Private equity was also responsible for the utter destruction of local radio stations in the early 2000s. I was personally a witness to this process, as my mom (an award-winning morning radio personality and news reporter) went from making a good living to making so little she had to have two other jobs to being laid off. Private equity bought up tons of independent local stations that were super successful, then did the leveraged buyout thing and fired TONS of amazing local talent. Then they basically just hired a bunch of people just out of college for much lower salaries who could just play a bunch of nationally syndicated shows and music. No more local news, sports, music, or hosts who were connected to the actual community. It was such a crime.
Hey Mackenzie! I thought it was the big conglomerates that took over local radio stations after the Telecommunications Deregulation act passed in the mid-90s. I had approved abroad at that time so I am a little hazy on the sequence of events but curious to know where private equity fits in here- unless they were given the same green signal that conglomerates were.
Sorry for what happened to your mom, I hope she’s doing okay and honestly I’m very glad I know this now, I didn’t have a clue this was happening, definitely going to get my towns news paper all the time from now on.
An American private equity firm was also responible for killing one of the oldest chains of fashion department stores in The Netherlands. They bought the company during the financial crisis, then split the real estate and the stores housed in them into 2 separate companies. Next they raised the rent for the real estate up the point that the stores were bled dry and had to file for bankruptcy... leaving the private equity with a shit ton of money that went back to the USA and prime real estate in all major cities, and thousands of people unemployed here.

Absolutely. Classify local newspaper companies as essential services. Eliminate private equity ownership. Restrict the number of local newspaper companies that can be owned by a single entity. Ensuring we have Trusted news sources to rely on is doable.
@MackleMoreDiplo Rummy As a current student journalist In San Jose, CA who has also worked in other student publications (which are basically local papers to the school community) as well as a nonprofit local paper in Palo Alto who literally has THREE people covering a city made up of about 63,000 people, I just wanna say you're dead wrong. You'd be surprised how fucking resilient these journalists are, how hardworking they are. But most importantly, we strive for accuracy. It gets hard, having to juggle multiple stories a day, sleep in the newsroom, survive off of cold pizza (that is if youre not already too busy to even eat) but the thing that keeps us going is knowing how important our work is to the community. When violence broke out May 29 between protesters and city police, CNN or the Post werent there in the front line taking rubber bullets, breathing in tear gas and getting detained, it was me and other local papers.
I agree with Hasan on everything here. However, prompted by some of the comments I see under this video, I want to remark that there is one more aspect to the bigger picture. We all need to learn how to evaluate information more objectively, how to exert a healthy dose of skepticism towards everything we learn or discover, how to self-analyze and understand our own subjective biases -- doing our best to remove this primitive heuristic lens, filter that we use to perceive the world. Think back to high school: were we not taught how to differentiate statement of fact from an opinion? What happened to "consider the source"? What are the stakes for the person delivering the message, what is their motive? Society is built on trust, so it is wrong to mistrust every source (especially wrong to mistrust the source if we don't like the message), and yes, we live in a golden-age of conspiracy theories... Just read some of the comments... But we should take the time and care to verify the information that affects our daily life. That is OUR responsibility, as much as it is the journalists' responsibility to deliver good information to us.
Honestly, I wouldn’t really call all conspiracy theorists bad in of itself. I’m not talking about bullshit like flat earthers or climate change deniers. I know most conspiracy theories are wrong, but please hear them out at least because a few ones who are really true can have a major effect on society. Conspiracy theory simply means a secret plan by the government or some powerful organization that is deeply corrupting the common people. I mean, think about it. Should we really trust everything the powerful say? I mean, back when Chinese officials suppressed the evidence of coronavirus, the idea of a widespread pandemic coming was seen as overly paranoid at best. It was seen as a conspiracy theory then. If people just looked at the evidence and at least heard it out, less people would have died today. It feels like people just use “conspiracy theory,” as a synonym for “a false theory,” when it’s far from that. The thing about critical thinking is that we can’t just latch on to certain groups as the ones with critical thinking, and have all the power on knowledge, because as a scientist - usually it’s the well funded studies that gets spread out more. Completely unfair to scientists in poverty who can get a break through. I’m not saying famous organizations are all wrong, but I just don’t want people to value the opinions of such organizations just because they’re famous. I want you to value them because you know you took the time to check both sides of the story, no matter how ridiculous it sounds, and decided what has more evidence. I suggest studying the types of cognitive biases and logical fallacies please if you would like more practical advice on thinking critically. Often people just comment for others to think critically, without actually telling people how. It’s been getting a little repetitive to me honestly.

