Kalevi Kiviniemi plays Widor's "Toccata" at St.Ouen, Rouen, France

  • Happy Birthday, Cavaillé-Coll Organ at Saint-Ouen, Rouen, France! Kalevi Kiviniemi joins the party and plays Toccata (from 5th Symphony) by Charles-Marie Widor. On 17 April 1890, Widor himself played this piece as the last one in organ's inauguration recital.
    We decided to put this video online on the very same day to celebrate this magnifient organ, cathedral and its stained glass paintings, architecture and acoustics. Video was recorded in 2008 during the recording sessions of Kiviniemi's "Cavaille-Coll" -CD/Super Audio CD (OrganERA vol.14, FUGA-9282, www.fuga.fi). As far as we know, this is the only video of Widor's Toccata, from Saint-Ouen, that is recorded and filmed live in professional quality.
    Organ in Saint-Ouen is one of those rare instruments from a French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, that are remained untouched to our days, no alterations has been made. Many organ freaks also know this organ from its very loud reed stop, Bombarde 32, in Pedal, generating 16 Hz tones at its lowest. It sounds like a four-motor WWII bomber flies over! Still it blends perfectly with other stops. In video, there are some shots of Bombarde pipes behind the organ. They do not look special, but - listen...
    This video was specially made and prepared for RUclips. Audio was taken from high quality multi channel recording setup, not from video camera's built-in microphone. The better your computer's audio system and especially the speakers and the subwoofer are, the better is the sound. Video was filmed in full HD, please enjoy the better picture quality that it offers (720p, 1080p). In 720p and 1080p versions also audio quality is better.
    We really hope that you enjoy this special anniversary video!
    Video, audio, editing and description by Mika Koivusalo.

    32 foot Bombardes are usually laid flat due to lack of space in the organ chamber. Ive walked among them wearing ear defenders when the organ is being played at full power. The sheer power of the pedal bass nearly crushes your chest. Its awesome

    • @jamaicanpianistcomposer
      @jamaicanpianistcomposer 3 года назад +3

      @@geuros the physics of it would start to cancel out some of the harmonics so it wouldn't sound as good or monstrous as the 32 itself on one note that allow all the harmonics including the fifth in it to speak naturally interrupted.

    • @geuros
      @geuros 3 года назад +2

      @@jamaicanpianistcomposer interesting, I know that with 16' for example, it sounds like 32' imitation, there are organs where 32' stop is even done by activating 16'+10 2/3' stops (which is equivalent to playing fifth on 16' alone I guess), but it doesn't sound like true 32'. Hence I don't know what the effect would be on 32', if it would emulate 64' or rather cancel itself. But you're probably right as I'm definitely not the first one to think about it and it's just not being used, for a reason probably.

      dlwatib Well, they have been in use for well over 100 years, and it’s almost impossible to replace the keys with ivory because of the ethical issues surrounding the use of ivory, and one cannot replace the keys with plastic on such an important instrument.

      @@at0mcollision There was apparently also a water leak that damaged the keys but just barely missed the rest of the organ.

      I have a catalog from an organ building company in Hungary. For about 12500 euros you have one 32 foot rank with 44 pipes :-) But then you still need a blower, pressure regulator, a giant windchest, manual and all the connecting bits.. I would account for a few million euros for such an organ :D

      I just recently bought a Rodgers 599, classical organ for practice and personal enjoyment. The instrument has 3 manuals. And very good reeds, a Montre 32 and Contre Bombarde 32 { via midi } , with external speakers. The sound is, well, you can imagine what full organ is like. The best part is that I live on a farm so I can play the Organ as loud as I like, day or night!

      [Umbridge] Bombarda... Maxima! BOOM! [/Umbridge] This thing is madder than a box of frogs.. usually I go gaga over the German and Dutch organs, but this Frenchie is a monster! (Montre?)

    WIDOR lors de l' inauguration de ce grand 32 pieds, l'avait comparé à une oeuvre de Michel ange pour son touché et ses couleurs sonores merveilleuses , et c'est encore vrais merci Mr CAVAILLE COLL .

    Thanks for the detailed explanation regarding the organ's history and of this great performance by Kalevi Kiviniemi. - A pleasure to listen to such a wonderful performance, and also thanks to the great composer Charles-Marie Widor. A fine performance in filming and taking the sound, all well done, sheer delight!

    J’ai vu et entendu cet orgue pour la première fois au début des années soixante, lorsque mon père m’a emmené à la console un dimanche matin pour regarder l’organiste jouer à la messe chantée (vous pouviez faire ce genre de choses à l’époque). Je devais me familiariser avec l’orgue, l’entendait plusieurs fois au fil des ans avec son homologue dans la cathédrale à quelques rues plus loin. C’était un frisson alors, c’est encore toutes ces années plus tard d’entendre le même orgue et un maître de son jeu à la barre.
    I first saw and heard this organ in the 1960s when my father took me up to the console one Sunday morning to watch the organist playing at the Sung mass (you could do that sort of thing in those days). I was to become quite familiar with the organ hearing it many times over the years along with its counterpart in the Cathedral a few blocks away. It was a thrill then, it still is all these years later to hear the same organ and a master of his game at the helm.
