    Mushu is a great example:
-he voices how Mulan doesn't wanna be seen naked by the guys
-acts as a surrogate mother on the trip by cooking breakfast
-reminds Mulan about the honor she must uphold, much like what her subconscious would be doing

Like how jesters were able to critique the king.

Love this point, exactly! Using humour as a tool to critique power gave them greater agency and it’s so interesting to consider the dynamic

Not all comic relief characters are intertwined with the plot. Not all of them even meet the main characters. Typically they are just some small animal making the same journey. They can just be a comic relief. And the comedy could be just that they mess up. Hit each other, talk funny etc. What is true for one movie is not true for every movie.

@@TheGrindelwald Valid points! This essay actually taps into the traditional ideas of comic relief characters that have been historically written as just funny. However, the difference between a comic relief character being just funny or being more complex is actually dependent on what the writers share. Whether we viewers are made aware of it or not, comic relief characters live complex lives beyond the plot of the story. Therefore, this presentation traces the evolution of how the comic relief character has been traditionally depicted as 2D to being more 3D today. Many films still depict comic relief characters as 2D because sometimes the plot does not require more. However, even in those instances, their presence pushes the plot forward. In general, the aim of this essay is to highlight the complexity of these characters on and off the screen and to suggest that they are not simply “comic relief” but actual complex beings. Have a great day!
