12:58 Piccolo wasn't teaching Goku how to drive, they were both learning out to drive because Chichi was angry at Goku for not getting groceries, or something. Icarus was there, too.
To clarify, it was because Chichi wanted Goku and Piccolo to do something "useful" for a change, she was tired of being the only household in the village without a car, having to cart groceries home on foot being chased by wild boars tand the like. She threatened both of them saying they would have to cook their own food if they didn't do so, which is rather funny considering that it was retconned at some point that Namekians survive only on water.

I love the friendship between Goku and Piccolo in this episode. You don't really get much of that in the abridged due to how the base interactions work in the show so here it's at its best.
Hey Kirby, remember when Bulma made a pass at Trunks? His initial reaction was warranted. Back To The Future style.
In Goku's defense with the whole "Androids" vs "Cyborgs" thing, Goku had encountered androids built by the Red Ribbon Army in the past in OG Dragon Ball. The ones he encountered were completely mechanical, AKA _actual_ androids and not humans enhanced by cybernetics like [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. The problem with this is that in Japanese, they're all part of the same model line with the same designation (Jinzoningen, lit. "Artificial Human" -which is still an inaccurate description of cyborgs but whatever)-
And one of them, Eighter, is basically a proto-(spoilers), being compassionate and kind.

I always found the "virus" thing dumb, not because Goku dies from it, but because Goku is, apparently, the *only* one who dies from it. This is an incurable virus; why does no one else catch it? It should be starting an epidemic. Honestly, DBZA fixed this bit by changing his death to heart disease. It makes way more sense why he's the only one affected.
So for years when Goku said the Yardrats fed him their sick, I always thought he meant their vomit. But no apparently it was the aliens themselves

Yamcha's, self deletion, was originally even darker. Puar, the little floating cat, is able to use magic to shapeshift. So they transformed into the ROPE Yamcha used. That's actual Abridged canon. We would have found out by Puar saying something along the lines of "Yamcha, can I stop being the rope now?".
It was already a *very* dark joke, but that line was where TFS collectively went "okay, that's a step too far, even for us".

I am British and I love that they used the tardis theme (from Doctor Who) for trunks time travel theme. Another doctor who theme is used in the history of trunks special and I love it

Funny thing is, Goku didn't even set out to defeat the Red Ribbon Army. He was just looking for the four star ball that belonged to his grandfather, and the army was also collecting them. He just ran theough them as collateral damage
using straight up Doctor Who music for the time traveler is just...fantastic.
Between the music, the TARDIS takeoff noise and the Dalek reference from the last episode by Freiza...it's enough to make you go, "Oh my Giddy Aunt."
(Been going through Classic Who. It's a toss up so far between Troughton, Pertwee and Tom Baker for favorite Classic Doctor.)
In canon, Goku escaped Namek in one of the Ginyu Force ships. The ship had been pre=programmed with Yardrat's coordinates, which is how it got Goku there, and the natives fixed up the ship instead of building a new one. So in the actual series the ship that crashes on Earth three hours after Trunks kills Freeza has the Ginyu Force insignia on it. His training on Yardrat (how he _actually_ learned to teleport, obviously) is also why he can use his Super Saiyan transformation at will. It's entirely off-screen.

Actually, Goku didn't even care about the red ribbon army. He was just looking for Dragonballs at the same time they were. And every time Goku ran into them, they'd try to kill him. So he'd fightm and win.
He never even blamed the entire Ted ribbon army. He just fought each faction of the army as they appeared to HIM. The only time Goku took a proactive step was when a father of a friend was killed.
I hope she remembered the "I'll be your mommy" line from last episode.

The Red Ribbon Army first appeared in Dragon Ball TOS, and yeah Goku was 12 - 13 years old when he beat them.
The voice actress for Chi-chi absolutely killed that enraged screaming.
One of my favorite parts of this rewatch was back on Namek when Vegeta screamed so loud that Trunks heard him in the future and Kyle, when you realized that Trunks actually appeared that early, your face was priceless.
This rewatch has been really fun for me

7:15 so its never actually confirmed *what* kills Goku in Trunks's timeline in the original. Its just called a "heart virus" or some such.
But I always had the headcanon that Goku picked it up on Yardrat ,the planet he crashed on in sort of a War of the Worlds type situation where the common germs and such that would be relatively harmless to the people on Yardrat were deadly to Goku, with his Saiyan biology being the thing that kept the symptoms at bay until, ironically, it was too late.
I mean, that would make a decent amount of sense to do it like that... Ergo, it simply could not be Canon. Lol.
Rare disease from the unknown race of beings that taught him the most op move in existence? Nah, unspecified virus on earth, probably. A big, vague, and convienent, probably. Also, only goku, because reasons.
P. S. As much as I'd love to believe they had intended or heavily implied that he got the disease from yardrat, by virtue of them being vague about it to this very day, it's just not likely they intended to make that tie-in... They definitely should have, tho.