"... treat them like the essential services they are." ... I think it's kind of ironic that all the examples he gives are services that Americans either don't like to pay for or have paid for, or are tradionally badly funded in the first place ... And the way I see it, it's a problem that tends to arise, when public services are more and more required to turn a profit instead of providing value via them providing their services. That said, great video with a lot of insights, wasn't aware how dire this particular situation is over there :/
Beginning at the age of 13 (1963) newspaper stories influenced my life. My hypothesis of predatory leadership was inspired by a news story about Slobodan Milosevic while he was on trial for crimes against humanity. A nation without a robust free press is ripe for fascism.
When I was in graduate school one of my professors specialized in the evolution of tv news. We brought up this subject and he had the best explanation I ever heard. TV news divisions, back in the time of Walter Cronkite, were not expected to turn a profit. They were viewed as a public service and a national responsibility of the networks. As such, the way they tried to generate ratings through quality and credibility. That changed in the late 70’s as NBC, if I remember right, became the first to demand news divisions turn a profit and the others soon followed. Then came networks like CNN were the news was all their was to turn a profit. This marked the change to when news started to focus more on sensationalism than “real” news to get ratings. They actually did a good job of showing this change in humorous form in Anchorman 2
Don't forget that the consolidation of media which became legal from the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1997 allowed corporations to basically own all the media. So if our sources for news are beholden to corporate owners and their interests, does that then conflict with actually informing the public? In a sense then, doesn't news kind of turn into a form of propaganda? In my opinion, it is no accident that just about all sources of mainstream news are owned by a handful for corporations. Mission accomplished.
That’s all correct. And the reason for this was because we, the people, own the airwaves. We still own the airwaves but they've been stolen right from under our nose with no protest. We need to take them back. I wish I knew how to that.
Watch the movies "Network" and "Wag the Dog" . We saw this coming years ago, and could not stop it. They're doing the same thing to the post office and the food chain. We are in huge trouble, and the corona virus has been a gift, because people are beginning to see it. Clearly. We need to stay on point now, more than ever. People have got to wake up and march, fight, and get rid of the government that sold itself out to corporations. Stop Wall Street! Occupy was only the most recent uprising that was squashed, but people started waking up. Consider Covid a gift, and an opportunity.
defunding police is it smart? its not a rhetorical question....the assholes whom are responsible for causing confusion and violence is quite simple. 00:11 I remember in high school that every week I was to watch a news report or read a news article and write a paper on it. At the time we were learning writing skills and all of my teachers told me that the news is about being informative. News pieces should not have opinions in the articles, but any time the word should is used we can safely assume that the correct course of action is not being taken at that time. Years later in University my friends were telling me about news literacy and how to analyze the news. I told them that I do not need an update on how to analyze the news. THE NEWS STATES FACTS AND WE READ AND LEARN THE FACTS. Anything that is not a fact does not belong in the News. Opinions, baseless predictions, and fluff feel good information are to be ignored. There are other outlets for such things. I guess my high school teachers were not aware of the news ultimate goal of making money and deciding that opinions draw more attention than facts. In today's society the news can be stated in 3-5 minutes, but most of the information received is an opinion. News no longer informs, it just sways opinions. I discussed the rise of opinions, but not the downfall of factual information. I did it in this order because that is the evolution chain of the news. It started as factual information being important followed by opinions and spectacles making leading stories and finally the manipulation of stories in order to gain viewers resulting in a diversion from facts. If the news is not to inform but to sway opinion we will see multiple stations all taking their own opinions from each fact. I.E. Fox, CNN, and many more stations.

