  • Andrew Naselli unpacks the phrase "Once Saved, Always Saved."
Andrew David Naselli is an associate professor of systematic theology and the New Testament at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis and one of the pastors of the North Church in Mounds View, Minnesota. He is also the author of 'Romans: A Concise Guide to the Greatest Letter Ever Written'. Naselli traces Paul’s argument for the gospel throughout this concise and accessible guide to the book of Romans. Designed to be read alongside the epistle itself, it provides accessible, standalone commentary unpacking the text verse by verse. This volume dives into the key themes of righteousness, peace, and God’s promises, accompanied by reflection questions on interpretation and application-perfect for individual or group study.

*OSAS is true but true only for those born again. Not everyone who confesses Christ is.* And OSAS is true because every part of faith is by grace, which includes falling and getting up and persevering. The best example of OSAS is the Chosen People. They did not choose God he chose them, and he will never give them up, ever. But perfection and perseverance are not the world I would use to describe them. David blundered very badly, and suffered much for it, but he was still the favorite of the LORD.

The first person to espouse the idea of "Once Saved, Always Saved" was John Calvin in the mid. 16th century. Even Martin Luther did not subscribe to this teaching. Prior to Calvin, the unanimous consent of early Christians was that a person is capable of losing salvation by committing a grave sin without repentance as John spoke about in 1. John 5:16-17.
No suggestion of once saved, always saved cannot be found on the lips of any Christian before Calvin.

    Oh boy.
You're either truly eternally secure or your not.
I believe scripture is clear that a true born again believer cannot lose or walk away from their salvation.
Why? We know that God cannot lie. It's impossible.
We know that the word of God is perfect, with no contradictions whatsoever.
If it did contradict itself then it's no different from any other book and is not from a perfect God.
So, with that understanding and truth of God's word, what do we do with the scriptures that seem to say something other than the truth of eternal security? We have to rightly divide and keep scripture in context.
We have to look at scripture as a whole when we see those questionable scriptures.
It's not the scripture that's the issue, it's our understanding of the context.
When we truly understand that we are free and sealed... this gives us a greater desire to serve and walk in a way that's pleasing to our King, not grieving the Holy Spirit.
We should not be walking out our salvation in fear of losing it. That's ridiculous and not what God intended.
Our complete, 100% trust for our salvation must be on the finished work of Christ on the cross and His precious blood, not anything to do with our actions or non actions.

    GRACEFOLK MINISTRIES
Unborn Again? Impossible. You Cannot Lose Your Salvation.
Scripture is clear that once you become a child of God through faith, you can never lose your salvation. However, eternal security continues to be discussed, doubted, and debated within Christian circles. So let's take a deeper look.
    • The following article has been written by David Novitsky.
If salvation could be lost or undone once spiritual rebirth has already occurred in a believer, God would then have to do numerous things the Bible never speaks of or teaches Him doing to anyone! Surely the scriptures would clearly illustrate these things if it were true?
    Follow along...
God would have to pass me back into death from the eternal life that He already gave me.
God would have to remove me spiritually from being seated with Christ in heavenly places.
God would have to "un-join" me from Christ.
God would have to "un-wash" me from the blood of Jesus that already washed me.
God would have to "un-seal" me from the Holy Spirit.
God would have to "re-place" my sins back onto me that He already removed as far as the east is from the west.
God would would have to now remember my sins that He already "remembers no more".
God would have to break His own covenant He made with His Son and therefore would make Him a liar (and we know God cannot lie).
God would have to "un-adopt" me as His child.
God would have to leave me and forsake me even though He promised to never do so (again God cannot lie).
God would have to "pluck me" from His own hand in which He already promised nothing could ever do!
God would have to "take back" the free gift He already gave to me.
God would have to "un-do" the righteousness He already imputed to me from Jesus.
God would have to fail to raise me on the last day going back on His promise to do so (God cannot lie).
God would have to fail in completing the good work in me He already promised to complete.
God would have to ignore all the prayers of His Son on our behalf who is interceding for us as believers.
God would have to ultimately reverse the once for all sacrifice made by His own Son and ignore it like it never happened.
I could go on for days with this! But hopefully you get the picture.
    Titus 3:5 KJV
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Did you watch the video? It teaches the perseverance of the saints which you also talk about, but also addresses verses such as Colossians 1:21-23 and 1 Timothy 4:1 plus the various Hebrews passages some times referred to as the "warning passages." "Once saved, always persevering" is a more thoughtful and accurate summation of what Scripture teaches us over "once saved, always saved."
I agree with you, you are either eternally secure or you are not. The video does not dispute that but concisely makes an argument over a potentially better way of understanding a common saying within the church.

@doulostouchristou yes, I did watch it.
The feeling I got from that was a subtle 'you are eternally secure... BUT'
That leaves young Christians in doubt and focused on themselves and their sin instead of resting in God's amazing grace and the perfect, complete sacrifice of Jesus.
That's also why when we teach new, and even older Christians for that matter, that we are eternally secure and the Holy Spirit now begins that work in us to help us walk each day in the spirit and not the flesh.
Will we fail, make bad choices, sin? Absolutely, but if we were truly born again we will despise it and desire to walk out put salvation in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.
It felt like a subtle back-loading of the gospel to me. Just another incomplete message of the gospel and our new walk.
