My two cents from thousands of miles away is that two old T-34 engines is not going to be enough to make one working engine. Three maybe four might do the trick. No matter how many it takes, I look forward to the adventure.
Ha! What Americans can do and what Englishmen & women can do, especially in sheds, are two wildly different levels of skill. Remember, ~10 years ago, one couldn't buy a US-made 'sports car' that wasn't underpinned with bloody horsecart springs. 'Agricultural', that's the word I was looking for. It describes US engineering to a TEA. With the exception of (last 5 years) Milwaukee tools and Estwing th'hammers.
Ted's stardom is beginning to go to his head 🙂 Quote of the week: " I don't think this is going to be as straightforward as we thought". I have said that myself, once or twice.
About bloody time we got some tank stuff 😜 a morning coffee and watching you guys struggle with some soviet engineering is a great start to the day 👍😍😂😂
If Emile at Master Milo has taught us anything about these engines, it is that rusty cylinders are scrap cylinders :o) Also, that the valve timing is an absolute git to get right.
Even if the cylinder is re-bored, the pitting can remain and the metal compromised. Then it's replacement liners. This is true for all engines with water damage.
"I've got some guy called Vlad on the phone looking to buy T34 parts??" 1920s strip club music playing gently in the background, just another day at Mr Hewes.
I have had problems getting cylinder heads off before, but needing to use bottle jacks to get the cylinders off is on another level. Keep up the good work folks. So where are Ted's overalls?
I'm sure you know, but just in case: the heads are spambidextrous on that beauty. So if there's anything you can steal off the scrapper, head wise, you might be able to get by. Brilliant as ever. Glad you're not dead.
In Bosnia war, 8 of tanks in my uncles unit had these engines runing and being abused for 4 years under unbeliveable conditions, whithout a hickup. Just oil changes. Unreal reliability
You remind me of a Friend I lost years back. He had the same sort of mischievous look to him. Witty and motivated. Watching your vids is bittersweet sometimes.
Oh what a tease you are!! Considering the lack of knowledge about the engine you certainly gave it some stick and used your bottle(s) Jack looked in his element again. Excellent video lads, thanks.
In my misspent youth working on cars and motorcycles here in the US, when I worked on the car I regret giving up, a Jaguar E-series with a V-12, I thought Great Britain had a 'lock' on the number of bolts to get an engine down to the block assy....Looks like the Russians weren't satisfied with Olympic events, they HAD to have 'the most bolts' crown too!😁 👍🇺🇸😎
How cool is this. I know if I were there I could be useful and need no to very little supervision. And I have never seen a T-34 in my life. Thank you for a wonderful show.
Some things are never what they seem. Ted didn't expect to get covered in crap. Could this be the first, and last Russian tank you have in your workshop? 🤔 Hopefully, with plenty of cleaning, WD 49, & swearing you'll still be able to make one good engine out of two ... - poor ones. I await the next exciting episode! 😃🙃😃👍 🍰
ah the old bash the large lump of timber in the hole method, works a treat, had to do that once on a Land Rover rebuild, the old 2 1/4 lump just had all new parts, everything reground, went together fine, and the crank would not turn, so lobbed it in the woopy cart on the back of dads car, back to the engineering firm and watched the professional beat it into submission, after upscaling the large hammer selection four times, the crank span beautifully on its own like a precision swiss watch, amazing to watch something so tight spin so freely are you not going to chat Milo up in Holland for an engine, he has a couple i seem to remember, and has a couple of guys i think in Poland if need be
Swap the bottom end off t55 onto the t34. New liners, con rods and pistons and wallah engine that works. Strip the t34 engine see what the top end is like, it shouldn't be too bad as you've had it running.
Maybe use the top end from the old engine with the bottom end of this engine.🤔 BTW, old oil is acidic, so sitting a long time gets you the rust above the oil level and below the pistons
You have engine that worked, with bad bottom, so use the bottom from another engine and combine two of them into one working engine. It's not that hard. 😆
Hello Mr Hewes, The engine looks to be in rough shape. If you want to get some help or see what to look out for, you can check out Master Milo who has torn down the same engine which came from a T-55 but in much dire state. He went into pretty good detail about the engine restoration and I think it would help you too. Please don’t think of this comment as if I’m belittling you, I’m just trying to help you with your journey. Hope you can bring the engine back to life and help it run well. Have a nice day 👍
Yep, he (Mastermilo) was shoveling heaps of rust out of a similar engine, and Frankenstein'ed (his own words ;-) ) it to a running engine. From earlier videos of Joe and Mastermilo, I understand that they - at least - know each-others phone number ;-) and maybe some joint-venture project is cooking ;-)
I have high hopes that you could transplant the pistons and heads from #1 to the bottom end and piston rods from #2 .. which even if not ideal must be an improvement over #1 which remeber drove in despite its shagged bottom end. Ok some labour but the parts are all free at this point, seems to me worth the attempt, and in worst case you will get some great video content out if it.
Nice motor i like the way ther built dont no if id call it no expense spared but it looks good all aluminum light weight engine. Id like to see one of these or a rolls race built running off nice computer controlled timing map and find out what power its really capable of producing reliably. 👍
If 2 drunk Russian squaddies can make those engines run, you guys will do just fine with your mechanical experience. Hopefully you've got enough stuff to make 1 out of 2 and not have to buy many more parts. Thanks for the update.
