  • Part 1 of a project restoring a 1943 jeep and trying to get it back to original size and spec.
    In this first part we pull the jeep apart and cut the chassis back to its original size before fitting a replacement genuine tub.
    The take for a test drive!

    Really like your videos and a Great project you have there! i seen that jeep on flea bay a while back. you seem to have made light work of it.
    I really like the fact you chose to fit a genuine body tub as opposed to a new reproduction one, so many of these jeeps are built up of modern parts and passed off as "Wartime" ones with £45000 price tags. at least this way you know exactly what you've got and not a modern "Triggers Broom" .
    I know my way around these jeeps very well and have a few good friendly contacts for parts and general advice should you need.I also have a few good books too. I currently have a 1943 dodge wc 54 ambulance I have almost finished restoring.
    Let me know if you ever want to go for a road run to a good pub one day. I am based in Helston. Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing her finished. Matt

      Cheers, it was the only affordable jeep that I have come across that I thought I could achieve. Most are totally rotten out or missing engines/gearboxes.
      I also have an Abbot self propelled gun which is almost ready for the road and should be all registered and ready to go later this year... I intend to take that the the shows in cornwall that have military vehicles etc . Probably a bit slow for a road run 🤣
      Taken the jeep all apart again now to do it up properly, which will take a while. I also have a stalwart 6x6 to do so plenty of projects on !

    great to see an old Jeep getting put back to original status, nothing like preserving a piece of history
    now some years back, and pardon me if i am wrong here, i could have this the wrong way round, some told me years back how to tell the difference between a Hotchkiss and Willies that being on the forward corners of the rear wheel arches is a cut out, or if you like the forward inner corner was cut off and a triangle added - sure someone will put me straight, i've always wanted to know if i remembered correctly or if there was any truth to that

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes Theres a few different bits, people only really notice if they are very clued up though. One of the differences is the tops of the small tool boxes in the rear of the tub… mine has smooth lids but the ford one should have a indentation in them ! 😬

    • @patchmack4469
      @patchmack4469 5 месяцев назад

      @@BenoCam obviously between manufacturers took some short cuts in production, either making faster cheaper easier etc - i used to find it pretty interesting to learn some of the differences, but then you get into conversation with the anoraks rivet counters and tire kickers haha

    The later years Ford GPW has horizontal slots in the front grill because Willys-Overland got a patent on their Willys MB in 1943 which included the vertical slots. The later years civilian Willys CJ 2A has 6 vertical slots rather than the 9 slots.

    There are Jeep clubs here in the U.S. that specialize in the WWII era Jeeps. They a bunch of them together and go on off-road runs.

    Great video, good luck with the restoration! I'm doing a 1943 MB. That is not the original engine, well at least the head. I would have to inspect the block further. It has a CJ head though.

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  2 года назад +1

      Ah that’s interesting . The block has an MB number stamped on, I was led to believe it was ww2 but saying that it’s in suspiciously good condition so must have been refurbed at some point since !

      Sorry but I have never finished filming it 😬 got sidetracked by so many other things. The good news is that it only needs a few more jobs and some dry weather to paint and it will soon be finished for a part 2. They are such cool little toy cars. Will be great to throw some light weigh dive gear in the back and head off for the day in the summer. Did you also plate the chassis? I bought a series three not long ago someone has welded the rear cross member too high so I'll be following in your footsteps soon!

      Ha yeah be a good dive wagon ! Yeah I did plate it on the sides, seemed a shame for it to not look original but you can hardly see it unless you look for it and I didn’t want it snapping In half on me anywhere 🤣

      @@BenoCam i know what your going through, i recently bought a jeep from the neighbor it was a willys but the frame and tub were in bad shape so he replaced the frame and tub with what he could find (FORD TUB AND FRAME) and so when i went to get title it was a mess had to have our CHP come out and give new Id number and many hassles with dmv it is now declared a ford on title! good luck in restoring yours! the big expense you will run into is the inner windshield glass and rubber will be around 5-600.00 usd and 5 combat rims and tires 2000.00usd. The bow framefor the summer top is 5-700.00 usd depending on parts being original or aftermarket--I have found lots of needed mediocre parts from India on e-bay but they are cheap.--GOOD LUCK AND KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR RESTORATION!
