Glenn Greenwald Interviews Rep. Tulsi Gabbard About Foreign Policy and Her 2020 Campaign

  • Ever since Tulsi Gabbard was first elected to Congress in 2012, she has been assertively independent, heterodox, unpredictable, and polarizing. Viewed at first as a loyal Democrat and guaranteed future star by party leaders - due to her status as an Iraq War veteran, a telegenic and dynamic young woman, and the first Hindu and Samoan American ever elected to Congress - she has instead become a thorn in the side, and frequent critic, of those same party leaders that quickly anointed her as the future face of the party.
    Gabbard’s transformation from cherished party asset to party critic and outcast was rapid, and was due almost entirely to her insistence on following her own belief system and evolving ideology rather than party dogma and the long-standing rules for Washington advancement.
    Glenn Greenwald sat down with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to discuss a wide range of issues, including the reasons she is running for president, her views on Trump’s electoral appeal and what is necessary to defeat it, the rise of right-wing populism internationally, the Trump/Russia investigation, criticisms she has received regarding her views of Islam and certain repressive leaders, and her unique foreign policy viewpoints.
    This interview is intended to be the first in a series of in-depth interviews with influential and interesting U.S. political figures, including but not limited to 2020 presidential candidates, designed to enable deeper examinations than the standard cable or network news format permits.
    For more, read Glenn Greenwald's full article: theintercept.com/2019/05/09/w...

    • @clintholmes2061
      @clintholmes2061 5 лет назад +2

      @Kyle Duncan All of them. Or are you happy with everything? Cause I'm not. Do you want change? Vote for it. Every election matters, not just the presidential election and you are ignoring them all. There are also referendums. Vote on them otherwise you aren't fighting for what's right and that makes you part of the problem. All evil needs is for good men to do nothing. Well you are doing nothing.
      The establishment loves and counts on apathy like yours. They love it when you don't vote. Don't go down without a fight. Let the powers that be know what you want, and what you don't want, by voting.

    • @clintholmes2061
      @clintholmes2061 5 лет назад

      @Kyle Duncan Regarding, "But all of the problems are from people not voting?" I never said anything even close to this... and for good reason. Part of the problem =/= all of the problem.
      Regarding, "I mean more people voting isn't always the best answer." It is if we want more people to be represented by our government. And I want a government that is more representative of us all.
      Regarding, "Shouldn't we be advocating for an informed voting public not just more people voting." Obviously. And I obviously was not trying to give a comprehensive list of all the ways to make things better. I was giving but one way of many.
      Regarding, "But not voting is still a message. You are advocating for a protest vote." A protest vote is far superior because it demonstrates that you want to vote and are going to go vote. When you don't vote at all you may as well be the guy no longer looking for work who isn't counted by most unemployment measures ... as the powers that be stop giving a shit about you so much they won't even count you. Are you happy with the two party system? Cause I'm not. So do something about it. Find a third party candidate to support who does share your values if the major parties don't. Don't just stay home. Let people know what you do want, not just what you don't want.
      Regarding, "But theoretically if not one American voted in the Presidential election not even the candidates running. Who is in power?" I am not high. I revisit this the next time I'm tripping balls.
      Regarding, "You are telling me that the millions of people who voted for Obama twice and didn't vote for Hillary or at all weren't heard?" Not nearly as much as they could have been heard if they went out and voted for someone who wasn't a piece of shit. Over half the country didn't vote... when they could have all just gone out and voted for someone decent... and won.

    • @clintholmes2061

      @Kyle Duncan You are part of all problems =/= all of the problems are from people not voting?
      There is plenty of blame to go around. God damn. This is not rocket science.

    • @clintholmes2061
      @clintholmes2061 5 лет назад

      @Kyle Duncan Let me try to explain with a specific problem... money in politics. When you don't go out and vote for a candidate who isn't selling their soul to big money you are part of that problem being perpetuated because you aren't trying to do something about it with your vote. That doesn't mean that you are the only one to be blamed for it. Politicians selling their soul and the big money interests buying those politicians are far more to blame than you. But you are still part of that problem because you aren't voting and using that power you have to try and do something about it.

