Thanks! Good review! The Bulb setting can be used with the built in delay Timer. So you can be on a tripod, set the timer to release the mirror with a delay.
Thank you for this video I've had this camera a couple of years and was 2nd hand, it's my first full-frame dslr and still getting my head round using it, everything is a lot clearer after watching your videos. Many thanks!
Thank you! I also have been a rebel user up until now... This helped me be able to just pick up my Mark II and get right to shooting with minimal issues. I appreciate your time and help.
at 4:47 you say "when I move my f stop" but you use the shutter speed selection dial, the aperture or f stop adjustment is the big dial on the back, as you adjust your Tv (Time Value) the aperture changes to compensate for the time difference. You use the same dial for Av (aperture) when you should be using the dial on the back. The power switch has two on positions, the first on allows you to change shutter speed but doesn't allow you adjust the aperature. The second on (with the line that directs you to the big dial) allows you to change aperture as well. Bulb mode simply means the shutter/mirror stays open for the time you keep it open, if you choose to expose your photo for 19 seconds you keep the shutter open for 19 seconds.
Did anyone ever explain the Custom settings on the Mode dial? The C1, C2, C3 settings register virtually all the camera settings (including aperture, ISO, and shutter speed, and all custom functions) so that the photographer can instantly set a camera for three different purposes. For instance, my C1 is a "studio electronic flash" setup: Manual mode, shutter at 1/200, ISO at 100, aperture at f/11, flash light balance, et cetera. My C2 is "indoor available light:" Auto aperture, ISO 1600, tungsten balance. My C3 is the setup for video. Just switch between the C settings to change everything at once. Of course, you can then set anything further as you want, and anything you want to get back to the baseline, switch the mode to that C setting.
Okay, 3 years too late, but custom settings are brilliant. You set your camera up for a standard portrait shot and register that as C1. Then set up your camera (for example) for sports photography and set that as C2. So imagine you're photographing a football match on C2, then you see a spectator nearby, rather than re-arranging your settings from sports to portrait, you just turn the dial to C1 and you can take a portrait shot. You can adjust your custom settings while you're in each dial. For my kind of shooting they're brilliant; love them. Even photographing my dog; if he's still I can use my C1 portrait, and if he's moving I can click onto C2 (set up for sports) so it goes to auto servo focus, multiple shot, shutter speed priority in just a turn of the dial.
How in the world do you select and store the simple settings for A, iso and shutter for each custom on the dial... Great idea in concept but not user friendly at all.. Thdt custom setting menu is like another language
Thank you for this great video; I've only just bought this camera and like you it's my first full-frame. I did my first photography course on a borrowed Nikon and about to embark on part two of my course...all at sea with a new camera I could barely use...up till now! thanks you are a life saver well done.
I just purchased this camera as an upgrade from my crop sensor 60D to full frame. Thank you for the video it was great, I did have a question as to what in the world magic lantern is. I saw a lot of people talking about it, but I have no clue as to what it is
i dont know if you already have the answer since your comment is 1 year old :D but to answer your question: Magic Lantern (ML) is a hack to canon digital cameras, to unlock the hidden functions of the machine, for example RAW Video footage, HDR, etc.. tons of function which is in the camera, but canon wont let you to use it unless you buy a top model. For more information google this: magic lantern for 5d mark ii (or you can go to magiclantern dot fm) hope it was a help, but i think you already knew all this :)
on the bottom of the camera next to the tripod mount theres a cover on the lower right side. whats that for also above it it says open but I can't open mine. whats there. and one more question. how do you use the lil button on the front under the lens release button. do you press it then shoot I tried to use it but it does nothing for me. good video. can't wait for 2 and 3.
Hey, thanks for doing this video! Everytime I shoot, whether there's a lot of light or not a lot, the dark areas of my photos constantly show grain. I've tried changing the iso aperture/shutter & I still have this problem. Do you know what it could be, maybe a faulty camera? Thanks if you read this xx
a bit late now, but you need to expose to the Right (of the histogram). Push your highlights as far to the right when taking the image, without actually clipping them. Also, the 5D II is an older camera and the dynamic range (DR) isn't as good as modern mirrorless cameras from Canon. It is now 13 years old (12 when you asked your question) and sensor technology has improved a LOT since then. Expose to the Right, get your exposure spot on, in camera, without have to resort to bump exposure in post processing (DPP, Lightroom, C1 pro etc etc). You didn't mention what ISO you were shooting at either. Exposing to the Right is even more critical at higher ISOs. One final thing - noise, especially Chroma noise, will always be more apparent in the darker areas of the image, even with modern cameras.
Fantastic video ... I would like to know more about Magic Lantern... I have it on my computer but I am a little afraid to load it into my camera as I understand it can harm my camera... thanks
