- Woolton Village in South Liverpool, a brief history, places to visit and take photos of. The Beatles connection with the meeting place of Lennon and McCartney and the grave of Eleanor Rigby. Strawberry Field and John Lennon's childhood home.
Delighful. I grew up in Liverpool but knew nothing of this exquisite village. Thank you.
I grew up in Speke but I went to Childwall Valley High school. The 81 bus took us through Hunts Cross, Woolton and d Gateacre Brow. We’d change buses at The Five Ways, then on to school. I left England in 1968 for the USA. Thank you for posting this video. It’s always good to see Liverpool 😊
My nan lives on Chelwood Avenue. The field belonging to that school was opposite her house, with cherry blossoms all the way down the road. It's a housing estate now...a reasonably nice one.
I went in the opposite direction to school...the 79 to the fiveways, then the 81 to SFX.
I lived in Woolton around 1960. The old joke used to be 'How do you get a budgie to Speak' The answer was 'Put him on the 81 bus' 😂 Such a stupid joke but we laughed our hearts out at it!
Another excellent video Jeff...full of interesting information..👍🏻...as small kids (5yr olds)....we would walk all the way from Liffey street (my aunties) led by my older cousin Margaret 11rs old )..to woolton woods..just to play and have some butties and lemonade...then walk all the way back!...great memories for me ...I don't think an 11yr old girl would be allowed to venture that far with all her cousins these days...thanks for sparking the memory Jeff....👍🏻
That's a long long walk, and at 5 it would seem a lot longer.
I was born in Woolton in 1963 went to st.marys , my sister who is 9 years my senior said they used to keep cows on a field in vale road where the flats are, they used to walk down to the village to James's dairy every morning, sadly it is not the same place that I knew, on quarry Street , the blacksmiths and newstead farmI remember it well it had horses in a field it was so beautiful, and I remember the bottom of vale road as they were building hillview gardens and Kenilworth way, and I did Sunday papers for many years in the 1970s for Taylors on quarry Street no wonder my Back is broken , I have very happy memories of my childhood in woolton, everyday was like a new adventure 💖💖💖
Whatever gets You thru the night lover
Lovely video, I worked as a nanny 1980's in Quarry Street, I walked up Beaconfields 100 times, walked passed the gates of Strawberry field 100 times , aw nice memories
I was in u.k and living in Liverpool working at Saint Paul s eye hospital old hall Street. In1970 .ASA opthalmic nurse and l met all the se Beautiful people as l was fresh from Sri Lanka couldn't u ndestand the language bcse of the acccet.now lam back in Sri Lanka.after38years user this video and am so happy .
Great video, thanks for posting. Always loved Woolton and went to Reynolds Park all the time. Left in 1964 but still have affection and great memories for all the places shown in the video. Now living in Montreal.
Whenever I feel homesick , I check out videos of Liverpool, but to come across Woolton, where I walked upon almost every street, hung out as a teen , met my first bo in coach and horses, could go on forever..just fills my heart up to see it all. However my family still live there..Which is something..Thanks mate. For putting this up.Home Will always be woolton..God bless..🎸🌞💚
As a child I lived in Woolton for about six years with my family. I don’t remember the name of the road we lived on but our house backed onto the sandstone quarry. I enjoyed my life in Woolton and remember learning to swim in the public baths. I don’t know if they are still operating as I emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1966 with my family. After living in Woolton we moved to a house in Halewood, and I attended Gateacre Comprehensive School from 11 onwards. I remember enjoying Woolton Wood and I used to fish in Calderstone Park, which was just a bike ride away. Thank you for taking and uploading the video as I enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
The baths is no longer open, I'm unsure of what it's future is.
I made a video about Gateacre Comprehensive, its more about the walk to the school than the school itself. I don't know if you've watched that one. Anyway, thanks for your comment.
