While taking apart the salvage auction Range Rover we find a timing tensioner not set correctly and new timing parts. Since this car was at the dealer the same time it died it had to have been at the fault of a tech who performed the job incorrectly.

If the dealer damages the cars they win by getting a new or pre-owned buyer, most people will not fight that hard(suing) because they either don't know enough about cars or don't want to get involved in a legal battle. Of course the crooked dealers know this and that is why they damage cars with impunity. I never take my cars to a dealer unless its for a recall. I service my own cars and if its to complicated I'll take it to an independent mechanic. You always gotta ask yourself if there is a conflict of interest.

Ouch, that hits close to home. I regrettably bought an 2006 RX-8 about 10 years ago now. At the end of the first year of owning the car...engine goes out. Replaced it. Radiator cracked. Replaced it. All four low profile tires worn out. Replaced them. I immediately repaired my old 2001 Honda Civic and stuck the RX-8 into my moms garage and never touched it again. The RX-8 was so fun to drive but...wow...it sure cost a lot. And yes, I did check the oil every other fuel fill up as recommended.

I know, right. Bought a new WRX, about 2 years into ownership and only allowing the dealer to maintain it, it developed a horrible ticking noise that was even noticed by the service desk employees. Their head technician then spent 3 days trying to “recreate” the noise, and he said he could not recreate the extremely loud and very, VERY, noticeable ticking. He then proceeded to tell me that “Subaru engines are made to tick” my friend that gave me a ride up there walked off cause he knew I was about to blow my top, which I did, and told him to run inside and grab a key to any new WRX on the lot and start it and we will compare the ticking, he refused to do that. He also told me he has been working on WRX’s 2 years before they were even an idea 😂. (I’m a certified mechanic, so I know what is an abnormal noise in a vehicle) well after I did some inspecting it was a exhaust leak from the exhaust header to the up pipe, thank goodness, but I just said forget it and forget the warranty after even contacting Subaru of America and they did nothing to help me. Needless to say I’m not very impressed with Subaru as a company and their ability to maintain customer satisfaction and fix an issue that’s as small as an exhaust gasket replacement. I also have access to lubrication analyses equipment and have multiple certifications in lubrication technology, and tested the oil in my car, they have been putting 0w20 oil in that car, even though the manual states to put nothing lower then 5w30 and if you drive the car hard the manual recommends 5w40 or 10w40. So since then they have not touched my car and they never will again and I will never give Subaru the courtesy of giving them my hard earned money by purchasing a new Subaru.

There is some sort of ethic to be followed as you get a title with the owners information but its not responsible to continue to try and contact them. They don't owe me anything, but I'd still love to chat with them. Who knows what was disclosed to them when they traded this in to the dealer???

@@wrenchmonger I understand what you are telling me. I am an old school guy. I was taught technology, metallurgy, thermal treatments, adjustments, pre-CNC machinery use (lathe, milling machine, rectifiers, and others), welding, copper-craft, hydraulics, pneumatic, electricity to work on battle tanks. Not only did I understand how it worked, but I could also put parts together by simply following blue prints. That's a job.
Today, the guys that work the "Fast Lane" have no or very little understanding of what they do. So little, that during my last oil change, they managed to not tight the oil filter on my spouse's car. She did notice some oil drips underneath it, but thought it was normal, and was just wiping it clean. Eventually, as she was backing up, I noticed a small oil river underneath. Checked the level, it was not visible on the dip stick.
The dealership apologized, and fixed it for free. I usually receive a survey following a service, but in this case, I did not. I can only imagine the consequences of running the engine until the oil warning lit.
Long story short, knowing how to perform a particular job is fine. Understanding what you are doing is, at least to me, essential to do a good job. Over-tightening is just as bad as under-tightening. Each nut, screw, bolt has a specific torque. I bet most of our fast line guys have no idea what should be the torque of the sump plug, and the gasket needs to changed each time, because once it has been strain-harden, it no longer fulfill its task...

What I've learned owning an "unreliable" car: 99% of unreliability is caused by 2 things. Dealer networks without a commitment to proper service, and independent shops afraid to work on cars they don't understand.
Recently asked for some pretty basic service on my car, and have gotten two shops that gave me "We don't work on foreign jobs" answer, felt like I was back in the 1970s. The third shop came back with an astronomical quote, asking about 10 hours of labor on a job that's about 5 hours of labor according to alldata (and 3 hours according to the dealer). Job's not hard. It's just a mindset.
Most reliability issues come back to bad service. And some brands just get the short end of the service stick.

The 5.0 V8 in these is the AJ-Series and they are very reliable engines---installed in literally hundreds of thousands of Jaguars and Land Rovers over the past 15 years. The timing chain tensioner is a well-known issue with 2010-era ones, as well as water pumps that fail around 70K miles. 2012 and later ones have the new tensioners and a water pump replacement is $400 at an independent shop. Use good synthetic and change the oil regularly and these engines will give you 500+ HP for 150K miles easy.

When the short occurs, the resulting arcing can actually weld the tool to the terminal. When that happens, all you can do is walk away and watch the resulting destruction from a safe distance. From that day on, I'm very cognizant about working around batteries, and never rest conductive tools on them or close to them. (I see a wrench laying on top of the battery around the 15:00 mark.)

FYI, I've had several engines with skipped/shredded timing chains/gears and a couple of them had pistons that looked like this. I didn't change the pistons in either.
One was perfectly fine. The other suffered from a compressed upper piston ring groove. This caused the engine to have slightly lower compression than it should have as well as burn oil (with lots of blowby - pulsing from the valve cover whenever that cylinder fired). It still had plenty of power at high rpms. I drove it for another 100,000 miles, adding a quart of oil every ~2000 from then on...
