    Unforgettable radio station ! In the 80's I used to listen RTL 208 every evening from 8PM until 3AM in the morning. Super music, incredible jingles, famous dj's...all was great on Radio Luxembourg ! I listened it on 1440 Khz MW with its so particular sound and fading effect, in France and also in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. How can died such a popular broadcasting program with millions of listeners everywhere in Europe !?... However thanks for all .

    radio Luxemburg is and remains the best I have listened to. the music was so good, whether it was one or two months of pop music before it came to Sweden, it was always fun to listen to, when you could get Radio Luxemburg all the time. before the broadcasts from Radio Luxemburg, it was Italy's radio broadcast where the hunt for the mafia was heard, then Radio Luxembourg started and everything was broadcast in the mid-frequency area and low wave. history of radio Luxembourg began in the 1930s and onwards. radio Luxemburg is also the only radio station that was occupied by the English and American ss-waffen during World War II. the feature in the media and advertising from radio luxembourg and the music and those who worked at radio luxembourg did a very good job and made it fun to listen to despite the interference to hear from radio luxembourg, i was always happy to hear from radio luxembourg every once, always. when Radio Luxemburg was shut down, it didn't feel fun, it became empty and quiet. I look back and you miss Radio Luxemburg every day, a radio station that is missed. even with one from Sweden who is fighting hard to get Radio Luxemburg in the hood. radio Luxembourg is missing forever.

    I remember the summer of 1990, the week I was looking for this famous radio station I had the time I was a holiday but no one in my circle of family or friends did not know exactly where to look for the radio. Commonly known was just a name and they listened to what was once just do not remember the details. It was only after a week I found information that Radio Luxembourg broadcasts on medium wave in 1500. Finally, the case before midnight came and I immediately knew that this is it! Really for me it was something incredible. Music buzzy, quality of sound, dj led in English .... Unfortunately, during the day it means not broadcast station emit normal radio program in German. Very often around 21.00 listened though I had bad reception. Then I did not have any information why the station just disappeared. There was no internet, satellite TV in its infancy .. After years until I learned everything and still can not understand how you can eliminate such an amazing radio station. Nowadays, I am convinced that such a radio would bring a lot of money because of the time despite all the technical innovations have not heard...

    • @anthonyperkins7556

      Radio Luxembourg thought that by discontinuing 208 metres MW 29th December 1991 for an Astra Satellite only future across Europe and 24h a day Shortwave transmission to Canada on 15350 kHz / 19.50 metres, that it could survive, however, they were wrong. Later in the year, CLT management all from banking and business fields started moving in and replacing RTL management, and they turned the spotlight on all of RTL's radio projects and reviewing them, and they wanted to charge each language department to hire the AM FM and SW transmitters.
      John Catlett who started up Atlantic 252 for the CLT in Ireland tried to advertise the station through a coupon in various broadcast trade magazines in a bid to try and get satellite radio stations, CATV networks across Europe and in the United Kingdom, and partner FM stations the UK and Europe / student radio stations and hospital radio in the UK to carry Radio Luxembourg from Astra, but response to this was very poor and at the time CLT didn't know how many were listening to the Radio Luxembourg service on Astra, and this is what they questioned, "how many are actually listening to us on Astra in Europe and in the United Kingdom?".
      Faced with this lack of listenership and poor response to the advertising campaign, CLT decided in September 1992 that they would no longer broadcast the English Service via Astra 1A satellite relay in stereo and shortwave and decided on a date of the 30th September 1992 to close it for good. From 1am UK to midnight UK on the 30th December 1992, Radio Luxembourg broadcast it's final day hurrah with 208 metres MW joining the fun from 7pm UK and at 12 midnight UK, Radio Luxembourg faded away with a German RTL Radio taking it's place.
      Today there's loads of commercial radio in Europe and the UK but NONE of them sound like Radio Luxembourg, or if they do, are a very feeble mediocre parady of the station we once loved and cherished. Radio Luxembourg 1933-1992 R.I.P.
      Don't ask about the relaunch of a Classic Rock Luxembourg on Digital Radio Mondiale technology via SW transmitters with a directional UK only beam - that was a total disaster : lack of receivers, frequent technical problems with the transmitters, and poor reception in the UK,. That feeble Luxy parody was forgettable at best.

    C'est vrai qu'on l'écoutait dans le jardin. Pour ne pas agacer les parents. Ce n'était pas tellement la musique qui les gênait mais le fading. J'avais tendu un fil de cuivre de 52 mètres pour améliorer la réception mais ce n'était quand même pas fameux.
    Mais on l'écoutait aussi en Néerlandais, le dimanche à midi. Ils avaient un fameux DJ : Peter Koelewijn. Puis en Allemand, "Die großen Acht" avec Camillo.
    Ces gens de Luxemburg 208 avaient inventé un style de radio. Même la pub était écoutable.