Most of the interview was good, but they both backed down from a critical question there, and then acted as if they didn't. I can only logically infer that she does support ongoing drone assassinations and indefinite detention/torture prisons for never-tried captives with the "collateral damage" of each and the endless nature of a war on the existence of a tactic (which amounts to high tech terrorism that motivates endless low tech terrorism in reaction, and hangs as a threat over the head of anyone who crosses the government of the U.S.). That's a pretty big issue to act like a standard U.S. politician on.

      Sanders did a great job on Fox, yes, but Gabbard has been digging deeper into even more "taboo" issues (i.e. US imperialism) which I greatly admire her for. I don't think Sanders is a hoax, he's just playing a dangerous political game, one which might blow up in his face (again). I hope it doesn't, and I hope he succeeds, but I wish he started a new party when he had the momentum (like NOW). Still I believe there's a chance, but only if Gabbard and Sanders team up. That is likely to happen since she was going to be his VP pick in 2016. The two are on the same team -- she stepped down as DNC vice-chair to back him. They also complement each other nicely (Sanders on domestic issues, Gabbard on foreign), she's just speaking more truth lately.

I would like to see him get a chance to set our domestic policy straight in regards to health care, education, and tax reform (backed up by a strong and intelligent woman with perhaps a better grasp of foriegn and military policy) while making way for the younger generation in 2024 and beyond. Let's play the long game.

      Imran Khan It would help if we weren’t propping Saudi Arabia up! The CIA was really quite “helpful” in spreading this extremist form of Islam around the region. Bin Ladin was on the CIA payroll. He was sent into Afghanistan to help train and prop up the Taliban to fight the Russians back in the 80’s. If you look at people living in Afghanistan prior to the Taliban take over, it was rather progressive with its treatment of women, etc.
      That quagmire that was created in a foreign country to “proxi” fight the USSR (as it was known back then as), helped to lead to the downfall and ending of the USSR communist block of countries. Russia today is nothing like the USSR was from WW2 until the 80’s.
      After that Afghanistan, CIA, Taliban build up of extremist Islamic teachings and such, we then see a conflict pop up in Yugoslavia/ Serbia. Then it was onto terrorist activities. And insert 9-11... which should, by now, have many people questioning the “official” narrative. There is a reason most of the hijackers of the planes were from Saudi Arabia. There was a reason they used Bin Ladin “bogey man” to terrorize the American People into supporting a “reorganization” of the Middle East.
      It’s incredibly interesting how well Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the USA all seem to work tangentially in the re-shaping of the Middle East and now parts of Africa and South America. Where there is a resource of some kind, like oil, the USA is all about asserting authority in order to control the corporate interests.
      Does anyone think it odd that President Obama and Trump both have bragged about the USA exporting more oil than importing oil? Why are we exporting any of it, if we clearly have enough oil in this country to run the country? The reality is that oil is not owned by us/ the Govt. The oil production is run by private corporations. They are the one’s who decide how the show is run. They are the one’s who set the prices. OPEC pretty much decides the market and the “spigot flow”. So, when Saddam Hussein decides to, at will, change the price of oil that he was selling, it created instability on the market and less profit for the corporations running OPEC. Obviously, that guy had to go. Similarly, the corporations and monied interests want to be able to control the profits from the national oil. Venezuela has more oil than Saudi Arabia. The corporate entities want private control over the Venezuelan people’s oil. So, the USA has placed sanctions, staged coups, and more recently, flooded the market, via means of Saudi Arabia overproducing barrels of oil. The barrel of oil is at a low rate in comparison to past years. But if you notice, every time the USA tries to insert the puppet regime in some manner, gas prices increase. When Venezuela doesn’t fall to the USA attempts, then the gas prices start falling down a bit.
      I think at the end of the day, it is past time we, as American citizens, push for and demand we remove ourselves from oil energy! The industry controls the worldwide over. We spend too much money on the Military Industrial Complex (policing the world) to insure that the petrol dollar remains in place and the USA remains the top empire. It’s old world thinking. It’s greed and corruption. And it’s killing this country!
      It’s really important that people start seeing the history of this country, know the players, and understand why they can’t have “nice things” like health care, clean water and air, housing, transportation, education... Its important to be able to identify what is occurring and why it’s occurring! Reacting to the latest “false flag” attempt, believing any of the Neo-con/liberal agenda in any manner, and understanding why we have a Trump following the same playbook as all other Presidents regarding regime change war, oil profit model.
      This country desperately needs a Tulsi Gabbard! I only worry for her safety if she does become much more viable as a presidential candidate. I very much support having Bernie and Tulsi in the race. It’s 2 strong voices for working for the people and the planet. And it would be hard to knock or bump off 2 candidates running on very similar platforms. And honestly, let’s face it, Bernie is pretty old. Anything could happen, and we have Tulsi. I’m very supportive of these two teaming up as a Pres/VP ticket. Her presence alone would keep Bernie from waffling on foreign policy issues. His Venezuela answers sucked... And he was called out on it. Having her close to him would keep him strong. A large source of money for domestic agendas is tied up in the MIC. Spending less there leaves more for programs Americans need.