do you know mastermilo on YT? His main project is restoring his Type 69-II tank. It belonged to Saddam Hussein and fought in the Golf War. After that it served as monument in England for over twenty years. Recently they restored the 38.8 litre V12 engine, with the main goal being to fully restore the tank. You can follow this progress on the daily vlog, Werkplaatsvlog (workshopvlog)
3:43 running and driving engine... over the side of a cliff. But then again, in ruzky land, that's top quality, maintained engine. That would fetch at least 3 pesos over the border.
Even I exhaled when you guys put that cyl head down 😂. You guys need a ceiling crane or something lol. You guys are prolly like 4get that, we got them on our trucks if we really need it 😆😆. Just stumbled across your channel today and I've watched a bunch of vids great stuff man.
Not an easy job to to dismantle the excellent 12 engine with all the rust packed around the cylinders literally blocking the heads but you can manage to do a very good job 👍 👏 👍👍
Thats gona "gona run" written all over it. There only looks like a couple of liners need replacing the rest look salvageable.it's surprising what a bit of oil and some emery cloth can do. Followed by a hone and some over size rings. (Cox and Turner should be able to help)
Немцы были в шоке,когда они взяли захваченный танк и начали изучать и охренели от того что двигатель на 500 сил алюминиевый,у них бл..ть самолётов не хватает а они двигателя для танков делают😮.
01:28 Jack proves that there is indeed, no crusty old hole that he won't finger...
I think Mr Hewes needs a bit of merch in a “Right! It's time for a cup of tea” tee-shirt.
Or cider 🤷
My two cents from thousands of miles away is that two old T-34 engines is not going to be enough to make one working engine. Three maybe four might do the trick. No matter how many it takes, I look forward to the adventure.
Betcha there's a running one this year. :)
I think they will get it running 👍
They'll do it, but it will smoke like MAD
Ha! What Americans can do and what Englishmen & women can do, especially in sheds, are two wildly different levels of skill. @@John-yf8qhWhile I agree that was true in the past, the current state is quite different. I work with both.
Ask an *average* American
Its nice that you got an engine thats mint and exactly as described. A sigh of relief all round
Ted's stardom is beginning to go to his head 🙂 Quote of the week: " I don't think this is going to be as straightforward as we thought". I have said that myself, once or twice.
So you had a broken engine now you have 2 broken engines, progress. On the plus side Jack did not mess too many things up
Might have a good block & crank though.
About bloody time we got some tank stuff 😜 a morning coffee and watching you guys struggle with some soviet engineering is a great start to the day 👍😍😂😂
If Emile at Master Milo has taught us anything about these engines, it is that rusty cylinders are scrap cylinders :o) Also, that the valve timing is an absolute git to get right.
and if all is perfect it still smokes.
😂 WISH YOU'D DO A "FAST SHOW" START.... "TODAY I ARE MOSTLY....."
Nice work, chaps. Teddie is the true star of the show, he steals it every time. Cheers.
Its Russian and looks in tip top condition. Bit of Potato Juice and it will be roaring to life.
A tank is meant to be fighting ready even if drowned in a swamp for some decades
Potato juice for Belorussian engines, here - vodka!
You have 12 other working pistons and two heads. Providing the crank is still attached brand new!
That engine has FIVE Jacks working on it! 🤯🤯😁😁😂😂
And, most importantly, one Ted.
I have had problems getting cylinder heads off before, but needing to use bottle jacks to get the cylinders off is on another level. Keep up the good work folks.
So where are Ted's overalls?
AH! You are right! The Shop Foreman needs proper clothing for sure.
I did that trick for a 40 year old dt466 inframe rebuild, worked like a charm. i had to replace the exhaust studs anyway
I'm sure you know, but just in case: the heads are spambidextrous on that beauty. So if there's anything you can steal off the scrapper, head wise, you might be able to get by. Brilliant as ever. Glad you're not dead.
I seem to recall the Dutchman at MasterMilo having quite a job getting the cam timing right on one of those engines. And he had a Russian manual.
Great to see some tank content, especially seeing what it’s going to take to get this one running again.
“One careful owner, only used at weekends. Runs and drives fine”…. NO Refunds!
Yup you will get that running. if the old engine ran then this one will be a breeze! Good works as always. Nice to see Ted as always supervising!
Watching your videos for a while now, this is the most interesting of the lot. A major WTF happened here combined with the most British humor.
I know nothing about mechanics; apart from 24 years in the army breaking vehicles, but I adore your films.
In Bosnia war, 8 of tanks in my uncles unit had these engines runing and being abused for 4 years under unbeliveable conditions, whithout a hickup. Just oil changes. Unreal reliability
Wow this takes me back major nostalgia hit. Big garage w/ friends working on pieces of shit we only half knew what we were doing.
Surely there must be a local T-34 specialist around the corner with spare rings and liners on the shelf?
You remind me of a Friend I lost years back. He had the same sort of mischievous look to him. Witty and motivated. Watching your vids is bittersweet sometimes.
Lots of hot engine oil down the cylinder linings Normally works a treat for seized pistons
Once again Ted is MVP.
Oh what a tease you are!! Considering the lack of knowledge about the engine you certainly gave it some stick and used your bottle(s) Jack looked in his element again. Excellent video lads, thanks.
And once again “Full Cowboy” prevails when removing the cylinder block where lesser men would have given up.
In my misspent youth working on cars and motorcycles here in the US, when I worked on the car I regret giving up, a Jaguar E-series with a V-12, I thought Great Britain had a 'lock' on the number of bolts to get an engine down to the block assy....Looks like the Russians weren't satisfied with Olympic events, they HAD to have 'the most bolts' crown too!😁
👍🇺🇸😎
Good thing you got two engines, that should probably yield enough working parts.
Love seeing you work on foreign models. Can't wait to see the rustbucket panther you rescue from a bog someday.
in holland, there is a man pissing himself, shaking his head...
Milo is a legend

