How do we learn self-control as children? What bolsters will power? What undermines it? Is self-control a skill that can be practiced and taught? How can we encourage young people to perform to their potential?

Wonderful to see research backed stuff on willpower by such an eminent psychologist like Roy instead of some mumbo jumbo " motivational " speaker
Oy vey!
Excellent review of the research. Looking to include it in my book on Habits with due acknowledgement.
One important factor not addressed here is the role of inner speech in self-control. See Tullett & Inzlicht (2010)
Fascinating!
Can anyone let me know, after you watch this video, if this makes sense. Recently I had an increase in sugar consumption this weekend. On Sunday I ate Mcdonalds, chocolate cake, and a handful of candy. Sunday is usually my free meal day where there are no restrictions, and during the week I am on a strict diet. The days that followed that Sunday I did very little, I woke up late and had a pretty nonproductive day. However, I kept up with my strict diet, but other than that my decisions were bad
If you force something to change, it will only be there as long as you are forcing your Will Power. You need to Learn How to "Let Your Will Work" Rather than Force, Force Negates.
You need coherence with your Lower Self (SubConscious, Body) with your Higher Self (Consciousness). To Have Coherence is being able to control your 3rd chakra which is your Will Power. You need to Know where Your Will Power is in the Body, which is your Solar Plexus.
To change a habit is to change your paradigm.
Wow love this
Could that Sunday from the sugar high to the days after to low sugars affected my decision making and will power? I recently am trying to change a lot of habits and last week I did very well this week I have gone back to all my bad habits. I wonder if what I ate on Sunday had a big impact on this.
🖤
Dear uploader, Would it be possible that the slides that Roy Baumeister uses in this presentation are shown/downloadable? Tnx!
Provocation .temptation, anger, fear ,hate, etc have nothing too do with freewill. We just control ourselves through our willpower. These are induced by impulsive reaction which does not involve any intent or thoughts evolved in our mind. These are powerful to control but can be controlled by our thoughts. These are impulsive actions. That is why any offences committed on provocation should be viewed in a different context. Freewill is and when we can have control over our thoughts and actions but that does not mean it is free from relevant motivational factors. Any non intentional ,instinct and random actions does not involve any freewill. .
all that come out of his mouth was pure shit willpower is an emotion like love fear hope so therfore it's limitless I promise
thanks pete
Does the desire for BDSM stem from ego depletion?
so what your saying is people that smoke or eat unhealthy have no willpower people are going to do bad things and these people might have more willpower than healthy people doing what you wish and willpower are to different things what your talking about is people should live different I don't think willpower works that way it's just an emotion some people are just fucked up
This guy talks way too fast.
Jose Dd No, he doesn`t, it`s just fine ;)
+Jose Dd go to settings (thats the little grey wheel thing next to the CC in the little box to the lower right of the video screen) and slow down the audio
you can lower the speed from settings of the video
You listen to slow.
That's because he is brilliant :-)
