  • I picked up a Sharp MD-MS721-S Mini Disc Recorder to be able to record my own MD's. This one came with a few issues, but the seller said it worked. Does it?
Partially. Playback was working, recording not, battery barely holds charge, remote lead had seen better days. I don't know much about MDs so lets open it up and see what we find.

Using a tip you mention in this video (to remove and reseat the ribbon cables) I was able to fix a digital camera I bought I online! Thanks!

    Update!
At the end, where I say these wires shouldn't foul anything...guess what? They did, and I was wrong. D'oh! They actually stop the magnet head from lowering properly and needed rerouting - now I'm getting better results - still not great, but better. Short clip to come addressing the issue.
At this stage I think the laser pickup is a bit dodge, so this might be as good as it gets.

You could just put some shrink tubing on your remote cable...

You can't get the shrink tubing on without desoldering something, so might as well do a proper fix.

No, I have been meaning to install the new laser unit, but just haven't got around to it yet. One day...

People often tell half truths when selling stuff, its very annoying ;-(.
Thin enameled copper wire is handy for links :-D
Keep tinkering, its worth a bit of love :-D

Yes, it's a little disappointing, but I suppose to be fair it did technically play when I received it. Just record didn't work, and as I have discovered that is probably something to do with that broken cable.
We are on the same wavelength regarding the enameled wire - I picked some up the other day.
I missed out on another one in better condition, but with a broken remote. Would have been a good pickup because although the remote was broken, they said everything else works, and it came with an external battery pack which uses a standard AA. Was too slow on that one.
This one is thrashing around too much, I don't have high hopes that it will come good, so I'll put it aside while I search for a second one.
In the mean time I have record player I need to get back to. That might be next week now.

Hi Filix. Could you help me with the exact position of the wires in the remote control please?
I have another Sharp model though (Sharp MD-MT290H), but I believe the wires colour setup is similar.

I'll dig through and see if I have any photos. I'm in a different country at the moment so it isn't handy...

The only photos I could find are for a different style of remote. One thing I noticed is that the PCB had the colour codes printed on it, though in kanji, though a bit simplified like this:
      black:黒 blue:青 white:白 green:緑 yellow:黄 brown:茶
I don't know if that helps.

@@felix_da_katze Thank you. I'll try it, my PCB is blank anyway and wires of different colours.
