I think people should be able to name characters as they see fit, and no threats are justified, but this does cut deep for many people and I hope I've conveyed that effectively. I believe it was a mistake and the greatest lesson here is forgiveness :) What are your thoughts on this Shiga Murata controversy? @ me below!
    ...
    THE FOLLOWING IS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC
For those wondering about the Nanjing Massacre Museum:
You enter through a giant room with a reflection pool in the middle. The number 300,000 is reflected in the water which causes you to look up where it is illuminated on the ceiling. Often times numbers, when used in statistics and don’t capture the true tragedy. You notice the stone walls are 15 feet high and covered from top to bottom with Chinese characters, 6 inch by 2 inch blocks, each a name of a victim. There are so many names that the average Chinese person can find someone with their name who died in Nanjing. I myself have a Chinese name (夏文轩) given to me by my teacher, very obscure, yet I found someone with it, further personalizing each victim to everyone who learns of this atrocity.
You’re led into a room full of binders, again stacked on shelves towering over you. Each binder contains pictures, registries, certificates, and anything else relating to the people that perished. Only a few are open for observation, but It might as well be a library with the sheer amount of records.
After this, one is able to proceed into a series of exhibits and has the freedom to move to different ones. One learns the true meaning of “Rape” in the “Rape of Nanjing”, where women (and children) were kept in hospitals as sex slaves for the Japanese army. Accounts from comfort women being raped 40-50 times per day were common. Records detailing how Japanese soldiers would eventually lose interest because the women were “not tight” enough or not “pleasurable enough” due to the repeated violence. One soldier even noted how he became disgusted when it turned out a woman’s vagina had festered due to disease and neglect.
One particular exhibit showed a board game soldiers would play to pass the time. It was marked with different spaces, each relating to an aspect of the conquest of Nanjing. Dice, cards, and pieces all moved around the game based on kills or prisoners taken. A dark monopoly if you will… just a game
Another exhibit showed a photo of a few Japanese soldiers holding a banner and a trophy next to a few dead bodies. It was an award ceremony to a soldier who killed the most civilians in one day, with just over 170 confirmed deaths. Samurai swords were used in place of rifles since it was a more “sporting” way to play this contest… just a game…
This is only some of what is shown in the museum, and only some of the history that took place and claimed the lives and spirits of some 300,000 people in Nanjing - in just six weeks.

My only issue are the people wanting a " proper apology". Horikoshi already had a lot on his plate with the main manga, 2 side mangas, and the anime. Now he has shueisha on his ass, 2 countries pissed off sending a bunch of threats on twitter and faxing his office. Then they expect him to give some "proper apology" asap, can they give him by the time of the next chapter to get stuff in order.
Also what do they even want as an apology, a simple sorry because some dont think thats enough, a bunch of sketches, a fucking essay. They have no clue what they want just saying" proper apology".

He's literally potrayed as a sick man and a villain who will pay for his crimes soon . It's rather an acknowledgment of the fact that the real doctor did those vile things and we can see a version of him facing justice . Has anybody ever said we should not potray Hitler in any movie even as a villain ? No . We enjoy watching him die .

*Here’s a section of an article about Unit 731 that relates to Maruta*
Unit 731 started out as a research unit, investigating the effects of disease and injury on the fighting ability of an armed force. One element of the unit, called “Maruta,” took this research a little further than the usual bounds of medical ethics by observing injuries and the course of disease on living patients.
At first, these patients were volunteers from the ranks of the army, but as the experiments reached the limits of what could be non-invasively observed, and as the supply of volunteers dried up, the unit turned to the study of Chinese POWs and civilian prisoners.
And as the concept of consent went out the window, so did the restraint of the researchers. It was around this time that Unit 731 began referring to confined research subjects as “logs,” or “Maruta” in Japanese.
Study methods in these experiments were barbaric.
Vivisection, for example, is the practice of mutilating human bodies, without anesthesia, to study the operations of living systems. Thousands of men and women, mostly Chinese communist prisoners as well as children and elderly farmers, were infected with diseases such as cholera and the plague, then had their organs removed for examination before they died in order to study the effects of the disease without the decomposition that occurs after death.
Subjects had limbs amputated and reattached to the other side of the body, while others had their limbs crushed or frozen, or had the circulation cut off to observe the progress of gangrene.
Finally, when a prisoner’s body was all used up, they would typically be shot or killed by lethal injection, though some may have been buried alive. None of the Chinese, Mongolian, Korean, or Russian prisoners assigned to Unit 731 survived their confinement.