      Imran Khan I don’t find her to be bigoted against Muslim people. She clearly defines the radical type of teaching that Saudi Arabia is exporting around the region (and after 20-30 yrs of CIA/ USA military interference) it’s not too hard to find recruits. I find it similar to me calling out any extremist religious organizations teachings. The extreme Christians that we have in this country have actually been more of a terrorist threat to this country than any outside influence.
      Also, remember, Tulsi is a Hindu. She keeps getting lobbed in as a “Modi Lover” from India because of her religious preference. She understands the smear of religious bigotry. So, I find people choosing to assert she’s a bigot to be ill informed. And I can understand why! Our media and the DNC and the PTB are scared of this woman who hits all their brackets on “identity politics”, and also has incredibly progressive domestic policy while also taking on the Military Industrial Complex. She’s a force to be reckoned with if people had the time to do research. I think the debate stage will really help people in America take a first look. I can imagine she will be googled heavily. And she only helps a Bernie sided conversation on the stage. It’s not so radical when there are a couple of people running that have taken stances that the American people support. She’s a Peace candidate! She’s and environmental champion (and has written legislation for an initiative off of oil.. it’s called the “Off Act” and AOC should be co-signing that). She was standing strong with Veterans at Standing Rock. She left the DNC to support Bernie. She really is like a Wonder Woman.

      I appreciate Glenn's work, but in this interview he was really rubbing me the wrong way a lot of the time - basically white-knighting for Muslim-extremism....
      Yes, US (and other Western) imperialism is *ALSO* bad, and is *also* a big part of what causes the problem, but this doesn't mean that the sort of Wahabbi Salafism that countries like Saudi Arabia so aggressively export aren't a huge problem that needs to be addressed head-on rather than pussy-footing around.
      He also drew a false equivalence by trying to compare Modi's government in India (which I'm by no means a fan of!) with Islamist extremism.
      Also Assad, for all his faults, *does not* oppress religious minorities, as Glenn suggested - quite the opposite actually! He *protects* Christians, Druze, Shia Muslims, and other religious minority groups. Same with Sisi's government in Egypt, which is far from perfect, but is certainly much better than the Muslim Brotherhood regime it replaced, which was complicit in the persecution of Egypt's Coptic Christian community!

