Although I agree with a lot of these points, I simply just enjoy this episode quite a lot. The same things goes for Series 7. While I'm aware of all the faults, I still thoroughly enjoy it and rank it highly
Fair enough. I think the distinction between something being "good" vs. enjoyable is an important one to recognise.

Although I never really had an issue with this story, I feel like it could have REALLY benefited from being a 2 parter. Things like body horror on the monks and a character driven episode beforehand could have saved it. I'd really like to see a headless monk operating via Cyberman components. It would at least slightly link the intro to the story.
It is a two parter, just not quite in a way that benefits the story at all

While I think he has become disingenuous in his criticism due to the commercialised nature of RUclips and being known for a sarcastic bad review compromising his integrity of any form of objective criticism you must admit the episode does have a lot of flaws, I think people just give it the benefit of the doubt and over rate this one because of how bad other episodes in this series were.
I've heard a rather interesting fan theory that the Doctor's encounter with Lorna as a child is actually in his future, which is why he doesn't actually recognise her here. I think that adds an extra layer of tragedy to her death, as she's waited so long for the possibility of seeing him again, yet as she lies there expiring he has no idea who she is
I always thought that was established fact rather than a fan theory
But still that means it's even more blatantly set up as a future episode. Not a short comic in a dr who annual.
@@willbaker6532 the whole point of that little scene was supposed to be the fact that Lorna DID meet this Doctor, she met the eleventh Doctor and then spent her entire life trying to find him again as she believed he was this great warrior, she switched sides, betrayed the clerics and then died for the Doctor because of the legend he is. And then we find out all that was essentially for nothing as the Doctor doesn’t even remember her. He just pretends so she doesn’t have to die feeling like nothing. It was him being kind
But it represents the fact that people see him as a warrior, wise man, healer. He makes people afraid, he makes people go to war, he makes people idolize him and sacrifice themselves, he’s become a legend. It shows the affect he has on peoples lives.
So Lorna wasn’t set up as a future storyline she’s just essentially a metaphor for the Doctors legend status and how it leads to loss and war all around him
I'd believe it (or at least believe that ambiguity is intentional), given that that's what Moffat had done already with River in the library, and this is the big River reveal episode, but like Obiwan said, it's definitely about his legend status, which is what a lot of series 5-7 talk about, but especially series 6.
I like knowing and forgetting better because it's more tragic that the doctor did forget not that he just didn't know her yet
Way too nitpicky over the headless monks, not everything needs a complete explanation. If you reviewed Midnight like you did this it would have been a disaster.
I find it way creepier that there's no explanation given for how they can walk around and chant without their heads
Ngl I'm getting so sick of him nitpicking everything moffats written. Comparing how he talks about the Smith era and beyond to Tennant's it's so blatant that he's very biased about things. There's so many things wrong with older series stories that lack explanation or context but because it was written by Davies it doesn't seem to matter

This episode has some "great" moments that accentuate the Doctors darker side, but it all could have been handled in a much more subtle and less melodramatic manner.
The uniforms are different. The 1st religious order are British uniforms and the Demon’s Run order at US Air Force uniforms.
This episode would have been better if we saw a bigger scale of what River talked about her seeing “Army’s turn and run away” with a massive scale of soldiers, ships and set designs. Something like what we saw in The Force Awakens with Hux’s speech before Starkiller fires. And I wish Jack Harkness was in this. It would have been amazing if he were here with everyone
It's not Star Wars, it's Doctor Who. I'm not such a fan of when the show tries to be 'epic.'