These are my thoughts on the matter. I believe that Horokoshi chose the name intentional to bring parallel to those horrible events that happened. He's not a ww2 apologist, that seems like a extreme stretch in thought, I believe his intentions were try to being light to a event that the Japanese government try's to shy away from by making a non redeemable/non sympathetic villain that's doing the similar things in his story. Though I believe he chose the name on purpose I don't think he had any ill will by doing so and is truly sorry for offending people. I completely understand why people are offended/hurt by the name, especially those in Korea and China who which have sore spot about event (that phrase is also a understatement) and to my knowledge the Japanese government hasn't really apologized for, but he apologized and has changed the name. There's nothing more he can do and those who are demanding him to apologize again aren't going to be satisfied if he does. I recommend those who can't move forward from this situation is to just drop the series and I hope those are able to move on. The part of the situation that pisses me off are the "fans" that think it's ok to send death threats and/or racist remarks to Horokoshi. Those people are no better than what their claiming Horokoshi to be. Not just to Horokoshi but whoever does this to anyone, that type of behavior is unacceptable and those people should feel ashamed for partaking in those events. Those my thoughts on the situation.

    Now i think i understand
By naming the bad guy 'maruta', the name of the victims of those awful experiments, it's like basically naming a fictional dictator who massacred countless people of a certain race inside poison gass filled rooms 'Jew' or 'Anne Frank'.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard 4 года назад +6

Unfortunately it's far sillier than that. Maruta (丸太) is a normal Japanese word, known by every Japanese person, that means 'tree log'. The word is also written with the characters for 'round' (丸) and 'chubby' (太), which is probably the meaning Horikoshi intended when he named the villain (who is small and obese).
Hardly any Japanese person knows the word was used by some scientists to denote subjects of human experiments 70 years ago. This is not a 'sensitive word' by any means; it's literally equivalent to naming a character "meat sack" and someone figuring out that the term was used by some random evil military leader during WW2 to denote prisoners of war. It's literal insanity.

    • @VidiaReePhoenix
      @VidiaReePhoenix 4 года назад +12

@@VVayVVard It's not just some "random" evil act: they were war crimes on the level of Joseph Mengele, arguably worse. The Japanese used the term "Maruta" as a code. For example, "How many logs were cut today?" was code for "How many people did we kill today?"
Don't pretend that Horikoshi named him Maruta just because it can be interpreted as fat. It's clear he was making a connection between Unit 731, an evil unit that conducted human experimentation, with his character, an evil scientist that conducted human experimentation.
Also, the fact most Japanese people do not know the connotations of the word is part of a bigger problem in their society. Namely, that their leaders deny Unit 731 happened, refuse to apologize, and don't teach it in schools. Imagine if Germany denied the Holocaust happening, removed it from their history books, and refused to apologize for it?

