    Summary Notes:-
    Q1) What is the want of your character? What is their goal / what are they trying to get to?
    Q2) What are the stakes? (what happens if this character does NOT get what he/she wants, what happens if he/she DOES get what they want?) There are the external stakes and the philosophical stakes (what will they BELIEVE about the world if they achieve/don't achieve their goal).

    I love how your channel is always focused on script+story. People keep making movies that fail to emphasize why what we’re seeing onscreen matters. You’re actively part of the solution 👏

    Thank you for helping me to see the mind map of how story can work with the different parts (story structure) that you learn about, but feel as if you're painting by numbers, rather than truly being able to express what you want. I can actually put together the different parts and explain how they are connected in different ways. In other words, I can construct my own paradigm, based on what I have learned in your videos, along with some others, but mostly yours.

  • @Explainmerandom

    I disagree... You can have something you want to SAY drive the story and have it run completely counter to anything the character wants or doesn't want. So starting with what needs to be said in a chapter or a story arc is another alternative. I say that cuz it is important to not cram your character with overly simplified drives, or they will be more one dimensional because of it.
    No one's wants are constant in life btw, urges maybe, but what people want is changed by the context
    Just my opinion on it

    I feel like we maybe should care about the philosophical stakes more, but I feel Taken or many heists movies are examples where we actually care about the external stakes way more.

    So, Walter White's sort of an interesting example of how a character can claim to want something and even partly believe this claim but at the end of the day, they want something different.
    Initially, Walt CLAIMS that he's cooking meth to provide money for his beloved family so they can be financially stable after he dies, and I don't doubt Walter did believe this in the beginning. But as the show goes on, you slowly see that no, he really wants the power, the control, to be alive, all the stuff Tyler said.
    That's a really good layered character.

  • @commonsense5199

    does it work with a cast of protagonists? cause their is many I'm trying to figure out. Like their this character, wants to retire of being a detective they going to group meeting because they been through a lot including traumatize as their time as a detective but some event happening have to force this character come out of retirement to help but they still don't want to be a detective anymore.

    Re Breaking Bad: I thought its philosophical theme was - Do the ends justify the means? He wants to leave something behind for his family but at what cost? He loses himself and almost becomes another Michael Corleone. But ultimately his intention was good (to provide for his family) he just realised that the skills he had could only really be used for one thing. It also shows that even a moral, decent person can transform into a criminal. And asks the question that when there are no consequences left and we know we are going to die soon will we all do what Walter did? I mean are we only moral law abiding people because we fear getting caught?

    For a story to work would you need both philosophical and external stakes or could your story work with only one out of two of the steaks in the story?

    • @TheSpectacularRob
      @TheSpectacularRob 2 года назад +3

      I think yes, that’s what will bring the viewer to engage with your story. It will be much more clearer and meaningful

    • @theguywhoneedsalife3742
      @theguywhoneedsalife3742 2 года назад +4

      In your case, yes you would need it. That's because internal and external conflict both come from philosophical content. ( as said in his the purpose of conflicts video ) So without philosophical stakes there would be no external stakes. And even if you somehow wiggled in external stakes ( conflict ) without any philosophical which is basically impossible. ( Its basically impossible because conflict is a fight between to ideologies. Ex. Let's say someone steals an old ladys purse, then you Butt in and try to get it back. Two ideologies clashing against each other, stealing is ok and stealing is bad. Which includes internal conflict and stakes by their ideologies and how they feel about this situation their in and external conflict and stakes but yu running after them resulting in a chase. ) But if you SOMEHOW wiggle no phisophical stakes in the story would have no meaning behind it, no message, no reason. While, some storys can do this, they will still make you feel empty after you finish watching/ reading this story. You'll just feel like this was pointless and a waste of your time. So for a story to work you WOULD need both philosophical and external stakes but you don't have to.

    a question: Is the Philosophical conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist is not of opposite but only a sacrifice away? example: like in snow piercer , Wilson agrees on the sacrifice of few for the humanity to survive. our Hero sacrifices his friends only to reach wilson and his world view and is unsure when he is offered wilsons post.

    Tyler has no references he is a newbie and tries you to sell his own course. It is a making money strategy and you will learn crap from him. It works like a placebo you think you making progress but really you only learn techniques which are not worth to learn and also brings you up from learning your own style of creating new ideas and stories. He only made 1 script, he has not won any Filmfestival/Oscar etc. It is the same for most of the courses. You do not need any paid courses to get good in writing. Do not listen to this bullshit!!!