I just love the fact that you happen to know someone who just happened to have a t-34 engine sitting around..... In a swamp apparently..... their farm
None of my friends have ancient Russian tank engines in their shed. I have no idea why not.
7:28 that's not rust, that's special, secret sauce. That's 1000 horses right there.
That looks to be in sub optimal condition. Best of luck getting it moving.
Ted and his crew working hard.....nice comment from Jack about squirting!
The 2nd bank of the engine wasnt better, it was just less worse.
I was expecting a push-rod engine. I didn't expect a dual over head cam 😮
It was meant to be used as a aviation engine. That's why it's made of mostly aluminium. And has relatively high litrage power
😅 Ted watching is like, stretch yawn and I'm walking away from you lunatics
ah the old bash the large lump of timber in the hole method, works a treat, had to do that once on a Land Rover rebuild, the old 2 1/4 lump just had all new parts, everything reground, went together fine, and the crank would not turn, so lobbed it in the woopy cart on the back of dads car, back to the engineering firm and watched the professional beat it into submission, after upscaling the large hammer selection four times, the crank span beautifully on its own like a precision swiss watch, amazing to watch something so tight spin so freely

Спасибо вам ребята что взялись за восстановление столь редкой техники особенно той техники на котором воевали мои деды
респект вам и удачи :)
Yes. It looks a wreck, but then the other engine WAS a wreck - but it still worked and moved the tank.
How do you know if a mechanic has a girlfriend? He has 2 clean fingers.
😂😂 OOH, MATRON!
thank you very much for good entertainment👍🤗👍🇸🇯
"Where there is a will there is a way"
Aided by 4 bottle jacks .... (And Ted supervising of course).
Джо, ты просто офигенный чувак! Самые лучшие пожелания тебе из России!
Another great video. I would say you got the best of your friend with that mint engine we had
2.37 - 2.52 Sounds like a song by The Streets... Genius!
Swap the bottom end off t55 onto the t34. New liners, con rods and pistons and wallah engine that works. Strip the t34 engine see what the top end is like, it shouldn't be too bad as you've had it running.

