    Nifty - I always presumed that they were the same plant, just in different stages of development.

    To me: Henbit looks like tall open umbrellas to me and deadnettle looks like closed umbrellas if stringy/lanky or just short and bushy in my yard.

    I am shocked that people can ingest these. I can't even move or pull them out without having a bad coughing fit and my throat feels like it is closing up.

    Thanks for the comparison. Now, I will be looking for another edible the Henbit, since just recently, I had learned about the Purple Dead Nettle from another source and had just added a handful into my morning smoothie.

    Thank you for taking the time to explain! I see these all over my neighborhood and I wanted to try them. I now know what is abundant within my neighborhood are the purple dead-nettle.

    really got a LOT of good info ... hmmm now I'm wondering if I have both, or just Deadnettle. I'm xeriscaping, leaving the ones in that area, but mowing, with a catcher, in other areas ... the small BB sized seeds, are like velcro in pet hair, and clothing ... I love the early Spring Carpet of Color ... update : what I had posted to xeriscape group is actually "Storksbill Weed" ... great, they all look so similar, till the "Stork's Bill" starts to show ahahaha

    Thanks! The flowers on my dead nettle are not narrow, as most of the pictures show, but the lower petals are much wider than the upper hood. Still, it tastes fine, I'm glad to know for sure, if I ever should need it.

    thank you for this video. i found both of these in my yard this year. i was familiar with henbit (i call it bunny flower since i was a little girl) and when i discovered deadnettle i was really surprised because it seemed like a different plant had the same “bunny flowers”! very curious. i hope to learn more. i love to cultivate wild edibles

    Purple Dead Nettle has a square stem, and to my mind smell of soil or dirt.

    Can we eat both of them?

    • @ElizabethRussell144
      @ElizabethRussell144 3 года назад

      Yes, but you need thick gloves and have to cook the Stinging Nettle before you eat it so that you don't get your hands ir mouth stung. Dead Nettle you don't need gloves or to take any special precautions. That's why it's important to tell the difference : )

    I have Henbit each spring that i am now luring, and understanding. I always pull the little weed and trash, however this spring, i find the name of this little herb that finds me each spring so pretty and green with the little purple flower, learning it is mint related, and used for medicines, and healing so i have some drying now to use.