Many thanks for putting this video together. It's lovely to see these shots of Woolton to where in the mid 1960s my family moved from Grassendale, Liverpool. And it was especially nice to see the shots of Reynolds Park where in 1976 my wife and I had our wedding breakfast. Oh and also good to see The White Horse pub where my pals and I downed many a pint. I seem to remember that the other pub in Woolton was called the Elephant. I attended SFX school (before and after their move to Woolton) and at lunch time used to cycle down Beaconsfield Road at break neck speed past Strawberry Fields, across Menlove Avenue, down Yewtree Road then turn left to go up to Allerton Golf Club where my pals and I would have our sandwiches.
The Elephant is still there, it's almost opposite the White Horse. It's not really prominant in the video. Thanks for the comment.
Lovely to see this video. My sister lives in Mason St where the Woolton picture house is. I now live in Norfolk but spent many happy hours in the Woolton picture house growing up in Liverpool . So fantastic it’s still there. Completely different experience to going to one of the huge multiplex cinemas. Woolton still has the feel of a small village despite now being part of a huge city. Lots of lovely shops and cafes to visit. I’m looking forward to the end of lockdowns so I’m able to visit my sister again.
The Picture House had problems during the lockdowns of last year, they did a crowd fund appeal and raised more than they asked for. I hope they survive as it's a unique cinema.
@@Jeff1photo I hear it's going to reopen now
Hello, not the same as it used to be, still nice, still a village feel to it, but to many bars, cafes, Calvert's long gone, baths closed, picture house still open! Stay Safe.
@ Stormy Tempest - unfortunately nothing stays the same but it's still a lovely place. I love bring there when I visit my sister. Love walking over to Camp Hill and Woolton woods and up to Reynolds Park. The rose garden there is beautiful. Really hoping to be able to travel up in May for my dad's 90th. Fingers crossed. You stay safe too.😊
Great video. I grew up living in Woolton, seeing all my old haunts in Woolton woods, Camp Hill, Church road, Reynolds park and St Peter's brought back such fond memories. My parents still live in Woolton Village, it is such lovely place to live and grow up in!
Beautiful evocative video. In 1975 I lived on Church Road in the house right next to St. Peter's Church and the graveyard with Eleanor Rigby's tombstone. I remember having dinner at the Elephant Pub and Restaurant which I catch a glimpse of in the vid. There was a disco-club "The Squires" for young people to party. Later on I moved to a block called Millman Court on Vale Road which sort of leads from Menlove Ave to Woolton village.
Hi, yes I remember Squires now you mention it, thanks for your comment, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.
Great to see, brings back good memories...great to see not much has changed ❤
Thanks. Enjoyed the tour
Very nice your video! 👏🏽
What a pleasant trip around Woolton Village. I remember taking 'my girlfriend' to the Woolton Picture House, and I still have the little Orange Film guide booklet from 1972. We are now retired !!
Any relation to Roy Sam from Garston ?
@@mistyblue1057 Afraid not, sorry.
I grew up in Woolton and three generations of my family lived in 40 Quarry Street. My great grandfather had the greengrocer shop called Leek’s greengrocer and fruitiers from that address.
Great video. Brings back many memories.I used to live in Gateacre (Little Woolton) just down the hill and i spent a lot of time around Woolton.
Me too. My parents still live there.
I was there years ago. Very nice place.
My early years was lee park ,going to woolton picture house on Saturdays in the 60s with my brothers and sisters great memories
great to see this , I did all my drinking in the pubs here and had my 18th in the Woolton Hall
Great video..you shared your life with us...thank you! A life so different than life i've lived in the great orchards, vineyards, fruit trees of the great Central San Joaquin Valley in California. And the 7240 feet above sea level ranch we have in central México. The beautiful state of Jalisco..land of beautiful mountains...warn beaches of Puerto Vallarta. The only legal place in the world where the fields and fields of agave grow to produce Tequila! Blessings!
You did a very nice job of this video. Much appreciated!