    • @anthonyperkins7556
      @anthonyperkins7556 2 года назад +1

      The rot first set in when Medium Wave 1440 kHz was given the shove, the adverts were pulled and the DJs contracts were not renewed end of 1991 which was Mistake No 1.
      Mistake No 2 was advertising the station in a broadcast journal to anyone who wanted to rebroadcast it and failing.
      Mistake No 3 was depending on Astra satellite distribution and via low power SW transmission to Quebec in Canada at a power of 50kW using 15350 kHz / 19.50 metres in the 19 metre band.

    • @owen671
      @owen671 2 года назад +1

      I agree with you there. They made the biggest mistake pulling it off AM. If it had moved to another MW or LW frequency that would have been ok. Worst mistake ever was going to the astra satellite. Most people back in 91 and 92 did not even have satellite. We did not get our first satellite system until 1996. I do however think radio luxembourg would work nowadays on the internet radio so you could pick it up with a smart speaker.

      @@owen671 Radio Luxembourg, set it up as RTL International, originally to target CATV systems in Scandinavia, but it got too much for them, as greedy cable operators wanted music royalty payments, which RTL declined to pay, so they turned it into a 24h Radio Luxembourg on Astra Satellite channel 13 RTL-4 11.391 GHz H partially scrambled Luxcrypt Stereo 7.38 / 7.56 MHz, and the reason why many cable TV system operators would not carry Radio Luxembourg from Astra 1A is because the encryption would knock out the audio on the vision carrier when it kicked in on certain programmes.
      To listen at home, it was a simple matter of connecting the stereo phono outputs of your satellite receiver with stereo phono leads to a spare input on your hi-fi, usually AUX or Line In and selecting Stereo 2 on your receiver.
      I would've used a stereo pair of sub-carriers on RTL Television Astra Channel 2 11.229 GHz V PAL Clear to make this a lot easier for cable systems to tune in and carry in stereo from the Astra 1A satellite to their subscribers and make it easier for direct to home Astra Satellite dish owners to receive and listen to.
      I would have also advertised the Radio Luxembourg satellite service on free to air UK and European Astra satellite TV and radio services too, to get instant recognition for it.
      The reason RTL got rid of 1440 kHz Medium Wave end of 1991 is because of the fading and unpleasant distortion, which was a big turn-off to advertisers, not to mention the half a million pounds cost of hiring the transmitter and paying a colossal hefty energy bill that outlet consumed, also the intern between RTL and CLT to hire that frequency was at an end too.
      I would have also carried Radio Luxembourg at night over the Atlantic 252 LW service after 7pm and modified the transmitter to give an omnidirectional beam pattern to Ireland, the UK and continental Europe keeping the same 500 kW power at night, and said "stuff Algeriia".....….
      I would've also explored other avenues to being in revenue -
      (a) looked at advertising being available in European languages throughout Astra 1A's footprint to advertisers,
      (b) buy in paid for programming such as religious programmes from time to time,
      and (c) hire airtime to organisations on 15350 kHz SW to bring in some additional cash as well plus broadcasting sponsored programmes.

      @@anthonyperkins7556 Thank you for letting me know why they quit MW .
      Back in 1991-92 It just was just not practical to use Astra satellite for radio as it just was too much trouble for most people to have to listen too it this way. People wanted an easy way to listen too it and not to have to invest in an expensive satellite system. Back then we all just switched over to atlantic 252 instead.
      I do agree with you that they should have just moved Luxembourg over to LW 252
      I still listen to many far off radio stations on my smart speaker
      The main question I would like to ask you is do you think radio Luxembourg would work today on internet radio if the English service came back? (This would be for alexa and google home smart speakers)

      @@owen671 Internet would be interesting, but not all areas of the UK have decent broadband connections or mobile phone reception for these devices, and I still think satellite should be an option i.e. in stereo on a Pan European beam using Astra 2G as it has the biggest Pan European beam @ 28.2 degrees East through Sky / Freesat as it's affordable now and not the expensive gamble it was back in the day plus I'd talk to Virgin Media about carrying this satellite feed in the UK via the cable system they have, and partner radio stations across Europe as well as cable systems in reach of the footprint around Europe on their programme service, and I'd look into additionally carrying a DAB+ stereo feed from the Astra 2 outlet through the Sound Digital Limited (SDL) multiplex from the satellite across the UK.
      Satellite radio from Astra's launch in 1989 did exist and was indeed carried on some cable systems in the UK and Europe, and some did make the effort to listen to it from Astra, like myself did.
