    I ordered the navy one from S&M last winter. I didn't enjoy the flappy fabric or the fit. I returned the S&M Ulster and bought a polo coat from Suitsupply instead and love it!

    Hey, I love the content you have been putting out and have gone back and watched your prior stuff as well. One thing I might suggest as feedback is that the sound of your voice has trouble coming through in the video. I like the addition of the music, but with the voice volume as it is they end up competing. Many RUclipsrs i regularly watch use a small mic that clips to their shirt placket. That might allow you to allow the great stuff you're saying to stand out audio-wise. Great stuff though, keep it up.
    I moved up near Toronto recently and may have to give Spier and Mackay a visit in person!

      I had a lav mic in the past, but the sound was worse. I've got a boom mic right above my head there, though I can reduce the music volume further in the future. It's down to about 10 percent of it's original volume now.

    Very helpful video! Just curious for S&M, what jacket size do you normally wear and did you choose the same size / length for the coat as well? Thinking of getting one as well. I don’t wear tailoring often so it’ll be more for over sweaters or dress shirts so I was thinking of going down one size.
    Also, I didn’t see it in the video but does this coat cover your knee? How far past? Thank you!

    • @gentlemenscholarsclub
      @gentlemenscholarsclub  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, it covers the knee down to the top of the calf; for reference, I am 5'11". I normally wear 38 contemporary in the jackets. I have a peacoat that I sized up to 40, but I would probably do a 38 if I did it over (no sport coat worn under it). This Ulster I got as 38 and it is full fitting but just right over a jacket. If you size down, it might work with no jacket under(check the measurements), but it may not have the intentionally full look they wanted to do with the Ulster style.

    Nice pick up. I have the same permanent style Donegal coat as you do, and am thinking of picking up this S&M Ulster as well. Do you think it's justifiable to have both coats? Or they are different enough from each other, style wise, color wise and such. Lastly, do you think I'd be able to lengthen the turn back cuffs on this coat, as I'd like to get the short version but am afraid the sleeves might be a tad bit short. Thanks

    • @gentlemenscholarsclub
      @gentlemenscholarsclub  Год назад

      In terms of having both, probably. They have different styles altogether. Regarding the cuffs, I would say ping S&M on Instagram to ask how much extra there is in there after checking what the listed sleeve length is vs. how much you need.

    Ulster is one of the four provinces of Ireland. There are 9 counties in Ulster, 6 of which are Northern Ireland, which is still part of the UK. The remaining 3 counties of Ulster are across the border in Ireland. 👍

    i was looking into getting the Chocolate Brown Donegal - Polo Coat but is it full canvas?

    • @gentlemenscholarsclub
      @gentlemenscholarsclub  Год назад

      Most places don't talk about canvas on overcoats. Even Private White and Permanent Style or other more luxury level makers don't mention it. I would venture that it's significant for suit jackets and sport coats but not so much for overcoats. TBH, I hadn't thought about it before.

      Quality of make for PW is higher as should be expected with the higher price point.

    Confused.....you said Liverano is bespoke but it comes with a small collar....well it's bespoke which means that you can make the collar any size you would like. It costs $US 10,000 minimum and takes a year or two to make with four fittings and pictures simply do it no justice. You have to see it in person to appreciate its beauty, which is true of most bespoke clothing. The Liverano ulster is completely sewn by hand in Florence, Italy and the lapels are hand-padded and sewn in a way that makes the collar pop-up in a unique way. It's made to not only last forever, but to look good forever. The reason I am responding is because I hear people say, all the time, that they'd much rather have a $500 ($350 on sale) Spier ulster coat over a Liverano one and given the choice would pick S&M. I don't believe it for one second, including this guy's intimation that he prefers the Spier over Liverano. That's cognitive dissonance at its finest! As nice as S&M clothing is, it loses its luster after a few years and that's exactly what you expect from a sub $500 coat made in a Chinese factory and sold at a great value, notwithstanding it's highly likely made in a Chinese labor camp and certainly by some people who are severely underpaid (which partly explains its low price).

    • @gentlemenscholarsclub
      @gentlemenscholarsclub  Год назад +2

      Oh, I'd buy Liverano if I had $10K to spend on it, and I don't doubt that the quality is higher. It's on my dream list, and I'm not disparaging it. I'm just saying I prefer a larger collar and that Liverano has a smaller collar, so a different take on the Ulster. Most bespoke tailors will not alter their house style that much, as it throws off the overall aesthetic, and they won't compromise that (understandably). I've asked and have been clearly told the limits. With that said, should you want to buy me a Liverano to experience the process and product, I will graciously accept!

      @@gentlemenscholarsclub touché hahahah I love you content. Antonio and Taka will fight you to the death if you ask for something they don't believe is aesthetically pleasing. But at the end of the day, they are businessmen and for $10Gs, or much more in many cases, they’ll make your collar 33 feet for the right price. . I had a standoff w Antonio b.c he didn’t think a fabric color I liked complimented my skin tone. This is for a $7,500 jacket. He picked one for me and that was that. I called the next day to get the one I wanted and he made it for me.