It's now June 2020 and just bought one 2nd hand, like brand new only 7k clicks... highly capable camera in the right hands, looking forward to using it for many years to come.
Custom settings allows you to set all your settings in that mode. For example I use the particular settings very often and I don't want to keep on adjusting the settings. I just save it in those custom settings mode. So when I need the same settings again I just turn the dial to custom settings. Hope this helps U ....
LOVED IT! Thanks. Just got my 5D Mark ii for Christmas and I LOVE it, but needed the basics, because I upgraded from a T3i. Lovin it! Thanks for your help. Can't wait to see your other videos. Keep shooting! Oh, fyi, I'm having trouble putting my lens hood on. Can you show me how to do that. For some reason it won't lock on. Thanks. And, how about using an external flash. I have one and I'm getting ready to learn more about it. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO!
Line up the two red Dots on the lens located at the 10 oclock position with the lense pointed away from your body lightly press the hood and turn counter clockwise till it locks in place.
There is a small mistake in the video where you are explaining Shutter speed priority (Tv), you accidentally said the same thing as when you turned it to Aperture priority, but actually when you turned the dial you were adjusting shutter speed, not F stop, so the F stop was changing to compensate.
Hi, awesome information, thank you for taking the time to provide it free of charge. I'm not great at reading manuals so audio and visual help is fantastic. Cheers.
+Media Unlocked I'm looking at TAMRON AF 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5 DIII LD ASPHERICAL SP IF LENS FOR CANON (B001E) Or SAMYANG 8MM F/3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II LENS FOR CANON I do landscape and have been looking at these ? It's all cause they are lower on costs
I am very new to the camera world. What settings would I use to take pictures at a softball game? I am just using the auto Green on the knob on the top left of the camera
Okay the way to custom setting works is that you pick a setting that you're going to be using all the time and you can label it custom one custom 2 or custom 3 or if you have anybody else that uses the camera you can personalize it that's what the custom does
OK, here I am in 2018 late to the party. But it's better late than never. It's very similar to the 6Dii and the 5Div though, so I could learn most of it in a few minutes.
I am enjoying the voice tone, speed & hands-on, Thank you, it was a great help. only the audio is a bit low, I had to wear the handsfree to here it, Keep it going kindly
Thank you so much, his is my first "real camera" and you explained it perfectly for my understanding. Great video! Also, would love to learn about Magic Lantern.
+john gabriel There is a setting in the menu to 'show focus point'. (Or something to that effect, I don't have my camera handy to look it up). When you review shots in-camera, you can see where your focus actually locked. That's what the red dot is indicating.
thank you. thank you, i went to best buy to see the new display they got which is 5d m3 but i was not able to use it. i call one the guys from bestbuy but nop noone in the store was able to use it. and im a nikon guy that wants to move to canon. so i thought, ill stay with nikon this canon 5d is way to hard to use and the buttons dont do what they say they do. but after i see your video. im getting the 5d very simple maybe something was wrong with the camera at bestbuy so anyways thank you
i keep getting soft focus in the eyes. and i shoot portraits and i cant get the red dot on the eye with only 9 foucs points . some people say use center point focus how will that get the eyes sharp
With a single point (could be in the center, or not : several options) : you half-press while pointing this "spot'" of the frame to the eye (or anything else) you want focus on, and when the focus is done you can move the framing as you wish and finish the press to actually take the photo: the thing that was at the focus point will be in focus.
hi this is bharat sunanda from india... i like this video and thanx for it..it is good to those who just started i want to know more about a walking focus on 5D(for video) if possible do let me know more about it it will be great full to me thanking you
You said the same thing for shutter priority and aperture priority. Correct for aperture, incorrect for shutter. Shutter priority allows you to change the shutter speed and it adjusts your aperture to match it.
I just got mine today and I realize that it has LESS stuff on the menu than what yours have??? is it because I need to update the firmware? (i think i have an old firmware), please let me know.

Can you tell me about magic lantern on canon 5d mark ii
Thanks
I got mine just before christmas. The full frame really makes a difference when low light gets involved
what’s the biggest capacity CF card and the fastest speed card you can put into the Mark ii? thanks
I would say 1tb that are coming out now have not tested it though.
Is there an equivalent to sport mode on this one?

Whats your opinion on Tamron lens for canon 5d mk2 i see you have one, i know they are cheaper compared to canon lens ?
+danmuss81 It depends on what lens it is. Some of their lenses are amazing others not so much.

I'm looking at TAMRON AF 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5 DIII LD ASPHERICAL SP IF LENS FOR CANON (B001E)
Or SAMYANG 8MM F/3.5 UMC FISH-EYE CS II LENS FOR CANON

I wonder why Canon built that Dial to have a separate ON button. Why not just make it default that the dial stays on?
How send photo camera to phone plz make one video
