Lights are just resistors and as I understand it they are just terminated to the opposite polarity of the source {in this case a battery} So if it is blowing when you touch the light be careful you are not touching the light probe to the frame {which is at opposite polarity} that would cause a short , then with your bulb frame also make sure that the bulb frame is not touching any part of the frame {when I say frame I mean the body of the VW} I’ve had problems with polarity also recently I know how inelegant and frustrating it can be, but if you break the problems down into their separate parts of polarity, that is to say +12 0 -12 {in this case} I think you can solve it. In the case of the VW we have ‘+12’ and a potential difference which is at the frame of the body. One way to be sure is attach some insulated wire to the ‘12+’ part of the bulb frame being careful it only touches the ‘12+’ and run that out clear of the body then test again?
When testing with the test light you have power to the bars and down inside, then the fuse, wiring and the headlight switch are all good. Test the bulb, and if the bulb lights up its good. So the only thing that it can be is the bulb is not touching the bar down inside, are the bulb is not grounding on the case. It sounds like the bulb is not grounding to the metal housing.
Looks like the test light touched the side which would short it out and blow the fuse. Try using a little sand paper on the bottom of bulb holder tab where the center of bulb touches the tab. Insert the bulb with the switch off, the turn the switch on.
Yes...yes! I had to clean all my contact points...brass...for the lights on my car...even then half of them didn’t work. And I had to fidget around with the tab bending it this way or that to adjust so it would make contact. And yes I also concur about the test light.
This is fuse one, I have power on the wire to bulb holder. Them I put the bulb in and it shows power. Then put test light and shows power then pops the fuse.
@@Volkswagenplanet take that whole bulb assembly out and replace with the left side assembly. Just to check the assembly isn't grounding out. You can always put it back later.(I know they are for each side of the car but just for your own learning this will help) I don't know if you get what my previous comment meant..If you take out all fuses and then all wiring in the vehicle isn't live..THEN start introducing a fuse at a time and introduce power to certain parts and only then will you find the short if that is really the problem. In my humble opinion mate.
John agree with walk away and come back to it another day. Not sure if it will help you but I always clean the contacts with either fine wet sand paper, or a No.2 pencil eraser..Make sure both my ground and hot connections are clean, I have and dirty ground connection chase me around for days. My son see the melt down coming when i have a vw issue beating me like a drum.. Dad walk away come back and try tommarrow .. Everytime i do this the next day i find a solution to my problem no stress and wonder why I was having such a hard time the day before.. Sometimes if there are other needs, i work on somethig else on the car so i do not feel like i wasted the day, and then the next day go back at it. There must be other things on the car you can do, may not be as important, but they will need to be done..clean the windows, gather up other parts see if they need cleaned..
Never heard of an eraser. This is why I ask questions. I've come to far to quit now. If it becomes to much just walk away. It was a huge lift to hear it crank and nothing catch on fire.
I agree always somthing else to work om at this point in the game. The only problem with that is I always start somthing and get distracted. Then go back and try and remember where I left off. This was how I started my channel. I would take myself at the end of the day to remember what I did when I went back.
Looks to me like the test light itself touched the positive and the ground within the light socket at the same time..... Ya touched the sides just like playing the game " operation"..... mount it back on the fender properly , replace the bulb and it should be fine.... All the loose dangling wires by the fuse box , on the gas tank , and under the ashtray are momentarily shorting out on eachother or the body.... in a google picture of the double decker fuse boxes there is a second relay present ( probably a high/low beam relay or something to that effect????)
Wrap the fuse in tinfoil....it won’t blow then.ha,ha,ha no,no,no just kidding don’t do that. You grounded your light holder with your test light and blew the fuse. Remove the lights....the metal parts....that hold the bulbs....there will be 5 all told. ( license plate light) Go inside where it’s warm, sit down and have a 12 volt battery charger handy, on the 1 or 2 amP setting. This is going to be your power supply. You will need small fidgety tools. Screwdriver, needle nose, sandpaper and new or know good clean bulbs. Clean and adjust the contacts on each socket...insert the bulb, test. It lights up? Go to the next bulb holder...it didn’t? Inspect and study why it doesn’t....clean and adjust it until it does...presto no more blow fuses. Take that whole mess out to your car, attach the wires, and screw them down....cause they are fixed. Turn on your light switch ,watch in amazement how all five light up. Disco!
You are correct. There were also bare wires touching the body. It was one big mess. I gave up and rewired the entire system. Thank you for watching and commenting. Stay safe
Your absolutely correct. Would be a bad idea to get rhe grounds taken care of as well. There were a lot if issues with this bug. Thank you fir watching and commenting. Take care, stay safe.

Isolate the problem by taking EVERY FUSE OUT.