1:40 Yeah, of course she can't understand her, she's a baby! The idea is mother keeping her baby calm by whispering nice noises to her, but also with the underlying subtext that Amy is terrified and is trying to convince herself everything will be alright.
This brings up a massive point in how the story was told from RTD’s departure, onwards.
On one hand, the River Song storyline was genuinely fascinating, and I found her to be an incredible source of glee from her first appearance (with 10) to her last (with 12).
This series/episode obviously ramps this up. I was blown away by the twist when I was younger, and upon a second viewing it still kicked me in the head.
On the other hand… Well, everything else.
Moffat made the Doctor the most important being in the Universe, where most of Smiths storylines sound more like cheap fan fiction than functional episodes.
We don’t know WHY this order want to kill him, it’s never explained, to a satisfying degree, in further episodes.
Also I just hated the dynamic between The Doctor and the Ponds, even as a kid. It’s a massive disconnect from 10’s sorrow, and how he needs companions to combat his loneliness, despite knowing he’ll outlive them all one way or another.
Not to mention the cringey “bestest friends” dynamic they have, that so badly juxtaposes 9 & 10’s laid-back/cool demeanour with Rose, Donna and Martha.
Eleven just comes across as really ignorant of his past (a point made by 10 in DOTD), that, or devolves into childish tantrums when things don’t go his way. He’s also the only Doctor I’ve seen that pretends to be something he isn’t, and when he tries to convince us that he’s “still the same guy”, it really doesn’t land. The guy mentions Rose twice in his entire run.
I hate the nostalgia that comes with series’ like DW, but god I miss the RTD era. I hope that these specials don’t let us down.
I kind of like how frantic the pacing is. Really adds to it imo. Completely disagree with your rating on this one.

Dunno how you can avoid pointing out the positives before the twists like "Good men have too many rules. Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many.”, the music when Rory has to leave Amy and fake Melody for the fight, etc. I also don't understand how you find the Doctor losing it at Colonel Runaway to be a bad thing.
I think part of the problem is that he demands something that many critics demand: Complete and utter story given to them in a specific manner. Many of these items he is complaining about about are just art direction, or background info. Those planes are in the background because the two gay Anglian marines are maintenance crew. That is it. There's no big reason needed for planes to be there, just that they are in the hangar bay.
He complains about the idea of a cot being kept inside of the TARDIS, and then says "How many of your parents still have your cot. No, storage doesn't count." I am just like "Why doesn't it count? Its a storage area. Why throw out good furniture?
Its more like he's trying to find items to complain about. I mean, its a way to do it, but at the same time, but again, Its like only HIS view is the correct one, while missing out on ALL subtext.
@ That is absolutely fair now that I think about it. Though, If I am running away, and had infinite storage, at some point, I am grabbing all the stuff in my house at some point. The doctor had enough time for that.

For real, I love that bit with the Cybermen where they're talking about some monster just ripping it's way through the ship with ease, and you expect the Doctor to come out of the door, and it turns out it's Rory, implying that he fucking slaughtered those Cybermen on the lower levels like a beast. For someone who complains about Rory being disrespected in these episode, he doesn't seem to care that his favorite character was finally thrown a bone.
@ What do you mean it's not mentioned again? He's being heroic and competent for the rest of the episode. Or do you want the Doctor to pause in his tracks and say "Hey, Rory, remember how you took on a cyberman ship?". If you mean it isn't mentioned in other stories... Yeah after that you'd think he'd be more capable when put in dangerous situations later on.
And the scene provides all the context we need. Rory needs information from the Cybermen, and his love for Amy has filled him with new determination to face them himself. I mean, if you think that's cringe, or too nicey sweety for Doctor Who that's your opinion, but you can't say it ISN'T some sort of context for why Rory acts so capable now. And it's also consistent with his characterization the previous series finale, Rory is the most motivated and capable when Amy is in danger.
I think the fact him taking the cybermern on is left vague is good, because 1. I don't want to see what he did to fight them off, because any answer would be way more underwhelming than what I could imagine. 2. You wouldn't get the reveal. And I think this reveal is very nice here, because the running gag in Moff's stories is that Rory is inadequate compared to the Doctor, so the fact that Rory not only gets to be a hero, but specifically a hero in place of the Doctor is important. SO I think you should retain this "It's not the Doctor, it's Rory" twist for that reason. And 3. The fact that how Rory defeated them is vague means that you can still put him in Doctor Who scenarios later without him destroying any stakes by just being able to badass his way out of every obstacle. If we were directly shown Rory fighting Cybermen hand to hand, next time we see him in an episode we would ask "Why won't he just wrestle the minotaur to death?"
A lot of points and criticisms raised in this one do get addressed later… you’re only halfway through the series Harry ;)
Not the biggest fan of the Matt Smith era though I must admit you’re being way too overly “critical” at times.

