I watched my grandfather plant potatoes many, many years ago. He had a bag of old potatoes he called seed potatoes. He would quarter the bigger ones and keep the small ones whole, as you have. After plowing the soil he would use a string for a straight line then go along with his bag, use the heel of his boot to dig a hole drop a tater in there cover it up and tamp down gently with the sole of his boot and move on. I'm sure he learned that from his dad and so on. We always had potatoes, bigguns too!

Kitty poo, as all predator poo, is not a good fertilizer. Matter of fact it is BAD because a gut microbe can get into your food chain and harm young, old, weak folks. Probably healthy ones too. If it has two eyes facing forward, it's a predator! Eyes on the side on the head, that fertilizer is great, depending how "hot" it is.

    Great video!
We've grown them successfully in buckets, raised beds, and the ground. Potatoes are one of those crops that we grow every year, and there is nothing in the world like a fresh, homegrown potato.
For anyone who came here curious about doing it, I highly recommend you do it. They don't take much work at all, and the end product is totally worth it.

I agree!!!! My husband and I grew potatoes for the very first time this year and we grew them in boxes!! Certainly one can gather together free boxes, but we bought large Lowe’s moving boxes. Boy did they do great!! We were sooooo excited at harvest time, the anticipation of waiting 3 months to finally discover what one has grown under the ground is so exciting that I have to say everyone needs to try growing them. They are fun and so easy to grow.

@@thanos8403During the Irish Potato Famine, millions of Irish died. Potatoes were all they had during the cold season, and they provided them with all the nutrients they needed; so much so that their population doubled from 4 million to 8 million! They literally had NOTHING ELSE to eat!
Read the book by Dr John McDougall about The Starch Solution. He makes a hypothesis about the fact that people can survive potatoes alone. During the Holocaust, potatoes were the only food source available and kept many alive and well during these periods of starvation.
I would suggest you do your research on potatoes before giving an unfounded opinion.

For people who don't have access to raised beds, grow bags work very well! Fold the sides down and plant the potatoes like she shows here. As the shoots start coming up, add more soil to the bag, raising the sides up a little at a time. By the time the bag is completely unfolded and the soil line is almost at the top, allow the shoots to keep going, flowering, and then once they yellow and fall over, dump the bag out and harvest your potatoes.

Right. Why waste a whole potatoe to grow a potatoe. I just cut mine for mashed potatoes tonight, took the skin with eyes out and made 2 rows of potatoes in the garden out of peels from 1 supper. Win win

Gigi Same here hon. We always cut them so that each eye was planted separately when possible. Made it go further. Didn’t seem to weaken the plant or affect harvest. It was usually drought or something else that would bother harvest.

I am considering planting along my drip line on an in-ground plot that will receive water every couple days. I have my concerns as I have not grown potatoes before. I have no reason to believe it's that different from growing other veggies but perhaps I should consider putting them in one of our raised beds instead (if the wife will share). Great video. Appreciate what you do.