1. Since Goku's body beat the virus once, using the medicine, it probably developed antibodies. Not to mention that future Bulma made the medicine to begin with, so I'd have no trouble believing the main timeline Bulma could reproduce it for the future
2. Like I said, since Saiyan biology is "unique" to say the least and built to let them survive various emviorments and keep fighting it makes sense any symptoms would be ignored
3. Vegeta *did* habe access to the resources and healthcare of King Cold's and Frieza's galactic empire. I would 100% buy that he was treated and/or vaccinated for all sorts of diseases Goku never had the chance, living on Earth.

Fun fact about the driving thing. Goku's instructor kept telling them not to race while Piccolo's instructor encouraged it. In the end they were given their licenses in exchange for paying for all the damages they'd caused and never going back to the DMV
It always make me feel so nice hearing Goku remember what trunks said happened to Yamcha and immediately telling him and reassuring him that he is his friend.
Cuz he blatantly forgot absolutely everything, and had to be corrected by Piccolo who actually pay attention, but yamcha's thing was the only thing Goku remembered and that shows how much he really values him

Don't know if this has been said in the comments already but Team Four Star have already stated that there won't be a season 4 with the Buu saga. They were completely burned out by the time they finished and felt that the ending of Season 3 was where it should've ended in the first place. It would be nice if they kept going but I don't see that happening.

So a couple episodes ago I said duck oopsd and now I can say why. All members of Bulmas family are named after underwear. Dr. Briefs, Bulma (short for bloomers), and now Trunks. By giving trunks name early there was a slight chance she could have put that together but it is a bit obscure so I didn’t wanna give it away if she hadn’t.
Oh I knew about the family naming I just knew there was no chance in the world she would figure it out
Also Bulma's mom named Panty, plus another two members but that's a story for another day

In Dragonball there was a minor antagonist who was a blatant reference to Arnold Schwarzanegger's T-800
And this arc, obviously, has some blatant parallels ( a savior from the future warning of an imminent machine apocalypse etc)

You know, I've seen the original and the abridged so many times, I keep forgetting how many revelations happen in this episode/episodes, depending on which you watch. Makes seeing first times reactions that much better, though, especially this one. Thanks for some extra hard laughs, Kirby. My personal favorite was the, "No, just let me enjoy it" when Highway to HFIL shows up. 😂

Goku was around 14-16 yrs old when he defeated the red ribbon army. Although you could argue that he never really finished the whole army lol
Here is something dark you might not have noticed. You know trunks story about what happened to the people in his timeline?
Well if you notice, this time Yamcha is the one reading the opening text.
The Red Ribbon Army wasn't just trying to take over the world, they had basically already won. Commander Red, leader of the army, was looking for the dragon balls. Not because he needed them to take over the world- again they had already won through conventional means, but rather so he could wish to be taller. Goku came into conflict with them because he was scouring the Earth for the four star ball. Why the four star ball specifically is a different story.
Also, Goku didn't just beat them. He fucking obliterated them. He spent an entire arc murdering mooks and lieutenants as he carved what was essentially a straight line from half-way around the world towards their main base/fortress/capital, which he destroyed in it's entirety. What made it worse was the fact he didn't even set out to do this nor did he ultimately care what happened to them, the moment he got his ball he just fucked off. It just so happened they were between him and what he wanted, and that's never a place you want to be.
Narratively, Goku is what's known as an 'outside context problem'
There is actually an extra footage on that episode that the creators scrapped in the OG upload it was revealed that Puar was the one who hangs Yamcha as per his request

There's a fun deleted scene where you find out that Puar transformed into the rope for Yamcha to hang himself with and you hear her asking if she can change back while Yamcha is hanging there

A fun little Easter egg regarding Trunks: any time you hear music when he is going back in time, doing something epic or even during "that moment" in his movie, it's all music from the series Doctor Who.

Goku was 13 when he fought against the Red Ribbon Army in Dragon Ball. He was 12 when he first met Bulma in episode 1 of Dragon Ball. Gohan in this episode is 6. It's actually crazy what Gohan accomplishes at such a young age. They even made a point of pointing out in the 2022 Dragon Ball Super movie that Gohan is now 24 years old, the same age his father was when he first became a Super Saiyan, and at that point in the story it's been almost 15 years since the end of the Cell arc. At the end of DBZA Gohan is only 10 years old (11 biologically).

Trunks is the biological son of Vegeta and Bulma from a parallel future. He when back in time to warn everyone about the attack of the Androids created by Dr. Gero of the disbanded Red Ribbon Army. The RRA were once known as the world's most powerful and evil army that desired world domination. But a 12-year-old Goku managed foil it's plans. Leaving the army in disarray. But Dr. Gero survived and carried on with his research for the seek revenge after over 15 years.