Hé ben ...Ya du boulot 😅 !😊....super projet les gars hâte de l'entendre ronfler 👌
A bit of emery paper to clean things up and should be able to make one out of the two.
There's a wherehouse in Lithuania with hundreds of these engines in it (tractor pulling owner said he bought one new in a crate there)
Maybe use the top end from the old engine with the bottom end of this engine.🤔
BTW, old oil is acidic, so sitting a long time gets you the rust above the oil level and below the pistons
I see where this is going, have fun cleaning up all the parts chaps
Playing in holes like you did is first Lesson for me and my Wife this night
You have engine that worked, with bad bottom, so use the bottom from another engine and combine two of them into one working engine. It's not that hard. 😆

That’s a relatively sophisticated design. Double overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder. Looks like an adaptation of some kind of aircraft engine.
It was initially designed as aircraft engine. And used as such in bombers like Yer-2.
@@ThorneyedWTthat is why the use of Al and maybe even Mg in those big castings to get it light.
It is just a wonder that the engine ran at all. What a wonderful wreck, but I know that if anyone could fix it you can. Talent will out...
Can't wait for the assembly, hope there are no surprises with the engine
Ted’s brilliant not sure about the rest of you. No joking great series .Looking for to next year’s exploits.
You could have tried boiling engine oil in an old chip pan and tipping it into the bores. Usually frees them up
I'm so happy this video was recommended to me.
Who wouldn't want a t-34 in their shed?

According to the service manual, you’re to use vodka to free up stuck cylinders. Only on t34 though
Clearly a mint engine , nothing to go wrong here 😉👌

Maybe ask Master Milo for some advise...... Or maybe an engine?

Good luck on the T-34!
Thanks. Try turning the volume up on your tv

Old Puke-in needs his Tank back. He's desperate and has a war to lose... sorry win.😂
Great work guys.
Looking forward to the next video
I wouldn’t mind buy one of those engine blocks and make it into a coffee table.
I watched a squirt tutorial the other day. That got me 😂
women have NO idea how much these lads enjoyed themselves.
Gotta be honest, that tutorial Jack took worked a treat!
My computer monitor is now covered in gunk...
Soviet K-700 tractors had the original 240 HP, many of these engines achieved 320 to 400 HP when changing the head and pump.
Great video gang
Landrover bottle Jack's come in handy that's for sure 🙁
Irc Merlin’s old school garage uses a swimming pool acid cleaner in the bores to eat away rust to aid freeing up 👍
Oi, lads, good job!
Nice to see a good old T34 bringing entertainment to some B'i'ish punks.