Yeah he seems to hate anything thats not RTD he overly praised that era and seems to just not even pay attention to these episodes, honestly half of his complaints seem to come from him not paying attention to the episodes or simply not having gotten to the end of the story yet

I think there's a lot of potential in exploring the kind of damage the Doctor inadvertently causes but whenever the show mines the concept for drama it's always so watered down.
It annoys me how things don't get explained properly in this series, like why are those people are at war with the doctor? And then later on when they just casually say that they make his death a fixed point in space and time... how? These concepts could've been so interesting if a bit more detail had been shown. But no, we get episodes like curse of the black spot instead lmao
Their motivation is explained in Smith’s final episode.
Because its a multi-season story it helps to actually watch the show

I have very mixed feelings about this episode. I see *exactly* what was attempted, I see *exactly* what Moffat was going for, but the fact this was the first time we had properly seen these baddies, and the headless monks were a weak replacement for what could've been a Silent story to explore their relationship with Eyepatch Woman further, since the show never really does anything much with Eyepatch Woman and felt overall kinda doodoo fart, but it was clear what was being done.
If you listen to your earlier reviews, you'll know how to actually give a fair review. These have become a mess of trying to make doctor who look as bad as possible by cherry-picking duller moments and completely ignoring good moments. Look, I can believe that you enjoy Matt Smith's era less than David Tennant's. But the most recent reviews have been overly unfair. What you congratulated doctor who for doing in earlier stuff, you condemn them for now. These reviews have just become a contest of how miserable you can make the show look. It is unfair and disingenuous.
Agreed. Harry used to be funny and balanced in his cynicism, now he’s just bored and grumpy, and it’s not entertaining to sit through. I get that he wants to move onto more sophisticated material, such as My Dinner With Andre, but it’s making him sound like a snob. If he feels like he’s outgrown this show, then he should just stop reviewing it.
Reminds me of how in his Age of Steel review he just completely glossed over the scene with the disabled cyberman and chalked the whole scene up as just being a boring death for a forgettable character. Even with his Tennant episodes he was getting pretty bad.

that line of “i don’t know but she was very brave” is a work of art, best line in doctor who history, definitely not a useless statement that leads to nowhere
Think you need to watch more, yeah is a good line that shows the disconnect between the characters but hardly the best ever
"Demons run when a good man goes to war" that line gave me shivers the first time I heard it
I think the only thing that should’ve been different is, as you say, how the Doctors “debts” were established, what debts, and who those people, including Vastra, Strax and Gamma forest girl and what they meant to the Doctor in previous stories so we could appreciate them more. It’d also have been ideal to have one episode before with the Doctor and Rory figuring out where Amy was so it didn’t feel so rushed. Everything was good in my opinion. The reason Judoon etc stood to defend the Doctor despite the last series trying to capture him was because in the last series they thought he was going to blow up the universe, i.e. the Tardis exploding, they were wrong. Despite his good deeds they obviously won’t let that stop them from taking action in such a scenario. AND I swear there memory was wiped after such events when the Doctor reversed it all meaning they forgot ever having hostility towards him. Besides that, the churches motivation was established, but it’s easily missed because it’s a motivation to be fully fleshed out in the future, most would be blinded by “How can you see the doctor and hate him when he literally saves the universe relentlessly”, the motivation was this “war! Against you.... Doctor” of course atm we don’t know what this means. And we are not meant to, we are meant to be asking the same question as the Doctor “What war? And why does that make you wanna kill the Doctor”, but most would be left confused. But the churches motivation was the devastation caused by the battle of Trenzalore. Since Madam Kovarian broke away from the church and travelled back in time with a batch of silence to kill the Doctor, but they were going off of what they’d seen from the Doctor of Trenzalore.
There's other crap stuff, like the sexy lizard lady getting introduced only 30 minutes before but somehow having intimate knowledge of the TARDIS, Time Vortex and Time Lords as a species, something that shouldn't exist because they were gone before her people existed.
Any plot that relies on as much mental gymnastics as what you wrote there could typically benefit from a rewrite.

