Hi friends, if you are new here, welcome to the sunflower family, I’m Holly Auna. We do a “Monday crochet” live stream every Monday at 5pm ct followed by a new video! On this channel, we do crochet, gardening, vlogs, renfaires, DIYs, thrifting, silly hair things and so much more! 🌻🧶👩🏻🌾🪴🐸
W8th the scrubby yarns, I usually add a cotton yarn and crochet with both yarns. Makes it easier to see your stitches and gives you more to hang onto when washing dishes.
@HollyAuna really well, i only use 100% cotton for dishcloths. Washes well in the washing machine too. I use just straight the sugar and cream for large dishcloths. I use the scrubby yarn in just some of my dishcloths and bottle washers.
@@HollyAuna I probably should have clarified, they do take ages to dry. But I find they have to be wrung out properly and then hung over something. I hang mine over the tap. I would never go back to a normal dishcloth, I live the texture you get with the crochet stitches.
I also use a second strand, I use a size 10 cotton thread, like you would use for a doily. Sometimes in the same color, sometimes a color that talks nicely to the scrubby yarn, helps define stitch placement and adds a nice color way.
@Miryeets_percyjackson_lover Hey there! I'm doing fine! I got a MRI and Heart Test done, so I'm waiting on the results for that. Fingers crossed, it'll be fine! Anything new with you? I've been working on some more plushies😊
Okay, suggestion here, crochet the first or second yarn with another absorbent yarn (together as one strand) so you get the scrubby texture but more able to see where you’re stitching… i use this method to add sparkle or other decorative factors to yarns to get the look of the more expensive decorative yarns for a fraction of the cost lol
There is a yarn I use for scrubbies by lion brand (Stitch Soak Scrub is the ‘type’ idk) and it’s almost like braided fishing line that you crochet with! It comes in small skeins and I think they are $3.45” where I live but I could be wrong! I think it works really well and the texture isn’t that bad.
That’s what I use too. Although I don’t crochet in the round, I alternate rows between SC and DC. And make a small rectangle. So it’s like a smaller dishcloth and because it’s flat it dries faster
Thank you for another wonderful video! I wanted to mention that I feel the same way about the Red Heart Scrubby Sparkle and the way it feels while you are crocheting with it - I ended up adding another scrubby yarn with it (so mixing the two together) and that helped a LOT. I pulled from both skeins at the same time - I hope that makes sense. I had to use a larger crochet hook but they turned out great, work great and my hands don't mind the feel of the yarns as much!
I make square washcloths that can be used in the kitchen or the bathroom. I don’t like the feel of any of the scrubby yarn so I just use 100% cotton yarn like the regular Sugar ‘n Cream or Hobby Lobby has an equivalent one in their brand. I’m not good at crocheting loose (I even use a size J hook and it looks like I use the recommended size hook). I’ve received many compliments on how easy it is to use on dishes as well as how nice they feel while washing your face.
Thank you for doing this test. I’ve used the Red Heart Scrubby yarn in a couple different variegated colors before to make exfoliating soap bags for the shower as well as dish scrubbies. I really liked them but wanted to know if there was something better out there (I’ve also used tulle, ok but too soft for my liking, and nylon netting. A BIG NO on the nylon netting, very painful to crochet with, at least for me). So I’m going to try the Scrubby Sparkle this time. I think that’s more of what I’m looking for. Thanks again!
I had bought the winning yarn for a planned scrubby project and am excited to use it! And of course I was rooting for it the whole time in hopes that I wouldn't regret the purchase lol
Oh man, I love the scrubby stripes yarn! I make bigger rectangle double thick scrubbies (similar to a sponge), so the color changing isn't an issue. I saw a comment to mix it with cotton yarn, so I'm going to try that as well!
Do you use a bigger hook than recommended for scrubby stripes!? I just really struggled seeing where to crochet lol! I'm so curious all your thoughts on it!