      @@Bike_Lion In correcting people's impressions of Assad's Syria then Egypt you have tipped way way over to portray oppressive regimes which use wide spread torture and other authoritarian suppressive activities including using devastating military weapons on civilians in Assad's case as some sort of benign protector of minorities. They very much aren't.
      Assad Syria does oppress people you list, its not an explicit religious oppression (though it has elements of such) but a political oppression and has a protected class, a separate ethnoreligious group called the Alawites. (a sub sect of Shia). The Baathist state has long played off one group against another in Syria's complex multi ethnic/ religious makeup, and used fears of domination by the slight Sunni Arab majority to justify its oppression. That this strategy has continued into the civil war isn't a net positive.
      In fact the descent into religious tension and conflict in the middle east with the breakup of the Ottoman Empire (a multi ethnic and multi religious entity) can be directly tied to imposition by western powers of completely artificial national states constructed to be oppressive regimes from the get go in order to allow the easiest extraction of resources from and through the region for first France and Britain, then the US. Its why these 3 powers every time it looked like a democratic and liberal movement started directly interfered to overthrow these pluralist movements. Syria in 1949 and Iran in 1953 being the classic examples but there have been numerous since. Even the issue of Wahabbi Salafism export from Saudi Arabia only happened because Britain (after 1927) and later the US, backed Ibn Saud's (who from the get go was aligned with extreme Wahabi sect) efforts to take over the country so they could have cheap access to the country's oil wealth.
      Your narrative you have spun on this page is at best naively simplistic and grants positive agency to people like Assad and Sisi where none is deserved.

    • @Bike_Lion
      @Bike_Lion 5 лет назад +2

      @@user-uy6uc5ey5q - You talk about "spinning simplistic narratives," and yet that's *precisely* what you're doing here.
      You're pushing this myth of the "Alawite regime" which is simply not the case. Look at who holds most of the top government positions in Syria - Syria's prime minister, defense minister, foreign minister, deputy foreign minister, vice president, interior minister, deputy defense minister, director of military intelligence, etc. - all Sunni Muslims. Even Assad's wife is Sunni.
      And yet the regime-change pushers keep pushing this myth of an "Alawite regime" which is totally bogus. Syria's government is secular and reflects the diversity of the country.
      Also keep in mind that the US and its allies/proxies, including countries bordering Syria, spend years pouring shit tons of weapons, funding, and foreign fighters into "rebel" groups - mostly Islamist extremist terrorists - to try to overthrow the government. It would have fallen long long ago were it not for broad support among the Sunni majority.
      Now none of this is to say that the Syrian government is perfect (what government is?!) or that significant reforms aren't needed, but it's certainly far better than ISIS or al-Qaeda controlling the country! Or some indefinite war like we've seen in Libya.
      And likewise with Egypt. Sisi's government can certainly be criticized, but it's better than having the Muslim Brotherhood running the country!
      With Saudi Arabia and the role the UK and US have played, I largely agree, though you didn't present any new information.
      Like I said in other comments though, an analogy can be drawn to Nazism and other forms of fascism in early 20th century Europe....
      The Western powers and businesses played a significant role in facilitating the rise of the Nazis and other fascists - seeing them as a useful bulwark against Communism. But this doesn't mean that Nazism/fascism weren't toxic ideologies in their own rights which needed to be called out and resisted. And the same goes for the Wahabbism that the Saudis have been exporting.

      However, without US imperialist foreign policy, al-Qaeda and ISIS don't exist, from the proliferation of Salafi / Wahhabi schools, most indiscriminate terrorist acts, to a right-wing caliphate.
      Since al-Qaeda etc. do exist, then an honest assessment of US foreign policy must be the objective, not a so-called "war on terror". Remove the root causes that give substance to right-wing propaganda (foreign military bases, the drone program), stop multi-billion dollar arms sales to the region, and cut funding / training to reactionary elements in pursuit of regime change. And I think she does realize this, as her opposition to regime change wars would do just that - allow for stable societies to form and persist. I think her stance is ULTIMATELY people are doing terrible things because of this ideology.
      I just think she needs to work on her messaging and reiterate that dangerous ideologies like Wahhabism dont take root unless the populace is under extreme duress of one kind or another.