You mentioned the doctor becoming the 'demon'. There is visual representation of this: when River is reciting the poem, there's a shot of the Doctor running to Amy when she says 'demons run' and when she says 'a good man goes to war' it cuts to Rory fighting the monks. The Doctor was never the good man talked about, it was always Rory.
That interpretation kinda cheapens the line though. ‘Demons run when a good man goes to war’ implies demons run from the good man. Its a rephrasing of a dozen or so existing quotes about not poking a sleeping bear. But if the Doctor is the demon, he’s not running from Rory cuz they’re on the same side of the fight. So is the phrase just saying that demons (the Doctor) run, as in they physically move quickly, because the Doctor happens to be running in that scene? Okay? Why is that supposed to be meaningful?

My favourite Doctor Who episode of the modern era.
I thought the Headless Monks were a really cool concept, that they're so dedicated to following their hearts rather than their heads that they literally behead themselves, I just kinda wish that they'd been... y'know... expanded on. Or explained. Or relevant.

I think Series 6 and Series 2 are fundamentally opposite in terms of reviewing: Series 2 had some of the worst individual episodes but the two parters and finale were absolute stand outs. Meanwhile, the Series 6 two parters and finale are awful (in terms of relating to the bloated central theme of the Doctor’s death) but has some really good individual episodes when they distance themselves from the plot
I was so confused about Madame Vastra back then I thought she was a classic era character or something. But in the end her and her companion are really funny characters throughout the following seasons and I've always loved seeing them along with Strax.
This episode might be meh but the River Song reveal is the coolest thing from modern Dr Who in my opinion and I was genuinely surprised when it happened.

That sounds like cope. The obvious assumption everyone would make is how everyone ends up with their DNA, the old devil's tango, especially given how sexual Amy was being with the Doctor. Also why would that be how Time Lords are made? They were a species, not just some humans that discovered time travel and got all fucked up genetically from doing it.
There's supposed to be far more differences between a human and a time lord beyond just time essence. Time Lord is a rank, for one thing. It's earned at an academy on Gallifrey. I always thought it demeaned everything a time lord was, all those billions of years of advancement, all that scientific understanding and exploration that got them to where they were. All meaningless, since all it takes to make another with is to bang while time traveling. How many time lords do you thing Jack Harkness has created? You can't tell me he and the other time cops didn't hide the pickle on occasion while using their time machines.

Really? I can think of far worse Tennant episodes that you have rated higher. This entire era you are just focusing wholly on negatives because your 13th Doctor reviews probably found the most popularity. These aren’t reviews anymore, these are you hating on Moffat’s era and disregarding all the brilliant parts of it.

This is getting completely ridiculous now. This isn't criticism, this is you nitpicking the hell out of every episode as bitterly and cynically as possible. You have no idea how much work goes into assembling a script or production like this-if you tried then you'd have a hell of a lot more respect for these episodes.

I think the idea of The Doctor becoming the bad guy stems from the idea that he mentions that he got "too noisy". He was slowly drawing more and more attention to himself and getting more destructive as a result.

