This game was non stop end to end action. This game was no joke compared to present playoff action. All the thrills, hits, you could ask for and more. GREAT GAME. ❤❤❤❤
@@marblox9300 Those were super cool too, FOR SURE, and in 1973, his first Leafs mask, but he made it that much cooler in 1974! His first Colorado mask is great, and it was great that he tried the safer cage mask...They are ALL super cool masks!
Some observations- GAG line split up- Hadfield with Tkaczuk and Nevin. Park not much ice time- top pair- Rolfe and Tim Horton. Turnover on blue line leads to game winner for Bob Nevin. Nevin Rangers Captain traded after season for Bobby Rousseau with Vic Hadfield assuming Captaincy. Correct first Rangers playoff series win since 1950. Tough 6 game series with Leafs. Rangers 2nd place playing 4th place Leafs while 1st place Bruins play 3rd place Canadiens. Upset led to change following season no doubt to 1-4, 2-3. Last no reseeding- Rangers play tougher Blackhawks while Canadiens get creampuff North Stars in next round. Good memories from this post.
Keon plays with intelligence, logic and intent. He seems difficult to contain and neutralize. A difficult and problematic foe that requires advanced planning and structure.
and they lost a 7 game final to Detroit in ‘50 with FIVE games played in the Olympia and I think two in Toronto because of the lousy ringling bros and barnamum bailey.
As this series began, things did not look good for the Rangers. They won game one - but only just barely. Leafs won games two and three. Manyu fans of the Rangers were convinced that there'd be yet another first round elimination.
Yes they were. I worked at CBC for 36 years, and in those days, but the copies are in black and white due to the process they used in those days. I was 11 when this game was played, and began working there in 1984.
Wow what a thriller, a battle between two of the greatest goalies of all time Jacque Plante and Eddie Giacomin, love those stand up goalies, nowadays these floppers masquerading as net minders, dress up like the Michelin Man and lay in front of the net, ED-DIE...ED-DIE...ED-DIE, Lets Go Ran-gers!
As a flyers fan, One of the few things I like about the Rangers was Eddie. Excellent goalie and very entertaining in net. Also enjoyed listening to Jim Gordon and the big whistle on channel 9 when we 1st got cable in South Jersey.
This is Nevan's last season as a Ranger and Horton played two seasons with the Rangers before moving to Pittsburgh then the Sabres. Plante played 4 seasons with the Leafs before near the end of his career.
@@ldhorricks Plante played for Toronto in 1970, 1971, and part of 1972 before being traded to Boston. He was sensational in 1970! My heart was broken in game 6 against the Rangers when Nevin (Ex-Leaf, a great contributor to the team!) scored against the great Jacques Plante in OT to end the series, and then my feeling that... FEELING, UGH
The NHL didn't even begin broadcasting on TV until 1952 I believe, so there is only sporadic film footage from before then. All 1950s broadcasts look very old and dated, even next to black-and-white footage from the early '70s.
@@ldhorricks The first game ever broadcast on CBC in 1952 was the Detroit Red Wings against the Montreal Canadiens. The Red Wings were the defending Stanley Cup Champions at the time.

I’ve been a Ranger fan since 1962. This was the first time I ever experienced them winning a series in the playoffs.

Except for the ending, UGH... A recent great playoff game was Brock Boeser and the Canucks comeback win against Nashville last spring!
The nets were cooler looking back then than todays square soccer type.
I'm impressed by the SPEED! So many of these older games seem to have a much slower pace.
Even the refs were faster!
Watching Keon. Man he was all over the place and so quick.
Awesome player, my favorite as a kid AND Jacques Plante was amazing!!!!! Effen idiot Rangers!!!!!!!!!
I remember this game. My sister got married 3 days later. They will celebrate 49 years this April 18th.
Nice
Great series
Giacomin had the coolest mask.
Doug Favell's 1974 Maple Leafs was the coolest... To ME!
@@elvicare35 Doug Favells Philadelphia Orange/White Starburst was his best.

Bob Baun played great
I remember him remarking about how tough this series was that “even my hair hurt.”

Right, Ted Hampson "scored" a fraction of a second after the blue light came on ending game 6. Stars gave the Habs a very tough series.
creampuff? bs
Great memory
Hadfield was a bit of a hot-headed punk!

Right on, my first favorite player!

Circus lol

Tim Horton against the Leafs?
I'm guessing this is the last time the Leafs and Rangers met in the playoffs?
Yep - the only time these teams have met since the Original Six days.
@@alexleonard3561 It almost happened in 94, but the Leafs lost to Vancouver in the semi-final.

It's called expansion ... plenty of players moved around after 1967 when the expansion opened up plenty of spots.

Rangers couldn’t play at home in the playoffs until the late 50’s because of the circus. Hard to win series when you have to play neutral site games.
Pre helmet Tkaczuk.
And a pre-helmet Ron Ellis.
Shifts were too long.
1967 maple laughs forever!
not sure if 1971 or 1951
it is definitely not 1951...look who's playing on each team...

Nevin gets the winner, but he almost single handily cost the rangers against the black hawks in the following series. Too slow and too many turnovers.
