Ecuadorian American here and remember back when corea was in office and a lot of the streets were cleaned, there was an education system that was provided for free including uniforms..that has now changed a lot and it’s not as accessible to everyone anymore. One of Ecuador's biggest problems has always been education. I have been a college teacher for over thirty years and have had --maybe-- only five black students (and I am talking free public college). On the other hand, I've had many students from Indigenous families. 80% of Ecuadorians are mixed. I don't really think it's a race problem per se. But it's a class problem.

There’s racism everywhere in the world, however, as an Ecuadorian, for us it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, we’re all Ecuadorians period. The problems is that the poor class and rich is extremely marked. Middle class is disappearing, just like in the US is now with inflation right now. In Ecuador, We’re all mestizos, mulatos, blacks, cholos, indigenous etc. But in the big picture we’re all Ecuadorians and we’re proud of various ethnicities, music, culture,
Folklore etc. We embrace it all Cuy, Bolon, Ceviche Etc. Most Ecuadorians aren’t racist. Don’t put us all in one basket because of one bad apple. I appreciate your video. Thank you.

What you are discussing is common among all Latin American countries. Look at their television. It's all light-skinned latinos - in all countries - including Spanish television made in this U.S. And that reality is representative in the professions in general that you have seen. The entire culture is colonialistic in thinking. And that represented in how poor the funding for public education is and why private schooling is so important light-skinned latinos to perpetuate that reality. Great video and topic. Thanks.

I am not sure where you all live but I have lived in the Norte Sierra for 12 years after being programmed in the U.S. 68 years. In the U.S. we are programmed from birth and U.S. expats have a real hard time shaking that. When I came here, I chose to move into an all-Spanish neighborhood and that is where I have remained. I had two expat friends and I do not go to places that are frequented by expats. I am world-traveled and I did not move to Ecuador to hang out with North Americans. I moved on the day I left the U.S. My area is 72% indigenous. I am in the center of a popular tourist town. And I have several Venezuelan friends, one who just made a bed that I saw online and he made from a picture. We are seeing more and more immigrants from the U.S., which I am not crazy about. They cannot leave their ideas behind. I live in a town very much like I was born into in 1944. I do not want to see it change. I would like to see quotas put in place like were in effect in the 50s and 60s. My closest friend is a realtor and she is doing very well because of U.S. and Canadian immigrants. I only ask that she keeps them outside of our town. We have walled expat communities all over the suburbs along with our 42 indigenous farming communities. My neighbors, both Mestizos and Indigenous are perfect. Ecuadorians treat everyone with respect. For the first 3 years they are not sure you are staying but they treat you as a tourist so you come back. If you are still hanging around after 3 years, they will adopt you and you are now one of them. I feel at 79 that I would never have such an enjoyable life if I were still in the U.S. I need to comment on trash. I thought this was a nationwide thing but I guess not. We are responsible for keeping the sidewalk and street clean in front of our residences. So in the morning you will see people in front of their residence/stores washing the sidewalk and sweeping the street. We love our trashmen. It is sad to see what the U.S. has become but I now see Ecuador as my Country and I think President Noboa is a God send. It does not take long to realize that it is normal for all countries to make other countries look worse, but I have not seen Ecuador do that. My area of Ecuador is safe now and always has been. You can walk the streets day or night. I think President Noboa is capable of doing everything he says and giving Ecuadians a good, relaxed and safe life. Bottom line is that life is just so much more simple here. Guys, it is even easier in Northern Ecuador.

I have nothing against the expats in the country but, as the dream/plan I've had since I was a child, I hope to be able to settle among and, get to know local Ecuadorians..
I have this thing inside, that I have to know more and, I know that if anyone can tell me this "more", it's the indiginous people whom I feel, have a lot of the knowledge I feel have been stolen from myself and, from all the (Colonial) people I was born into.
By now I have 3 grandsons - all donor kids -, and. lart of my "mission" in life, is to find as much of our true History as I hopefully can, in order to share this with my grand children,...

Good conversation. I feel like both of you are very level headed, mature, smart guys. But, most of all both are good people. I could go with both of you and enjoy some fishing. Nuances are part of daily life, some are harder to adapt or even understand. You both understand that there are no perfect places on this planet. What's clear is that sometimes uncertainty brings this worry, that necessity to figure things out and therefore take the right desitions. Fears are also normal and part of life. I would say both of you are doing just fine and will continue to do just that. Relax a little, do that fishing trip you were both talking about. And consider what is the bottom line?

I agree with many of the opinions expressed about my country, but I would like to make an observation: you should stop referring to certain citizens as 'Afro-Ecuadorians'. They are not 'Afro-Ecuadorians'; they are simply Ecuadorians. They were born in Ecuador, not in Africa. They have not visited Africa, nor do they know it, and it's likely they never will. Although you might not realize it, this type of vocabulary contributes to further division among people. Personally, I am of mixed race with dark skin, and I would feel offended if I were called 'European Ecuadorian'. I am simply Ecuadorian, and that's all there is to say.

There's racism in Ecuador, not as blatant like in other countries, but ugly nevertheless. I've experienced it personally in Ecuador as a mestizo and as an immigrant in another country. I'm glad we're talking; my fellow ecuadorians and my fellow americans will someday understand that mistreating others is not good for anybody and hopefully we'll all rise up to treating everyone as human beings that we all are!

The issue of why they are amazed by. The irresponsible culture of some Ecuadorians is because we are a country with backwardness in age, we are what you were 60 or 80 years before, the United States and it has been evolving for 80 years and more, therefore it is as if when you come to Ecuador you go back in time, so do not try to change us, we will do it on our own as we evolve, We are a different race, a genetic race, it is what we are, to change abruptly would be a mistake of you. 😢

Is more about not having the resources for having a good education. Also the government jobs are mostly giving to those who know someone. Has not anything to do with race. I was born in Guayaquil and grew up with some who were Afro Ecuadorians. Went to the same school and we talk to each other. Perhaps is more within those who are European culture who consider all of those of us who are not white different. I remember watching news reports about Martin L. King JR history in my nation and never getting why the US did that to their people. When the TV mini series came out call roots all the people in Ecuador watch it and did not get why the greatests nation treated their people like that.. Yes we do have it but compare to the US is not the same. Not that any type of discriminations is OK. Ecuador was created by people from Spain who consider others less them humans. Is more about those who come to Ecuador from US or Europe and even Asia. I came to the US as 13 years and never got why people in the US saw African Americans less than humans. Still do not get it. Never will.

    • @LivingLovingAbroad

The RUclips challenges are real. I can make 100 videos that talk about the culture and show facts about Ecuador and they get abysmal views, I talk about the crisis and everyone watches 🥲
Oh man I hate that littering culture but the reality is that it’s something that comes from the previous generations. Everyone thinks they can do it because they’ve seen their parents/families doing it.

Yeah agreed 👍🏾 speaking we can speak truth and still have love for the country. Problems will never be resolved if they aren’t addressed to begin with.
The other problem is that many of the “positive” videos either don’t get views or there are people who will say it’s “too positive”. It’s difficult to strike a comfortable median on the subject.
