“Causes Public Outrage With Their Communities” Former Policeman On Increasing Stop And Search

  • Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by former police officer Norman Brennan to discuss the Tories call for more stop and searches on the street.
It comes after policing minister Chris Philp urged forces to increase the use of stop and searches as part of a “robust approach” to tackle knife crime.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Mr Philp described stop and search as a “vital tool” which is “not used nearly often enough”.
The use of stop and search was reduced after then home secretary Theresa May curbed powers amid fears black people were disproportionately targeted, restrictions which have been eased.
Norman says: “The Met Police are not going to be carrying out stop and searches like Chris Philp wants, there are dozens awaiting discipline hearings because they have done exactly what he is asking.”

I'm a Civil Servant in a pretty senior role. I started my career as a lawyer, and worked for a decade in criminal investigation working with (and leading) the Police. I do not trust them an inch. If you think a stop and search is a calm, pleasant, unobtrusive experience then you are wrong. Watch the many videos of 'auditors' being searched. Police constantly over reach, are not accountable, have a supercilious attitude, and use smoke and mirror coercion to over step their powers. So many body cams go missing from stop and searches that lead to claims against the Police, and this is no coincidence. There is no accountability: an appalling example will realistically lead to a session where a Sarge tells them what they should have done. Compensation is given out frequently where there is third party video, but that is absorbed by insurance and so.... the tax payer. Lastly, by all accounts, from former Police, to their own assessment (where there is a percentage of illiterate Bobbies), to my own account, the Police today are poor examples. Lacking skills, knowledge character and intelligence (they lowered the tests to encompass lower IQs). If I am innocent, I want to involvement in my life with Police and should be able to not have interactions like this.

@TheTruthInnit I do not assume. I go by what I see. What do you see more of; people demanding anything and everything be done to stop the violence, or hordes of race baiters, screaming about supposed racism for police using stop and search? I simply cannot comprehend putting your poor little hurty feelings before the lives of others. Let's be real. These folk who complain about stop and search don't want to get caught with something or their ego prevents them from following rules/authority. That is why they kick off so often. They think it's below them to allow an officer to do his job and this is taught behaviour. If they hate being stopped, maybe the decent people should be more vocal in their condemnation of the ones that are the reason for the necessity of searches, instead of glamorising criminal behaviour.

Why has there not been a prison building programme? Prisons need to act as deterrents, managed with strict regimes and should not be places to which one would ever wish to return. Sentences should also be of appropriate duration, again from the deterrent perspective.; there is a need to eradicate the rate of recidivism, when people are in and out of prison many times.

The underlying issues behind youth violence need to be addressed. The government has pathetically failed in this regard, communities, parents and role models are hampered by overbearing government dictates and suffocating mandates, there are zero incentives, only festering division and distrust.

In all these discussions, they never mention a word about the on-going murder enquiries and the clea-up rates for such cases. Perhaps stop and search is really a cost-saving measure as its cheaper than vigorous murder enquiries.

Sadiq Khan will do nothing, He has said that living with terror attacks is 'part and parcel of living in a big city',so knife crimes are a very low priority for him.
Of course he travels with bodyguards in an armoured Range Rover, so I doubt he'll ever see anyone carrying a knife.

What should really outrage people is that, as the police and the CPS abandon the people, it is also illegal for the people to carry ANYTHING that they might reasonably use to defend themselves. No pepper spray, no stun guns, nothing more injurious than a strongly worded letter is permitted for the law abiding citizen. And you better bet that, if a normal Brit gets caught with pepper spray, they would be the one to actually gets prosecuted!

I have carried since then, and I always will. Hopefully Coppers will understand, and if not, then I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

I do not commit crimes, and so do not want interactions with the Police like this. This should be the right of innocent people. I want a 'articulable suspicion' like the US. The figures clearly show that the majority of these intrusive, privacy/impinging events are on innocent people.

Instant fines then let people on their way, might even help officers get some rapport with members of difficult communities, threat of arrest causes too many big escalations n too much time consumed for officers, the money raised should go direct to paying for more officers for the area, more fines more officers n as things improved police presence could gradually reduce again if the system could be flexible n able to hire n fire accordingly imo.

I think mandatory 5 yr sentences inconsistently enforced is impractical, n its not working, i think a fining system could work better, with jail sentences for repeated offences n also if the police have good reason to believe the person in question could be a domino effect person, the kind of thug who is causing fear for everyone else n is a time bomb imo.