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard 4 года назад +2

@@VidiaReePhoenix Do you know what terms soldiers in your country have used to refer to their enemies in the past? Or do you know any terms that have been used by murderers in your country to denote their victims?
Probably not. Probably, you don't even care. If so, and if you think Japanese people _should_ care, you're a hypocrite and you know it.
The word was only used by a handful of random Japanese scientists, and them choosing the word 'log' is 100% pure randomness. There's no objective relevance linking the term to what they were doing. Put that in a history book and any intelligent student is going to forget it in an instant; literally no one cares what the scientists called the test subjects. Not you, not me, not your average Japanese student. That knowledge is 100% a waste of brain capacity, and I'm sure most history teachers wouldn't teach it in class since the information is so useless. You pretend like you care, but you're also going to forget about it within a year or two. I'd wager >99.9999% of Chinese people don't know about it either.
Also, Maruta is a given name in Japan. It literally means 'round' / 'chubby' and it's considered to be a cute name for male children. Again, Horikoshi probably had no clue about the word 'log' being used by 731 scientists to denote their test subjects. Nor does he have a reason to, either.
And about the "bigger problem in their society": you don't seem to understand how history works. First rule in history: never trust what the winning side says about the losing side. They're absolutely going to lie to make themselves look better. Here's a nice thought experiment: what if Japanese soldiers had behaved in an exemplary manner throughout the war, helping people the best they can in all the areas they colonized? We know this is true in the case of Taiwan, for example. Now, do you think the CCP would agree to portray the Japanese, who invaded the country and represent American presence in Asia in the modern day, in a historically accurate manner in this case?
The answer is no. In fact, they'd actively try to forge evidence of atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in China, to delegitimize the invasion in any way they can. And we KNOW the CCP has a strong tendency to rewrite history in a way that it deems convenient: e.g. this is what they did with the infamous student protests in the 80s, and what they've done with Hong Kong in the past year. On the other hand, there's no record of the Japanese government ever having tried to bend historical facts. Now, which one do you think is more likely to be telling the truth: the Japanese government or the Chinese government?
Both Germany and Japan held war crime-related trials after WW2. Former officials of Nazi Germany confessed to having contributed to the holocaust, in addition to there being tons of relatively solid evidence to corroborate their testimonies. Of course, testimonies can be forced (via blackmail) and evidence can be forged, but still, the facts seem to add up, which is why we believe the holocaust did actually happen. On the other hand, in Japan, they found *zero evidence* of the war crimes written in Chinese history books. And we both know the CCP has a tendency to rewrite history to advance nationalist causes. At this point, it seems more likely that Japanese invaders behaved much like they did in Taiwan: they took control of the land, but did their best to maintain public order. There were no massacres nor unnecessary torture. Probably some soldiers got out of line and went berserk, but this is something you see in all armies, be it the US army, the Iraq army, the Russian army, the Chinese army, the Korean army... all armies have soldiers who individually decide to take advantage of the war and engage in criminal activity.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard 4 года назад +2

@@VidiaReePhoenix Also note that in the Tokyo trials, a Japanese military official testified that much of the murder and pillaging in Nanking was actually conducted by locals, who supposedly took advantage of the war to loot homes, and that Japanese soldiers were actively trying to stop this type of looting. Of course, there's no evidence either way; however, if this was indeed the case, do you think the CCP would admit it, or do you believe it would try to place the blame on the Japanese army instead?
We both know the answer is the latter. The CCP is extremely nationalist, and would never, EVER portray actions by Chinese nationals in a negative light, nor those by Japanese soldiers in a positive light, when it comes to WW2.
Similarly, I can easily see how Russian, American or Chinese military scientists may have used 731 as a convenient scapegoat for their own experiments, forging evidence to escape prosecution. Try to research the subject, and you'll quickly find that there's no proof either way.
So again, you can believe what you will, but personally I'd take all claims regarding WW2 by the CCP with a grain of salt.

    The fact
・Horikoshi named the Doctor 志賀 丸太(shiga maruta).
・志賀(shiga) is not created by Horikoshi but Japanese family name, these are about 34,900ppl in Japan.
・丸太(maruta) is commonly used as word reminiscent of trees in Japan.
・Maruta is a word that refers to the victim of unit 731.
・Many modern Japanese don’t know 丸太 indicate the victim of unit 731.
・It harts Korean and Chinese to named the villain who conducts human experiments 丸太(maruta).
・Horikoshi got severe criticism and said he will change the name
・The episode using 丸太(maruta) is not officially published in Korean and Chinese yet
    The Interpretation
・志賀(shiga) comes from 志賀 潔(shiga kiyoshi) found Shigella and Shigella is one of bacterias which be used in unit 731.
・Horikoshi named the doctor 丸太 to
    associate the victim.
・Horikoshi blasphemed and tried to provoke the victim to use 丸太.
・丸太 refers 丸太ん棒(maruta n bou) means unless in Japanese just like 木偶の坊(deku no bou) in the case of Deku.
    ・丸太 comes from 木(trees) it linked 木偶(Deku) 死柄木(Shigaraki) and 八木(Yagi).
・志賀 丸太 refers 死柄木. 木(trees) is ki in Japanese. So “SHIGA(志賀) ra KI(丸太)”.
    ・志 comes from 志村(Shimura).
・達磨(daruma) is semordnilap. It becomes the doctor’s real name. だるま→まるた.
・志賀丸太 refers 氏賀Y太 who Japanese manga artist for ADULT. We use ◯ instead of * just like f***. ◯ is MARU in Japanese and 氏 can be read SHI. 氏賀Y太(ujiga waita)→氏賀◯太(shiga maruta)
These are just opinions about naming I found on Twitter.
Please don't force your "interpretation" on others and don’t assume that your "interpretation" is correct.
    Only Horikoshi knows the true.
By the way 志賀 丸太 is clever name because we have many interpretations IF WE DON’T CARE ABOUT HISTORY tho.