Great nostalgic trip...I grew up in Gateacre, all my friends lived in or around Woolton. Spent many days on Camp Hill, then, when we were a little older, drinking in The Baby Elephant...until we were old enough to drink legally, then we all went across the road to The White Horse.
I did most of my under age drinking in The Coach and Horses, now it's a children's nursery.
@@Jeff1photo Haha, the irony...Yes, we sometimes drank in 'The Coach' too, it had a bit of a 'Spit n Sawdust' reputation though so, being cowards, we stuck to 'The Baby'. We sometimes jumped on the 78 bus up towards Childwall to 'The Halfway House' or occasionally we'd visit 'The Falstaff' in Gateacre....Great times, Woolton has such a magical character.
@@thebouncinghearts I got banned from the Bear and Staff on Gateacre Brow when i was 15!
@@motormouser I think us 3 must know each other🤣. I'm a Baby Elephant veteran and a Bear & Staff regular. I used to put on 'Ebeneezer Goode' and 'Tetris' on their jukebox when I was 16; a few weeks later it was mysteriously 'removed' never to return.
Thank you took me back seeing the picture house xx
The latest video Woolton Quiz 3 has the Grapes and the Picture House on the beginning, and I've given you a mention.
Thank you for posting this video.
Brilliant thank you very much for the Video
My Aunty Mary used to live in Mount St, I spent a lot of time up in Woolton. This video brought back so many memories Jeff. Some memories I have are, Ina Lewis Sweet shop, Byroms pet supplies over the road, it was owned by Malcolm and his sister, I think the chippy was next door. There was an Irwins grocers, the Doctors round past the pond, Dr Humphries Dr Warne. I remember the Dairy had a herd of cows, that used to be milked twice a day. Do you remember C. S. Morphet butchers where Sainsburys entrance is now, and Gambles butchers up by the baths.
Yes all gone now. You could actually shop in the village back then. The model shop which sold airfix models, the record shop on the corner of Quarry Street too. We kept our doctors from Smithdown Road, they did house visits in the afternoons, travelling all that way.
Me mum and her brother kenny William's grew up there they lived in vale road. It's a beautiful part of liverpool I remember playing there in the seventies it hasn't changed
I remember the clock towards the end of the video, wasn't it known as the Cuckoo clock? I spent a lot of time in Woolton as a kid. I used to walk there from Hunts Cross, to go swimming at Woolton Baths, then buy some chips (3d!) from the chippy and then walk home through the woods and Camphill. There's a massive crater in the woods with two gravestones dedicated to pet dogs I believe? I miss my home town.
i been there after i was born and them i left with my mum and dad and my brother jack in november 1995
I well remember the sunken car park in the centre of the village...opposite the Elephant pub ....owned by Simon Rimmer..the TV chef...
Camp hill brings back some painful memories for me, I used to play for a team in the Zingari league and we'd train there every week. They made us run up and down the grassy hill carrying someone else on our backs. No wonder we couldn't win fck all on Saturdays lol. Great video.
That's one steep hill! Sounds like torture.
Really nice video ❗
Nice video. Must’ve been filmed in lockdown as it’s like a ghost town!😆 not normally that quiet and deserted!
Ah no it's pre-lockdown, the video has been on RUclips since September 2019. Filmed on a couple of Sunday mornings and one or two Mondays during August and early Sept 2019. Pleased you like it. Thanks.
@@Jeff1photo best time of the year to film late August and early September. I'm sure you will know this yourself but the light is so much brighter than any other time of the year. I tell everybody about "September Skies" and then they see what I mean.
Good to see my home area in these lockdown times; keep it coming!
Woolton is beautiful alot of flowers residents front doors, I love that Liverpool is the home of the Beatles my brother Peter favorite group and mine is Cathy Dennis, I truly want to visit bold st I truly like that area is so beautiful the parks so much history .