Harry, I feel like that baby thing is more of a personal problem than anything wrong with the show. Cause, you know... babies exist in real life. It would be odd if babies never did appear or were never mentioned. And it's not like they appear in the show that frequently.
i’m glad i was young when these episodes came out because it allows me to rewatch them as a pure nostalgia hit but i’m absolutely loving your reviews of this season as the critiques you bring up almost always get a good “ohhhhhhhh” out of me as i often miss the short comings of these episodes myself.
oh but i do just want to say my mum went and got her cot from when she was a baby for me and then kept it around for my sister, the doctor must’ve had kids at some point to end up with a granddaughter so perhaps his kids used it and he still had it around from back then.
I never really understood why people loved the reveal that River was the Ponds’ child so much. To me it always felt like it didn’t really change anything. The group doesn’t seem to grow closer because of it, there’s no dramatic twist with River killing the doctor because we already knew they were married, and it just feels like the show trying to connect two previously disconnected characters, like Martha and Mickey dating in The End Of Time. What am I missing?
I agree that the group doesn't seem to grow much closer because of their relationship. I think this is because of River simply not appearing in enough episodes for that function - after this there's only Let's Kill Hitler, TWORS and TATM before Amy and Rory leave the Tardis. You can explain this in-universe, though, as it's not like Amy and Rory actually raised River. But I think DW in general could do with a bit more consistency of characters - with Amy and 11 staying in for another series or so, and Clara and 11 maybe would have been better together if they had time to establish a relationship like she did with 12.
I don't think the twist of River killing the Doctor was comparaable to Martha and Mickey dating though. These two characters were already connected and I vaguely remember after this episode feeling like we had found out all the important stuff about River, and kind of thinking that as she was his wife she couldn't possibly also be the impossible astronaut.
I agree. The reveal was satisfying, but that's pretty much it. It doesn't change anything about River Song as a character.
Totally agree, also so blindingly obvious that it was a last minute decision, river even has a terrible line at the end of the episode where the dr dies about pretending not to recognise the astronauts suit...clearly when that episode was written they didnt plan on the girl being river, it always bugged me and undermined rivers character, it would have been way more interesting to actually have a better plot about her marriage and murder of the dr

Harry is ultimately an RTD fanboy. He happily overlooks the nauseating self-indulgence of Series 4 while turning up the heat of criticism for the Moffat era onwards. This story would've probably been better as a 2-parter, with time to build up the characters. It was never going to match the end of Series 4, but is still rather epic for a standalone episode. I don't think there's another standalone (non-special) episode that has this level of epicness in NuWho. This one did stand out to me.

It's funny to think Moffat was showrunner for six years but his story arcs tend to be very underdeveloped.

If 11 had a time lord victorious sort of moment, then River saying the Doctor shouldn't "Carry on the way he is" would have of been better.

@ fair enough, obviously u don't have to like it although I wouldn't say it's bad, I think I do need to rewatch it sometime but I doubt even then I'd give it any less than a 6/10 and the reason I like it, is it's a bit unique, I like the reveal of river song and it has a good build up to the doctor going to demons run and after that is quite action packed, also u said how the episodes in the season is but it doesn't, ok it has its bad parts like the flesh 2 parter, lets kill hitler and the finale, but then it has some great stories like the god complex and the silence 2 parter

Highly inconsistent scoring! I agree that there are flaws in this - when I watched it I was wondering if I'd missed something when Mde. vastra suddenly appeared - I also had an issue with the Gay Anglican Soldiers, and the Cybermen cameo, and the Buccaneers at the end - but it is light years ahead of Chibnall and you gave a 4/10 to Eve of the Daleks which has few redeemable features and is about to be put on Wikipedia as the entry under ham, ham-fisted!

When we see them in Next Doctor it’s leftover ones from the Void but when we see them again in Pandorica Opens and then here they have spaceships and a legion
To be fair the Cybermen from the void were literally just babies
I was really confused at the end when the Doctor pulled out that weird thing and called it a cot. I didn’t know what a cot was. Maybe it’s just because the UK and America divulge on some words, but that was really confusing to me and it kinda made the already confusing story even harder to understand until River spelled it out.
I really love the ending and I think its made up for the rest of the episode over the years because this is still one of my favourite episodes of the season, I think a lot of people kinda expected it to be River but the way they use the Bucket girl to give us that great "water in the forest" line was so satisfying.
Yeah Moffat had some really great dialogue. Reminds me of the whole something old something new line from the series 5 finale. Although my issue is that even though those lines and certain moments are so cool, it always feels like plots are built up and resolved in a really muddled way which undermines the flow of the story.