That’s cruel, but probably there are millions of victims in China back to that time. People have the rights to comment on history, no matter it’s horrible or not, but artistically recreation from my perspective, should at least respect those most foundational human rights. Not really. 'Maruta' (丸太) in Japanese means tree log, i.e. 木头 in Chinese. Most Japanese people, including Horikoshi, have no idea it was used to refer to experimental subjects in WW2. To them it just means 'log'.
And the reason the villain was named that is because he's round (丸) and obese (太っている means 'chubby' in Japanese). Again, nothing to do with WW2.

But, even after they did, SOME Korean and Chinese fans are still mad about it and want another apology from Horikoshi and are starting to send him death threats and uploading videos of them throwing the manga volumes in trash. While them being upset is very understandable, harassing Horikoshi and telling him to kill himself is taking too far. He apologised and said he would change the name immediately so I don't know what they want anymore. They are even harassing other Koreans and Chinese fans who are still supporting the series. You don't wanna support the manga anymore? It's okay, you have the right to not do so but harassing Horikoshi and sending death threats is not okay at All.

Changing the name is like getting rid of the awareness in a way. And now since its became problematic, I doubt anyone will ever mention it and awareness would shrink.

Many Japanese youth and adults were never taught the brutal extent of their military's and Government's actions and crimes during the war, rather, they teach that Japan was a victim as well due to the bombings, which I argue are justified, as they saved Japan from impending US invasion, which could only have ended in a complete erasing of Japan. And if not by the Americans....then by the rapidly advancing Soviets.
Germany has basically made it illegal to forget the horror's they've inflicted on Europe, while Japan claims victim status. Japan will apology to different nations almost yearly, but seem to refuse to admit they did anything wrong.
They refuse to admit to the massacres and rapes inflicted upon their conquered territories. The forced death marches of PoWs. Forcing civilians to commit suicide in sight of advancing US troops. And...as referenced by this controversy...the inhumane experimentations on living people, in what is often referred to as the "Holocaust of the East", by such groups as Unit 731 and Unit 100.
    Vivisections.
    Bio-weapon testing.
    STD and infections testing.
Simply committing rapes, or conducting rape experiments.
Field testing bio weapons on Chinese towns and villages, with remnants of these diseases and weapons still causing trouble today.

My god people need to research before commenting, "Maruta" is the derogatory code name given to VICTIMS of human experimentation performed by the Japanese, the pronunciation was even specifically pointed out when the manga was first released. The doctor's last name is also the name of a virus used in the experiments. Horikoshi is someone who takes pride in his character names so it can be hard to believe that the name he choice for this evil doctor who DOES HUMAN EXPERIMENTS was simply a coincidence. By naming the evil doctor (the one who inflicts harm) the name given to the victims, who will no doubt be beat by the righteous Japanese heroes, Horikoshi reverses the roles and paints a bad image for the word "Maruta" while they are the ones who suffered. Keeping the name would've made people only relate "Maruta" to some evil doctor defeated in MHA and leaving many oblivious to the historical meaning behind the word. Judging from how many people already think that "Maruta" is somehow a fitting name things certainly don't look too bright now and the situation will only go downhill from here.
Osamu Tezuka (who was considered as the godfather of manga) stated on page 240 of his work "How to Draw Manga" three things that no mangaka should ever do:
    1. kid about the victims of war and disaster
    2. Show contempt for a particular profession
    3. Sneer at a certain nation, people, and public
Whatever Horikoshi's true intentions were, his actions had consequences. While its true that some Chinese and Korean fans went to farm with their hate but I hope this can help people see where they are coming from.