This is mind blowing. Thank you a million times over for exposing this. You expose things that are so hidden we didn't even existed much less know how much it was affecting our lives. Fantastic work. Thank you.
The sad thing is: it isn't hidden at all. Even across the world it's known that US-newspapers are getting thinned out, and it's happening in Europe as well. In my part of the country, we have ONE big News-agency that only has 'local parts' for each region, so we basically get the same stories and the exact same words except for that one page of local news and the deaths and births. It's happening all over the world, because everything is supposed to turn a profit, from a hospital to the railways and eventually newspapers. Sometimes, people realize that some things can't be profitable AND work as they're supposed to, but mostly that's a bit too late and a lot of damage is done. There IS good, investigative journalism still out there. It's mostly covered by big newspapers - though as we just saw, tehre's also local newspapers that sometimes has the right track and knows where to dig. But we need to VALUE such things, instead trolls and conspiracy-nuts and right-wing-loudmouths try to undermine the integrity of free journalism and free press. The US president is the biggest so far, and look what happened in the protests, with police openly attacking press! It's NOT a coincidence, it's a tactic. Trump might not be the one behind it, but someone is making that happen on purpose, invalidating press by calling them 'enemy of the state' and it only will lead to a people that is unwiling to listen to truth out of fear they will be lied to. It's a scary tactic, and you just need to look at every authoritarian country. The first thing to go is free, independent press.
This is Hassan's magnum opus. Hats off to bringing into spotlight the actual grassroots of the great disinformation problem.

When he started talking about local news, I thought he was advocating random local CCTV footage as the only reliable new source in the nation. And I was fully prepared to go with it.
Chris and Liz Sizemore I know what you’re thinking, but in Germany we have a so called GEZ. It’s funding local news as well as major TV broadcast. Here is my point, there are bound to laws that force them to only bring up facts, sourced and you as the listener are the one creating an opinion. They control the government more than otherwise and they create reliable sources and investigative journalism. They are bound to a press codex, so there is a proper tone. If made properly there are huge benefits in publicly funded media, if made poorly you can create a horrible corrupt propaganda machine. Educate yourself about the topic, because it’s working in Switzerland, the Netherlands, and people trust the media, which creates a more powerful yet peaceful discussion instead of Trump style shitting on each other.

It's another plandemic. The people who have taken over the government and American business don't want real news around. That's how "fake" news became a thing. One real good defense to this is for journalists and regular citizens are to break news on social media even if it means it's their second job or a hobby.
When you say nationally syndicated shows and music makes me wonder if big labels like sony or viacom time warner have interests in such equities?
Hey Mackenzie! I thought it was the big conglomerates that took over local radio stations after the Telecommunications Deregulation act passed in the mid-90s. I had approved abroad at that time so I am a little hazy on the sequence of events but curious to know where private equity fits in here- unless they were given the same green signal that conglomerates were.
Sorry for what happened to your mom, I hope she’s doing okay and honestly I’m very glad I know this now, I didn’t have a clue this was happening, definitely going to get my towns news paper all the time from now on.
The radio is pretty much dead in small towns, there may be 1-2 stations but most of the stuff is things you already heard or expect.
It’s actualy kinda scary because Hasan is one of my go-to’s for the news instead of the actual thing i.e. newspapers.
@Orbite flowno, he's not. I have nothing to do with American news and I can say only about the Indian news and issues he conveyed to the American audience. City of Bell, CA -- I remember reading about this. Corruption like this is why we need good journalism.
Absolutely. Classify local newspaper companies as essential services. Eliminate private equity ownership. Restrict the number of local newspaper companies that can be owned by a single entity. Ensuring we have Trusted news sources to rely on is doable.
MackleMoreDiplo Rummy local papers are more reputable than mainstream ones.
"It's not news. It's gossip." Good stuff.
I have a feeling you read a book called thinking fast and thinking slow
@@nickjeffreys42 Daniel Kanehman's? You're absolutely right! Great book!
Absolutely true, your view is in line with the Islamic tradition; it is always encouraged to fact check information.

I think it's kind of ironic that all the examples he gives are services that Americans either don't like to pay for or have paid for, or are tradionally badly funded in the first place ...
Spot on all, great thread.