Remember having issues with this episode. Moffat introducing characters that we have not seen before and us expecting to like them just because the doctor does.And Matt smith's angry acting that nine and twelve could do so much better smith sounds like a baby throwing there toys out of there pram. Don't no if that was meant to by the case.
This whole channel is basically ‘let’s see what negative things he has to say about brilliant episodes’. It’s like reading the daily Mail comments on a positive news story
This episode has always held a special place in my heart. Its not made well in hindsight but I still un-ironically love it. I especially enjoy the slightly darker view at how far the doctor is willing to go for the people he loves and his cold dangerous anger that matt is so good at portraying (better than david I think).
def should have been a two parter but i still enjoy it thoroughly
While I think he has become disingenuous in his criticism due to the commercialised nature of RUclips and being known for a sarcastic bad review compromising his integrity of any form of objective criticism you must admit the episode does have a lot of flaws, I think people just give it the benefit of the doubt and over rate this one because of how bad other episodes in this series were.

The way I see it there's all different types of Warriors listening that's a good skill helping people that's a good skill for a warrior you don't have to go inside a battle to be a warrior sometimes being the best warrior it's actually just listening and helping

Average story in my eyes, I only liked particular aspects such as the Doctor rising higher than ever before and then plopping back down to square one. At the end of the day, there isn’t much to hold it up and the visuals are pretty mediocre too in my opinion.
One of those that was made worse by later episodes. The intrigue was still there at this point, but by the end of the series you’d just stop caring and re-watching this was rough.
8:41 a cringeworthy sequence of baby appearances huh? I'm sure he will have no issues when Russel t Davies makes an entire episode about babies as the PILOT of the third season 1 to exist.
This is one of my favourite episode but i never got to see it when it aired because I was at my Nan’s.
Please review the rest of the Tennant and Eccleston era and some of the classes!

While I disagree and would personally give this episode a 7 or 8, I can see why you didn't like it so much.
Totally disagree about the river reveal, its crap and clearly wasnt planned from the beginning. Also would make so much more sense if amy was taken DURING the America episodes when she was taken by the silence
I like this episode but I cant help but be filled with dread watching it because "lets kill hitler" is just so awful.
The Rebel Flesh, The Almost People, A Good Man Goes to War, and Let's Kill Hitler may well be the worst consecutive quadrilogy of episodes in the whole show.
I know people love this one, but I bloody hate it. To me, it's not The Wedding of River Song which kills Series 6 (though I'm far from a fan), it's these four. I can forgive Curse of the Black Spot and pretend Closing Time never happened, and every other episode is fucking legendary. _It's these fourrrrr._
All these snippets in this episode annoy me. I was hoping for more background on the gamma Forrest, ect and we got nothing
Is it bad I'm enjoying the nitpicking. I think the show was quite flawed at this point and overrated by a big section of the fan base. Although even I can admit the score was a tad harsh
In terms of not seeing the Doctor actually _meet_ a lot of these people, the idea is that the Doctor has lived so long, and been so far, that he's touched every life. Some may remember him as a hero, others as a villain. But either way, his lineage spans far beyond what we've seen on-screen.
Still a dumb story. I feel embarrassed watching it with people.
I was about to agree with u but the episodes good, maybe I need to rewatch it and knock it down a few points but at the moment I’d give it a 9/10

This episode is pretty pants, but compared to most of series 6 it's alright, so it gets rated higher than it deserves by a lot of people.

I assume you're one of those people too stupid to realise it's not that good.
It's like Fugitive of the Judoon (though not as bad). A pretty average episode which is seen as good entirely because of all the references and teases it has - but on rewatch you realise it's a boring plot and the teased elements went nowhere, or were incredibly disappointing.