    • @VVayVVard
      @VVayVVard 4 года назад

Yeah, you obviously haven't done your research either. Maruta(丸太)is a very common Japanese word that means 'tree log'. It has a hidden meaning: it's written with the characters for 'round' (丸) and 'chubby' (太). This is why the short-statured, obese villain was named that way. Literally nothing to do with WW2.
It was used by a small group of scientists doing random human experiments 70 years ago to refer to their subjects. Similarly, history has had its fair share of immoral people using all kinds of random words to denote their victims. No one knows which exact words have been used this way. What if some random group of people had used "Thanos"? Or "Joker"? Or "Darth" or "Vader"? Should these names be changed ASAP, since now we know that they're actually making fun of victims of violent crime? No, of course not. No sane person would draw that conclusion.
This is especially true when dealing with an innocuous word like "log". Almost no Japanese person knows about the WW2 context. Nor should they, since it's a normal word and this isn't a particularly important point to stress in a history lesson about human experimentation in the past.
And as for "Shiga" referring to a virus... yeah, I'd love to see your reference for that. Shiga (志賀) is a basic Japanese name. I googled "shiga virus" and surprise suprise, I couldn't find anything. So I'd be interested to hear which particular virus you think this refers to.

Therefore if this character represents that period of Japanese history and Horikoshi gives that representation under the guise of a character that must be condemned, I think it is him saying that these actions in the past must be condemned and punished. I believe fiction can be an outlet to speaking of issues that we normally can't because of social stigmas nowadays and if he says such things under the guise of one that seems apologetic and even critical to that period in his own history, then i don't see why this backlash is justified.

I understand China’s feelings on the matter. It calls back to atrocities that Japan still hasn’t publicly apologized for. That said, I personally think a lot of the anger towards Horikoshi as a person is misguided. He clearly is using this event to show Ujiko’s depth of depravity. The man set up orphanages across the country just so he could always have children (possible his own grandchild as well) to experiment on. He’s the right hand man of the Symbol of Evil in this series. We’re supposed to view his actions as vile. Plus it also keeps in line with Horikoshi’s use of trees/wood as a symbol for quirkless people. It’s natural for creators to use past atrocities to influence their stories. We see it from Star Wars to Harry Potter. It would be one thing if Horikoshi used this as a callous way of minimalizing or lionizing the issue, but that isn’t the case. I know that China can be very sensitive to these issues and bans many things that they find to offend the country, so my opinion really doesn’t matter.

As I understand there is still a lot of tension between China and Japan to this day and that is one of the reasons why. Is MHA seen as a bad series now because of this or have things cooled down? Thanks for your time by the way.

The most unforgivable thing is that the victim's stigma has become the name of the perpetrator. This kind of naming will obscure our history and make others remember that when it comes to 'maruta', this is a key character that runs through in a popular animation. Over time like this, it will dilute our history. Another important point is that this is a story about "heroes". It is inappropriate to name such an important character with such a name.

Yeah, the Japanese did some horrible things during WW2 but that doesn't erase what the Chinese Communist Party does to its citizens everyday.

Except that Horikoshi didn’t apologize. You see that’s the problem. Saying ‘I take your words seriously’ is the farthest stretch from an apology even though Japanese is a subtle language. In fact this expression is often used to go around an apology and that’s why people are upset with Hori’s crappy attitude. But I agree that death threats are too far though just the tiniest bit portion of people would go there.

What Horikoshi did right now touches the bottomline to the people in China and Korea. It shows him and many young people in Japan that they don’t know and don’t respect the history that Japan did to to many Asian countries during the WW2, that’s why many Korean and Chinese are so angry about this. We are talking about Anti-human war crimes here people.

I for one am glad Hirokoshi's use of the name for the doctor sparked this controversy, because I would have NEVER known about the war crimes perpetrated by unit 731 during ww2. I think my hero academia can use this to address issues regarding dehumanising and inhumane experimentation and force their government to actually take responsibility for these crimes. I would definitely respect the anime more than I already do if it not only serves as entertainment, but also addresses important matter as this. I'm African, and I can sincerely say reading this history hurts more (i would never compare).

Unit 731 is largely forgotten about to the west as it did not affect us but, little is known about unit 731 because most of the records are held by the US because after the war we took in the top scientist in exchange for pardoning them so the soviets wouldn't get them, and the project lead shiro ishi had the whole team make a vow of silence to never talk about it and they took their notes with them.
Allot of the guys from unit 731 rose to prominence in Japanese medicial fields and allot of them got japanese military awards aswell.

