- Producer David Chase became a TV legend with his groundbreaking HBO series, "The Sopranos." Now, 14 years after the show's cryptic finale, Chase is returning to the roots of his central character in a prequel film, "The Many Saints of Newark." Correspondent Jim Axelrod talks with Chase about the pressures to revisit the Sopranos' crime world and the origins of Dickie Moltisanti and Uncle Junior; with actor John Magaro, who plays Silvio Dante; and with Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, who plays a youthful version of the mob boss made famous by his father.

My dad loved the Sopranos just wish he were here to watch this with me.
Rest in peace Dad & James Gandolfini
Right here with you fam
I was too young and my dad (single dad) wouldn't let me watch with him late at night, but I'd sneak in the living room and I remember scenes here and there. I just finished watching the series and it has so much nostalgia for me as a child. I'm really sorry to hear about your dad..

In a weird way I’m actually kind of nervous for David Chase. Its such a gutsy thing to revisit something like The Sopranos that is on the very short list of most influential and impactful pieces of work in pop culture history.

I'm not really expecting much, Jon Bernthal seems to play the same character every movie/tv show he's in. Don't get me wrong, he play's a badass really well, but beyond that not much

Without a doubt. There was TV before the Sopranos and TV after the Sopranos. And nothing has been as good.

Thanks Jim Axelrod, and Jane Pauley and CBS support staff.
Great informative reporting. Always piques my interest. 👌
There are a lot of performances to look forward to in this one, but I am very excited to see Vera Farmiga play Livia Soprano. That character was so rich on the show, and she was the main reason Tony was in therapy to begin with. I imagine Vera's going to be channeling an even more twisted version of Norma Bates for this role.
That's so true! I forgot she did Bates Motel!!!
The movie really does truly look good. You can tell they put alot of work and care into this unlike most of the other crap Hollywood pumps out just for a quick buck. The film is going to be good for sure.
I've imagined Dickie was slightly more empathetic towards Tony as opposed to Tony and Christopher.
Michael Gandolfini seems like a great new actor
I am so grateful to Mr. Chase for the show and this movie, he is an amazing storyteller.

Oh my god that Silvio portrayal is goooood. Can't wait for this movie.

@@Jack-jx2ug Who's that speaking here? Is somebody speaking?

Of course I waited long for this movie, I don't live in Oshkosh!
There's no way Chase would make a sequel to the TV show since it would be hard not to reveal what happened to Tony unless it features someone far from Tony. It would be a pale imitation of the show without James Gandolfini or Sirico (too old now). Prequels are fair game, though.
I have to believe that Tony survives because the war was over and I can't think of anyone who was gunning for him; nothing in the story leads to that conclusion. What probably did happen though is that with Carlo's testimony backed up by years of Raymond's tapes, Tony goes to jail, maybe, for the rest of his life.
EDIT: I’m just trying to justify it but I can’t. Makes sense he caught it. Everything from his convo with Bobby to Sil’s close call at that dinner to the Sopranos being a glorified crew and not worthy of NY’s respect anyway. Why should Butchie keep his word to Tony? Nobody up there would care if he got killed. Like Butchie himself said, we deal with whatever is left.
@@paperbakwriter2886 It's extremely obvious that Tony was killed by the man in the Members Only Jacket. The clues are all there. Bobby "you probably never hear it coming." Also Eugene is wearing the same jacket when he kills someone in a diner in an earlier season whose initials are A.S. There is no way Chase would do that for no reason. He has said before that the clues are there you just have to figure it out for yourself. It was probably New York that turned on Tony to tie up lose ends. They couldn't not retaliate against a "glorified crew" that took out the boss of one of the five families. Especially considering the way Phil was killed right in front of his wife. So Tony gets taken out in the same way. Shot in the back of the head in front of his family.
@@patrickmorrissey3084 Even more clues: The hitman walks into the bathroom before killing Tony, just like Michael Corleone does in Godfather before killing the Solozo and McClusky. That scene from Godfather is confirmed by AJ to be Tony's favorite. This next clue is really the nail in the coffin. The editing in the final scene itself. The pattern: Front doorbell rings, Camera shows Tony, Camera shows Tony's POV looking at door, Camera shows Tony again. This pattern repeats every time the door opens and someone walks in. In the final shots of Meadow rushing in, it repeats but cuts to black when it is supposed to show Tony's POV. The credits don't come on for 5 seconds. There is no music, the only episode to feature none in the credits. Tony sees nothing. The music stopped. He's dead.
@@tcjester89 Some people are too dense to pick up on any of that and refuse to see it even once it is pointed out for them.
@@paperbakwriter2886 Tony did plenty throughout the series to elicit a hit on him from the other families. They could explain it in a thousand different ways.
Does David Chase ever smile? I”m glad it matters to him how the fans feel because we, or at I, can’t get enough of this show. Keep bringing it Mr Chase.
apparently the word on the street is that David Chase developed his personality in a car crash
Michael Gandolfini looks like he completly nailed this and I am sure it wasn't easy but stepping into this role for anyone wouldn't be easy, playing a younger version of one of the most iconic characters ever created but it's also now hard to imagine how anyone but Michael could've played his father's iconic character because he looks and sounds so much like his dad.
The transition from a young Tony soprano in season 1 @ 5.40 to the now Michael Gandalfoni is incredible

I’m from Generation X, and was into my 20’s when Sopranos started. I’m not sure how it could have possibly influenced our generation, it was just an entertaining show.
My only gripe is Silvio is meant to be at most 2 years older then Tony but they have a 38 year old playing Silvio as if he’s already in the mob. Also Christopher is supposed to be like 10 years younger then tony he mentioned being picked on at 9
