- There are so many ways in which Paradox games occupy my time, but in this video, I note the main 7 reasons why these games have captivated me this hard. Whether we're talking Crusader Kings 2 or CK3, EU4, Victoria 3, HOI4 or Stellaris, there are many aspects all of these games have in common, and it is the essence of Paradox games I've tried to distill in this video.

Funny to talk about the multiplayer aspect while we all know paradox players don't have friends
I was going to ask my girlfriend about this phenomenon, but then I remembered... oh wait, I'm a Paradox player.

I baffle myself that I can stare at a map for hundreds of hours and somehow not get bored. It’s almost like reading a novel for me as I imagine my fleets engaging the enemy and armies marching. On the screen these are just icons moving about but I am captivated. I am totally invested. My wife thinks I’m nuts as all she sees is me looking at Europe with random boxes popping up😂

Well I can confirm watching someone else playing paradox games gets boring and or frustrating quickly. You have to do it yourself to really enjoy it

nothing compares to the moment at work when someone asks me what've you been doing yesterday and I response "I was conquering Europe"
Or when you start talking to a colleague, and another colleague overhears in pure shock: "...so yeah, I had to marry off my 16 year old daughter to a 70 year old man so that she can make him a child and inherit. Unfortunately, she made two boys so I had to kill one off"
We here are all historians at heart!
I salute you all!
No other company produces such a time sink of games. I don't even play multiplayer or mods simply enjoy achievement hunting.

theres no feeling that comes close to starting out as a small green dot on the map and after hours of gameplay being a giant green blob that has devoured half the map :D
I am a relatively new paradox player. In my childhood I mostly played total war and the tropico series (and age of empires). Over ten years ago I once tried out hearts of iron 3 but I didn't like the game and somehow never picked up a paradox game again. Then when crusader kings 3 released I tried it out and from there on I became a passionate paradox player. Ck 3 was the first paradox game I got into and from there on I expanded into other titles, especially imperator rome conquered my heart rapidly.

Me being introduced by the RUclips algorithm about Paradox Games since 2017 is forever life-changing for a teenager like me.
You're on spot man. I've been playing PDX games for the last 16 years, Stellaris and HoI4 is still "new releases" for me and when I overhear people saying they want Stellaris 2, I am like "wth, but Stellaris 1 just relea- ooohhh... wait..."
I remain ever so baffled as to how you seem to have experienced the same gaming progression as me. From Final Fantasy X being a most beloved game that claimed a part of our hearts (thanks for that 4-hour analysis by the way), to Rome and Medieval Total War seeing us grow beyond the Age of Empires and Civilization life, to Crusader Kings II introducing us to Paradox Interactive... Not only do I find myself agreeing with your takes on all these games (and more), I feel I've met a twin of sorts who has played the same games in the same way for the same reasons.
Thank you for putting into words your thoughts on these collections of games.
That's unironically wild, especially because I also feel like (and this is a realization I made after starting RUclips) so few people actually genre-hop or are innately genre-agnostic. I quite literally play games from every genre as long as I love that game, I don't only play strategy games for example, and I can tell you don't either! A good game is a good game, regardless of the genre! Though admittedly, as my early 30s carry on, PvP is about the only thing I've truly dropped from my life. Co-op is infinitely more satisfying. But that's still not specific to a genre! Co-op shooters can be just as fun as co-op RTS or co-op grand strategy.

I have a hard time recognising voices so I assumed it must have been different people.
But yeah I have a very similar gaming experience too.
My first game was probably Age of Empires I. Also Caesar III.
FFX was the game I spammed when I was in middle school.
And I used to play a lot of Rome TW in between.
Then I discovered EUIV in 2014 and got addicted to Paradox games since then.
I even restrained myself on purpose so I wouldn't waste my whole life playing them. Still I'm nearing 10k hours playtime.
Paradox games are the kind of games about which I tell myself "I'll just play a quick 2-3 hour session in the morning".
Then 15 hours later "oh shit it's already midnight and I didn't even eat".

Tbh I first saw and got hooked into eu4 when I saw the Thor ragnarok eu4 videos. Tho I only bought them after becoming a history enthusiast.
I really wanted to like Total War, and have purchased more titles of them than I should, but strategically, grand strategy level, they all seemed very shallow compared to Paradox.
they are indeed. My journey from Total War to Paradox was mind-blowing because of this. Sure I missed my grand battles, but man, when the campaign got me that hooked, it didn't truly feel like I needed them, you know?
@@AndysParadox I think there was a mod that did this, but imagine a game with Total War's battles but Paradox's events, diplomacy and administrative stuff. Would be a banger to play.

What really brings me back to paradox games is decisions and focus trees. It gives you a goal and an intresting playthrough
CK2 was my first paradox game also and it changed my view on what was possible in terms of depth loved it then love it now

There is only one thing that is missing from Paradox games. The ability to import saves to subsequent game. Sure, there are mods that do it, but still...
It would've been nice if it was done natively, but the mods are great ways to do it all the same :)
And maybe real time battles
And realistic economies.
First time a played a Paradox game was in 2017, Total War in 2010, Civilization and Age of Empires in 2007 or 2008. I will say I enjoy Paradox and Total War more than the other two.

Nah, I would introduce them to Paradox games early and turn my kids into people who I could reliably call on for multiplayer games

I feel so old, my first paradox game was Svea Rike.
I started with EU1 - it looks like you beat me to win Paradox fan #0001 🙂 TBH The Paradox magic has worn off a lot by now. EU2 was probably the one I played most. Then HOI2, also CK2. Seems that the #2 are the best. Stellaris 2 maybe?

Details, details, and more details... You can never fully understand the game, there are always a million mechanics.
Hehehehehe... I have refunded Crusader Kings immediately when I noticed that it will consume too much of my time :D Still have EUIV but uninstalled. Same reasons. Similar story with TW series actually, would love to return to Shogun 2 and finally play Empire, but sadly I do not have time for that...
If only I was wasting my time on the game instead the 20 minutes loading screen...
I got CK2 with Mount and Blade for $5 five years ago... I thought the cover art dude with the shield looked cool so I said meh I like strategy, let's try it.
Bought EU4 and HOI4 the next couple months and now have close to 1000 hours in each of them. The ability to play almost any nation on earth and tell your own stories, is just second to none.
Yeah there is lots of DLC that isn't always great. But look at the hours played by many in the community. The value for the dollar is still absolutely crazy.

Paradox is charging 25€ for their latest Stellaris DLC. Their extreme greed paired with absolutely abysmal quality lately lost them a customer.
Same, their high prices and bad products really make me hate thems