What does Hirokoshi expect. To this day, Unit 731 is still a painful and touchy subject to Chinese.
In the book The Devil's Gluttony by Japanese author Seiichi Morimura, he recorded one experiment of Unit 731 involved a 'Maruta' been tied to a chair and placed in a high temperature room. The 'Maruta' then began to sweat heavily under the high temperature, but the sweat would dry before it drops to the floor. Within 15 hrs, the moisture in the 'Maruta' completely evaporated. The member of Unit 731 then measured the dry weight of the 'Maruta' and calculated the body water percentage of that 'Maruta' to be 78%.
There is no prove that experiment happened (according to the author, the book was based on his interview of four former Unit 731 member, who refused to disclose their identity). If that's true, that 'Maruta' been baked alive would be a young child, because only children have body water percentage higher than 70%. It meant a young child had suffered horribly in the last moment of their life. It meant the only record we have of that young child is that awful experiment that refer to them as 'Maruta' - a log. No name, no age, not even their gender.
Read above and tell me you want a villian named 'Maruta'.

  • @pku9977
    @pku9977 4 года назад +5

A mistake? Look down below and then you know that’s BS! This author purposely humiliate victims of WW2. And clearly he did some homework, cuz not only no people are using Maruta ad a name, but also last name is one of the virus name being used on victims.
For people who think Chinese is overreacting, let me explain what really happened. Maruta is NOT ONE victim’s name. It’s a humiliating nickname used by Japanese to call ALL VICTIMS OF HUMAN BODY EXPERIMENTS.
The last name Shiga is one of the virus they used on victims.
丸太 is normally pronounced as Ganta, the author purposely emphasized and marked here he wants it as Maruta.
We all know the author cares character’s name. So this villain has humiliating nickname for victims as first name, has Shiga virus as last name, and what he does is doing human body experiments. Suddenly, all is just a coincidence?
Some people are still trying to convince others that we always use Nazi as villain name, so it’s fine. But now they are using VICTIMS’ name as a villain. It’s fcking totally different! How about using N world as a villain name and what he does is killing and humiliating black people? And the director is even a white person?
Basically 731 unit is a Japanese troop which had done a lot of anti human experiments in China. Victims include Chinese, Korean and Russian and others. It’s a recorded historical fact.

I think what people don’t understand is that it’s not about naming the villain a controversial name, but teaching the right history lesson. Imagine this horrific event of conduction of human experiment during ww2 is remembered by kids as an anime villain instead of what it actually is. As a Chinese I felt very offended and at the same time I understand that there is no ill intent, just a mistake.

This is really sad. It's purely a fictional work and a creator is being harassed over a name he's given to a character. He already stated that the name had no intentions of hurting anyone. Bakugo's hero name was once "Ground Zero" and the first thing that comes to my mind was the world trade center. For those who don't know, after the tragic event of 9/11, people started calling what's left of the world trade center "ground zero". For a guy who's quirk is explosion and is also named ground zero, it may be a coincidence but no one ever pointed that out. Ground Zero has a bad history within its name but it shouldn't affect a creator's choice.

Well, some MHA Chinese fans was blown away by the news and found it difficult to accept. You're right that, as a western viewer, I can't even properly fathom the depth of the suffering of those affected by this. To me it appears to be a clever reference from atrocities that were committed many decades ago. I say clever because I don't believe Horikoshi was trying to harm or offend anyone with this and because you could easily draw parallels between the experiments carried out and the character of the doctor. And I feel that this reference touched upon and served to reinforce the doctor's character as a depraved and truly evil person. And as a writer I find that demanding to change something just because you don't like it goes against the very nature of art and expression; to censor pieces of history that we don't necessarily like to look at or remember. That being said I am sorry for those Asian viewers who are affected by this and hope they feel better after the change is made.

And your point is..? Is it that the name was a mistake? Perhaps that because the name references the victims that attaching it to the mad scientist is supposed to suddenly Horikoshi a WWII apologist? As others have stated prior those who are quirkless in the world of MHA tend to have wood-based names. So if Horikoshi wanted to make reference to the doctor being quirkless and the parallels between his character and the horrific experiments conducted then the name accomplishes that purpose.
