In 2018, President Trump signed the groundbreaking First Step Act, a criminal justice bill which enacted reforms that make our justice system fairer and help former inmates successfully return to society.
* The First Step Act's reforms addressed inequities in sentencing laws that disproportionately harmed Black Americans and reformed mandatory minimums that created unfair outcomes.
* The First Step Act expanded judicial discretion in sentencing of non-violent crimes.
* Over 90% of those benefiting from the retroactive sentencing reductions in the First Step Act are
Black Americans.
* The First Step Act provides rehabilitative programs to inmates, helping them successfully rejoin society and not return to crime.

No record should be sealed until each victim of each criminal is contacted and their opinion of this record-sealing proposal is heard. Serious objection by a substantially damaged victim of a criminal would result in no sealing of record of that criminal.
Time to look after victims first. But, democrats couldn't care less.
Victims will still vote Democrat. That's proof that the victims of crime don't care, or they are masochist.
You have zero understanding of what you are talking about. Sure is easy to speak big ideals and then do nothing. Have you thought about going to college and getting a criminal justice degree?

At this point, most politicians in this country are a lost cause. They just come up with more b.s laws that do absolutely nothing other than waste everybody’s time and them collect more salary money from taxpayers.

It's all about NYS getting that extra tax money. That said, I'd like to see examples of crimes that this includes before I can agree or disagree.

I used to have a drinking problem over ten years ago. In that time, I got 2 DWI charges. Thankfully I didn't hit anyone back then. I've had no crimes before or since in my life. Having the felony on my record keeps me from good paying jobs. It should be enough to do one's time and change one's life around. But that has not been the case. I believed I'd be civilly punished until I die until this glimmer of hope.
All I can know is my own experience. I hope that helped answer your question a bit. I still have trouble believing this isn't too good to be true for me.

@@kwd3109 This is not for violent crimes, rapes, sex offenders and murderers. It is for lesser Felony and high all misdemeanors and they have to have a clean record for a long while to even have it erased. Did you actually watch the video?
So sad for the victim. People don't realize until they or family member is a victim.

@@ConnieA1262 Yes, thank you, I watched it. Have you ever had your identity stolen? Have you ever had your home broken into and irreplaceable family heirlooms taken? Have you ever had a dishonest employee embezzle money from your business? I guarantee you the victims of these crimes don't forget these things.