@HollyAuna I do go a bit bigger, mine suggests 5.5 and I use 6.5! I found it easier to use the type of hook that is... forgive me I don't know what it's called... the kind that has a deeper and flatter indent part of the hook? 🤦♀️ sorry I have no idea what it's called. Anyway I found that type easier for me. And it is hard to see but if I focus more on where I "know" the stitch "should" be and kind of trust that I'm putting the hook in the right place it glides easily and doesn't get caught and I always somehow end up in the right place. 😅 it did take some getting used to but I also really enjoy the texture but I could see if you don't like the feel of it on your hands it would make it more difficult!
Great video! I love scrubby stripes the best, simply because my grandma always uses that brand 🤣 Maybe I’ll try the sparkle one next time. I’ve never tried other brands LOL. Personally, I’ve KNITTED washcloths which makes it easier to see one’s stitches. I’d recommend using stitch markers for every other stitch when you’re getting started crochet-wise. Edit: Josh seems so nice haha
It is difficult to crochet with the fringy one but it makes some neat effects with great detail though. The green color ive used as grass on easter baskets with that redheart scrubby 😉
I love Scrubology from Hobby Lobby. I make 5-6 square Scrubbers from one skein. It takes some getting used too because it is a bit stiff, but they are awesome and last.
@HollyAuna you're welcome 😊. They are about 3" square. My mom uses one as a skin exfoliating scrubber. They have several color choices, around $4.99 each. Of course it's less when they have 30% off week
Hi, I make my own washing up cloths from 100 Cottenham yarn, it's thin but I just crochet more rows, it's good for dishes and worktops and machine washable and if it's stained can be bleached, I've never used shrubby yarns so I don't know if one is better than the other. ❤
My favorite scrubby yarn is Lion Brand Stitch Soak Scrub if you want another one to try! And I do puff stitches to add more texture but also to give more places for soap to sit.
Scrubby sparkle it is!! The test that did it for me was the counter test, surprisingly. Because for me yeah it dried fast and that's super important, but not holding SMELL afterwards; Because that implies there are oils left behind on the others, which will then TRANSFER to the next dish you wash. No thank you.
I like the idea of making scrubbies but no matter what kind it is, the texture of scrubbie yarns make my skin crawl. Also Tillie (or Tilly?)is very adorable and i wish my cat was half as well behaved while i was working, he's usually well behaved while i'm knitting/crocheting but if i have to frog something or i'm balling up some yarn and he's in the same room, thennhe takes that as an invitation to 'help'
The sugar and creme scrub one I made a wash cloth out of it and the way it worked up gave it two different textures but not like it should have been idk I have to mess with it some more I don't know if I like it
I actually never thought about making a scrubby with yarn but now I am definitely thinking about it!😅 Do you have any tips for making a granny square cardigan?
I wonder if it’s easier to knit a scrubby than crochet, since theoretically it should all stay on the needle as you work and that could make it easier to see where you’re supposed to go into. I only know how to knit a rectangle though so I’d have to make little squares
I used yarn that I made from plastic bags along with inexpensive cotton yarn. Worked great. Certainly alot cheaper than these skeins. And you could be more creative with color.

Just tried this and LOVE the results! Thank you for the suggestion!!
I've been wanting to make a scrubby for my Grandmother, but haven't known what yarn to use. This is very useful!😊
I really recommend scrubby sparkle ! It wasn’t super comfy to use but it didn’t bother me as much texture wise as the others!
@@HollyAuna I was thinking the same thing! I'll probably make some for her birthday.

I love how when Josh arrives he just sounds like a regal wizard when he said "And now it's my turn..."
Totally would love to see another video using scrubby yarn! Cause I know there are other versions of scrubby yarn that I think Holly would love!
I need to look into buying some more types for sure!!!
For the cotton ones, I’d make a bunch and only use it once before washing again. That what I do with my rags.
thats really smart!
