 2 cd box sets and the big one but nowt USA Beatles on vinyl

Beatles 65 was my favorite as a 7 year old. My 12 year old sister bought this and we had so much fun listening to it
I agree I'm the same age and loved getting new Beatle albums and singles growing up. Made my childhood so special.
Being brought up on these I'm thrilled to have this box!
I never even heard the British versions until 1987.
That is fkn crazy holy
You can't have looked for them any further than the end of your nose.
Me either. I became a fan in 1982 at 7 years old, and the Capitol versions were still being sold in the US. I got a CD player in 1987 with several Beatles CD's.
Right on, you mentioned purple labels, I have a few of those albums from the 80’s.
My first import was in 1983-84, around there. It was Rubber Soul and I thought "good, my old one's beaten up, I could use a replacement". I found out it was the British release and was amazed at how many more songs were on it, and where's "I've Just Seen a Face"
LIFE to ME: "It's on the record before, dude."
The Beatles Story is in High Fidelity. You can hear it clearly without power. Spinning it with your finger.
The box will not sell out and be discounted months later as the latest box sets have.
The red blue box version sold out and wasn’t discounted.
@@Slotnikoff It just goes to show---kids have always been stupid.
Very interesting to see the Beatles 10 1964-1974 listing of Beatles albums. There's no Let It Be listing! I had forgotten that LiB was out of print for years.
Great info. & post Mazzy
I first found the uk versions in 1976 at Sears of all places. Even on the terrible system I had at the time, I could clearly hear the difference.
hey mazzy..you can add me to your 'we' when it comes to 'the beatles story'..i used to play that constently (of course i love spoken word records)..the interviews were cool, and like you said, we didnt have the internet back then..great stuff..peace my friend..
rocky
"Fucked The Ball". Great phrase!! Get well, Mazzy. ☮🤟
Hope you are feeling better Mazzy
My sister had the same thing, it’s awful
I have that Bruce Spizer book at 10:56. The highlight for me is the "Watcher" scenario on how things might have turned out if Capitol had released She Loves You. If that scenario is anything to go by, then it may have been a silver lining that Capitol didn't release it.
7:42 - Ironic now that Capitol has OWNED United Artists for about 40 years, I want to say.
Individual records now 51-52 CAD right now
Hi, Mazzy. Unfortunatelly the guy in charge of mastering this collection is the same who cut the lacquers for both Jellyfish albums...
My copy of Meet the Beatles got warped getting it home. On my bike, in the winter cold, with the record inside my coat. Did not want my dad to know I bought it. Needed to save for college. Now I can buy whatever I want. AND thanks dad, I did go to college.
I've been sick also, covid,.Catching up on videos!
People can criticize Capitol all they want, but at least they tried to do SOMETHING to improve those releases.
No they didn't. All they did was mess around with 2nd-class copy tapes. No matter what they did it would never be any good.
Oddly enough, 'There's a Place' & 'Misery' weren't included on "The Early Beatles".
Hi Norman, get very well, Beatles can wait…
I heard that cutter’s didn’t allow the grooves to be too tight in the U.S. With only 12 tracks, the bass could be a little louder.
Where is UK Giles SuperDeluxe remixed A HardDaysNight ? Where is Uk Giles Super Deluxe BEATLES FOR SALE??
AM radio also would speed up songs up to 5%.
I’m not sure what reverb is.
Hope you're feelin better Mazzy. Hot tea and honey..
Well done.
"Cut by Keven Reeves? No thanks" Seems to be a popular opinion.
Somebody said he didn't get a fair shake and tried to warn the record company about those Jellyfish cuts, but that's heresay
Mazzy is still a little angry 😮 Get healthy ❤