This was lovely my school was next to the Marie curry home wartergate best school ever loved my school days I was in the cross country team an we used to run up camp hil An through woolton park I was a lot fitter back then xx

Deutsche Dog sorry do yr research the Marie curry was an still is a hospice for people with cancer and my school was next door I should know as I did go to school there if anyone's a blurt it's you
Nice that 👍
I loved this video, do you have any more on other parts of Liverpool ?
Thank you .👍🏻🇬🇧
What amazed me the most is not much traffic on the road.
Lovin' your Video Jeff...anymore comin' ?! - :)
I was working on one about Hunts Cross and a couple of others, and if we're ever let out I'll get them finished. Pleased you like them.
The Elenor Rigby grave is not the same Elenor Rigby Paul McCartney wrote about!...according to Macca himself! - he says he already had Elenor, and got the Rigby name while one day walking past a Hat-Shop in Bristol named 'Rigbys'...he's on You-Tube' somewhere telling the story of how he came up with the name.
I've seen it. and he's also on Wikipedia as an audio recording saying the same, but we'd put a lot of taxi drivers out of business if we told everyone.
It is!
@@stormytempest3907 - DO YOUR RESEARCH!
Well it seems an awful big coincidence, then.
@@MRROBBIEWATTS I think McCartney also admitted it could well have been subconsciously referencing the rigby tombstone conflated with having met actress Eleanor Bron whilst filming Help!.
Whatever happened to Clarke's Gardens. I remember going there in about 1976 and seeing fish and maybe a smelly fox (or it could have been a dog.)
Clarkes Gardens is in Allerton and makes up part of the grounds that William Roscoe's old house had. Allerton Hall.
I used to sit on a bus from city via Woolton to Halewood with my late-Mother. Pls could u do a vid on Halewood, the old 'wimpy estate' st ives way? Thanks so much, bring lot of emotion and sentiments.
I've been filming around that area, St Nicks and the Eagle and Child pub. I need to do some more and I'll add in St Ives Way. Be on RUclips during April.
@@Jeff1photo I've liked n subscribed you. My parents purchased their end plot of land and watched their house being built (number 16, St Ives Way). That was l8-70s.Then in 1984 my parents sold this home and we moved to east London, my late-Mother was crying her eyes out! I attended Halewood Village primary school and left at age 5. So even though I left Liverpool aged 5-yrs old but I still have memories and wot a gr8 city to be born in.
Hi, I have finally put the Halewood video on RUclips. Your old house and road is on the end of the video after the fade out to black. It's starts around 48 minutes in, so you don't have to watch the whole video.
@@Jeff1photo It was absolutely lovely! I did shed a few tears, happier times when all my family lived in that place. The whole video was awesome and the research and spoken history you offered was incredible. Thank you so much!
I live in Woolton:D
The sundial in Reynolds park is not the original that was stolen in the 60s
i was up there today visiting
Years since ive been there. What happened to the cuckoo clock made of flowers. Oh and Google says Reservoir rd is the highest point in Liverpool
Cuckoo Clock is still there as a circle of flowers, it hasn't worked for years though.
I was an apprentice Blacksmith/Farrier in Blackmores, Pit Place (I think) off Quarry Street ~1968. Pity nothing is left of the smithy now. Anyone have pic?
Just did a Google search and there is a Paul Blackmore who is a Liverpool farrier and still working. He has a twitter and Facebook I believe.
Reservoir road is the highest point in Liverpool and Merseyside. You missed a trick not mentioning that. Nice video though. Thanks.
He also missed the the point that the RAF command and control centre for the Merseyside Air Defence was in Reynolds Park on the the otherside of the wall from Resevoir Road. It was demolished in the 80's. We managed to get into this building when we were children. It had a blast wall in front of the entrance and inside it was full of cubicles. Each had a chair and an old pair of headphones hanging on a hook.
Great video . So we knocked the Cavern down Strawberry Fields …imagine this in the USA lol it’s like knocking Elvis,s mansion down
Yep that's a very concise history of past events.
Have you ever drank at the Derby arms pup in woolton