Bro the state of media in India is worse....It's sheer govt manufactured propaganda and a couples of swines barking in the name of Debates and obviously it's topped by our own Tucker version "Arnab Goswami" killing Journalism everyday .
Most of the news networks are owned by industrialists close to the govt and Govt MPs.
The comedians are source of news and news channels have become comedy channels . The communal hate and brainwashing is just horrible. And a couple of journalists who are honest are harassed, thrown out of their jobs due to govt pressure and even arrested at times. The fourth pillar has collapsed and how.
Here literally every second channel is FOX NEWS💩

A good way to judge it is:
How much do you know about :
1. Land Acquisitions for industrial projects since 2014
2. Jay Shah story of assets
3. FCRA bill legalising foreign funding to political parties in 2018
4. Electoral bond only decipherable by governments
5. Imapct of 2G license re-auction in 2015
6. Impact and flaws in demonetisation, GST
7. Economic slowdown since late 2018
8. NPA increase even further since 2014
9. Rafale Deal U turns, (judgement occurring through sealed cover)
10. Unemployment at 45 yr high
11. RTI act dilution
12. UAPA act made even more draconian in 2018
13. Kashmir situation, (legal aspect of treaty of accession)
14. Supreme Court releases 2002 riot convicts
15. Selling national and state level PSUs regardless of balance sheets
16. Reduction of IAS, IES seats
17. SSC scam
18. Sand Mafia in MP
How much do you know about these issues from your newspapers and mainstream "Non Ndtv" channels?

Hasan, when you asked where we would get get nutrient-dense, reliable news, I was like: I'm watching em right now.
Seriously though, how sad is it when commedy shows, daily shows and all that give more reliable news than the actual news??
I wouldn't say comedy shows, late night talk shows and daily shows give reliable news. Their news is more regular and and on a wider scale. There really is nothing more reliable than local news
In the 80's we called them "Vulture Capitalists." Still vultures.
Hasan: where can we get nutrient dense reliable information?
Me: Patriot act with hasan minaj

"The Golden Age of Nonsense". Perfect.
Waiting for Hasan to start his own paper called “The Patriot Paper Please Buy Me As I Write Articles From My Drone Bassment”
Bassment?
In Germany we have news stations that are funded by taxes through the government. They have a special set of laws that protect them from being influenced by politics and these laws state that they have to tell and write the truth.
We have the same kind of station, but it had a bad quality, until new director came and rebrand the whole building so they can actually produce some good shows worth watching. But then, he get kicked out from the tv without any good explanation from the commissary board. Some said, this national tv become so good it starts to disrupt the private tv, so they kicked him out to clear the competition
same here in the netherlands! most people here get their news from the national news channel ‘nos’ (which is funded by taxes and has special laws so it stays as unbiased as possible) american news has always irritated me lmao
Sounds like a good idea.
this is super cool

When I first saw this show I thought that it would just be a version of Last Week Tonight that covered less progressive viewpoints; but I've been very pleasantly surprised by the tone, politics, and topics covered.
Patriot Act is one of my favorite shows right now!
I know it will sound stupid but... In spite the whole amazing video.., WHERE IS INTRO SONG.......!! It is so good... it literally gives me chills....
Watch it on netflix then u’ll get the song

Sounds like you've read Andrew Yang's policy page. He's been calling for government funding of local news for a long time.
I was thinking about that. But that seems scary, the government having control over all local news companies.
@@chrisandlizsizemore8172 They already do
Chris and Liz Sizemore I know what you’re thinking, but in Germany we have a so called GEZ.
@@chrisandlizsizemore8172 it's way scarier to have multinational corporations having control of all local newspapers, they already control the national ones and we all see how shitty they are.

I have an alternative economic model for journalism, but can't get anyone to read about it. Even as part of a longer analysis of the failed economic models of journalism. I believe that means I can rest my case? Also say RIP to journalism.
Shannon Jacobs , tell me where I can read it
It's another plandemic. The people who have taken over the government and American business don't want real news around. That's how "fake" news became a thing. One real good defense to this is for journalists and regular citizens are to break news on social media even if it means it's their second job or a hobby. What the TikTok community and K- Pop fans did to Trump's Tulsa rally showed the power social media gives to the people.
yeah, where can we read about it?
