- Driverless car engineer and Pronto CEO Anthony Levandowski says truly autonomous vehicles are years - if not decades - away. So he’s focused on applications in the here and now, including delivering solutions for the mining and trucking industries. Bloomberg's Max Chafkin reports.

Tech and auto giants have spent years hyping self-driving cars as a just around the corner innovation that would make our streets safer. Instead, they’re increasingly looking like a $100 billion flop.
They were supposed to be the future. But prominent detractors-including Anthony Levandowski, who pioneered the industry-are getting louder as the losses get bigger.

The question in the title was not answered.
Yep just another peice of propaganda from closed minded people who think the world and tech will just be the same forever. As if humans havent always found ways to use technology to save them work. Currently, the only thing i have to drive myself is out the driveway and a couple turns. My tesla parks for me when i get there, stops at lights, changes lanes and takes the right exit for me. Its pretty much already there.
This is basically a long advert for Pronto. Clickbait.
You know we already have fully autonomous AND safe vehicles. They're called trains.
North American car lobbyists would like to have a word with you
Great comment. And also do you know any good book to learn how did this transaction happened? I mean from railroads to cars.
Trains go on a track
Fully autonomous?🤔 It's fine, it's gonna be ok🤪😂
they serve different purposes
Clickbait title
The title and the content are in parallel universes to each other. Not sure how Mr. Lewandowski's statement that "fully driverless cars are years if not decades away" differs from the industry's general view.
I agree, if we don't include fraud Musk's views in your statement...
What is industry's view?
Wouldn’t it be easier to build out a more robust rail infrastructure/network, then add autonomy to that?
Yeah, cars were a mistake.
No expert here, but my intuition is that rail is more expensive per mile than road.
On another hand, rail might be easier to automate, but that comes at the cost of flexibility.
If you want to have lanes where no people are allowed to control the vehicles (like in rail), then you could build roads specifically for self driving cars.
@@diogoantunes5473 I agree. However the only way self driving cars will be successful and safe is if the entire car industry is replaced with self driving. Otherwise there will always be some nutter on the road
@@bharathvarma2611 They are in cities, imagine self driving solar powered ubers. That would be great. For long distances to specific places maglev is a much better option
Lewandowski the thief
Economies of scale and unit of economics. Just like anything in business. It’s business. Gotta be sustainable dude.
This is an interesting dilemma. Those professionals who dealt with the earlier versions of the artificial intelligence winter or AI winter understand that we may be going down a deep deep rabbit hole that leads to nowhere when it comes to figuring out the right AI model in order to make automation more than simply back end variables For a B 2 B process.
A problem with the current AI models that try to use computer vision and such to bring this technology to a more consumer level is the unpredictability that can’t be captured reliably as well as the math that can’t predict the chaos enough. Sprinkle on top of that, the fact that human beings fell in love with the nature of having their own autonomy and are not likely within this cycle of turning relinquish any control of their driving which is a symbol of freedom.
These many factors from cultural, public sector, private sector and technology limitations play very interesting role in the wayward evolution of everything the video was talking about.
You just gave more of an explanation than this whole video did, and a fine one at that. Thanks!
It’s simple to start by blocking off inner cities and creating autonomous vehicle lanes on highways. Propaganda like this is paid for by fossil fuel companies and legacy manufacturers
I dont want to drive a car that spies on everything and everyone 360 and which pumps data to big tech with unwanted intrusive ads and so called recommendations on the dashboard.
I agree with Anthony. The self driving meatheads will never agree.
Why?
I personally like driving my own car. I don't like that out of control feeling, and I will never trust a computer more than a "sane" humans judgements. I cant even fall asleep in a car or in a plane with a human controlling it, much less nobody at the wheel😲 No thank you!
Actually unfortunately you can drive your car completely safely but then someone on the road near you could be driving after too much alcohol, driving in safely by speeding or by ignoring the stop sign or stoplight or by having illegal to drugs and driving after taking them and then he can be in an accident. Happens unfortunately too much
@@enjoyslearningandtravel7957 yes I understand that of course, but would much rather have control of my vehicle on my end. Better than both vehicles being controlled by someone not really at the wheel, one mentally & the other physically.
When autonomous driving will be safer than humans on average this will be a destructive and dangerous mindset actually costing lives