      But the main point is that being hawkish on terrorism as a foreign force does nothing but exacerbate the situation. Terrorism is tactic to be prevented and disincentivized, not fought on a battlefield.
      Similarly, Americans aren't largely fascists, but the deterioration of material conditions have allowed fascism to come back into style. The same in Europe. The material precedes ideological.

      @@pthomasgarcia my point is by stopping regime change, Tulsi effectively is a hawk on terrorism because she is addressing the root cause of it to begin with.
      Russia bombed the shit out of ISIS and helped Syria kick them out (for the most part) and now people are returning there. That would be the kind of "hawkishness" against terrorism that I would support. That did not result in an increase in their ideology
      She has called for us to stop interference across the board - for example, she recently said we need out of Afghanistan and AFAIK that isnt a regime change war. But she understands that US interference fosters the environment - if not openly like in the case of Idlib, then as a side effect like in Afghanistan - for shit ideologies. BUT at the end of the day the foot soldiers/individuals committing the atrocities are doing it BECAUSE of the ideology, not their hatred of the US.
      For example, the hatred of the US isnt causing Wahhabists to murder other muslims that ALSO hate the US (like in Syria for example). That's the ideology doing that. I think this is why she is saying the primary cause of terrorism is THE IDEOLOGY, not US involvement.
      But in this interview, she admits that US involvement (sometimes directly, other times indirectly) facilitates the growth of such ideologies, citing the Idlib case as an example for the direct assistance part.
      I do agree she needs to work on her messaging and link the issues of regime change wars and terrorism together more though. I just think it's a bad criticism because by stopping regime change wars, she IS addressing the root issue. I think she just needs to clarify this point.
      She would benefit from just flat out saying, "By stopping regime change wars, we can reduce the spread of Wahhabism and other extremist ideologies"
      I think people are getting too hung up on the specific language and forgetting that by stopping regime change wars and US interference in other countries, she DOES directly address the issue of our actions facilitating the growth of extremist ideologies

      P. Thomas Garcia She wants to change the policy. That’s where Greenwald dropped the ball. He should have asked how does she want to stop terrorism. He should have made the interview more conversational and less confrontational. It’s like he was trying to show off how much he knows, instead of trying to get her to open up. His long questions could have been broken up into smaller questions and he should have kept digging deeper, instead of stopping. I felt Tulsi would have quelled our doubts in this area, if he pushed her past giving her stock answers. He insulted her a bit like saying election reform was unimportant when she trying to reform it and it is important. If terrorism was a big issue he should have asked that in the beginning, instead of starting with the laundry list of everything she believes in that are good. Instead he ended things by saying her stance is paradoxical when his questioning was somewhat perplexing. Is he saying we should not stop terrorism or is he oppose to the methods we used, if so, he should have ask her how she wants to stop terrorism.

Most of the comments here (and at the Intercept) are very positive for her, though I suspect people here are also critical of Modi and see her answer as a tad weak near the end of the interview. But you start reading Twitter there are quite a few people that did not respond well to her, with a significant portion of people critical of her for criticizing Modi, and "Not disputing" the persecution of Muslims (and Christians, but the anger is mostly about Muslims from what I can tell). A balanced opportunity to let the politician showcase themselves both in humanity and under pressure. He let her take positions, and then made her defend them. He challenged her, and she was able to respond with nuance. Very clearly, she was wanting to know the context of that statement, as she may well have been brown nosing modi to get a desired diplomatic outcome. From that I learnt she is strong in diplomacy - she did not deny, nor prevaricate but rather affirmed a position. I admire that flexibility of mind and recognition of realpolitik. I hope for more Glenn greenwald interviews. She will wipe the floor with the other people in the debate, they will be left screaming at her, while she calmly and logically dismantles them. Their only defence is to shut her out, or drown her out. They are working on number one, expect number two tactic on the night.
