      I say they were both human, because if he was a copy, why wouldn't he attack?
      Macready was a bit out of it, so what was stopping him.

      Dabunny Rabbit
      Not only that, Childs also had a pierced ear and a gold tooth. So unless the Thing had learned from its mistakes from the prequel I would assume at least Childs was human. It wouldn't make sense to make McReady the thing either as he destroyed the big one and set the base on fire.

      That's why The Thing is my #1 horror movie, the best thing it could have happened after all these years is that Carpenter forgot who was intended to be the alien so the mystery will always remain...until some bullshit director decides to do a sequel with Childs possibly being the Thing.

      @jordanjohnston655 5 лет назад +17

      @@robertward5047 Fits the Nihilistic theme and finale though, sense of dread and ultimate defeat.
      To play devil's advocate, I could see somewhat of a musical number at the end considering it was Ennio Morricone who did the music. Something more powerful and orchestral I suppose could definitely work. For some reason Howard Shore Scanners end credits theme comes to mind, with a Morricone style including the Thing theme.
      Still love what we actually got.

      It was the sense of mistrust and paranoia that came through for me in that film. The desperation and panic in some of the characters voices and how they turned on each other - great acting and great directing! Thomas Waites who played Windows really brought that to the forefront...’I mean he could beeeee one of those thinggssss!!!’
      Kurt Russel speaking into the tape recorder ‘Nobody...trusts anybody now...’
      - a classic piece of cold subdued acting by Russel...great voices - I could go on...
      I don’t know what anyone else thinks but the recent remake - I couldn’t watch it...the characters were so watered down and so far away from the intensity of the John Carpenter remake it just wasn’t worth it for me...

      Definitely his best. As much as I love Halloween, The Thing is miles ahead of it. Definitely different types of stories and horror, but they both share a tension that slowly builds throughput the movie until the levee breaks in the third act and they both leave you with an ending sequence that leaves with questions instead of answers. The Thing utilized it's tension ro perfection. Both films perfectly cast as well.

    I loved the way the ending made me feel, it was amazing. All that paranoia from the movie, all that wondering who was who until we only have Mac left, and just when you think it's over Childs shows up to give you that sense of paranoia one last time. Maybe nobody is the thing, and John just wrote the movie in such a brilliant way that you, the viewer, end up being just as paranoid as the crew once was and refuse to believe that the 2 guys can have a semi happy ending sharing a drink knowing that they gave up their lives to save the world, because you're allowing the paranoia to consume you just as the crew had.

      It's also a running metaphor, at the start MacReady pours whiskey into the chess wizard saying "cheating bitch" because it checkmated him, seems he's in a checkmated position to us, but to MacReady, giving the "whisky" to Charles was akin to pouring in the computer and destroying it, hence his chuckle: in one of the scripts, it describes how mac has a flamethrower resting under his blanket/poncho, ready to torch child's, he could also be chuckling because of Child's lack of worry about sharing the drink: Fuchs even says early on "even a small amount of this organism could infect anyone of us, is suggest we prepare our own meals and eat eat out of tins" by this point it's already weeks since first infection so everyone would be used to that fact

    He was perfect for the role, I loved his attitude. The Thing was a masterpiece and he was a big part of that. We still don't know for sure if he was a thing at the end. I suspect he was because he changed his coat and he drank the "whisky" without even thinking about it which was a bit curious. I think it was a brilliant ending, it left us without all the answers and were still discussing it to this day. One of my favorite movies ever.

    What made The Thing so great was the exceptionally talented cast. Keith David is such a great and believable actor. He really sells it which is what makes this movie such an incredible classic and so nightmarishly horrorfying is that these actors make it believably real! Their reactions are perfect. It's stood the test of time. I've watched this movie at least 20 times and it's just as scary the last time as it was on the first. Wish I could see it in a theater again!

      It's more than that though the cast is incredibly talented. John's direction, John & Alan Howarath piecing Ennio Moricone's score in synth, the special effects makeup and prop dept aka Rob Bottin, the constructed US Outpost 31 camp, the setting all of it plays a huge role.

      Same, if there`s one thing i hate it`s an unfinished story.
      We don`t neccesarily need to see it, but i`d like to think there IS some sort of conclusion written somewhere or something intended as story progression that we`ll never get to lay our eyes on.
      Theory`s are the main thing keeping it alive, but if there`s canonically nothing after this it would make all theory`s redundant and pointless, hell they might as well all count as true at that point.

    I think the thing people have to keep in mind when debating this is that the ending was ambiguous on purpose. Any clue to who, both or neither simply wasn't intended by the filmmaker. There are no clues...because there is no answer. Period.

      The whole movie gives you clues who could be a thing or not. The clues you have to look for are the changes in personality... it’s what the thing can’t imitate. Child’s at the end wasn’t the same as child’s in the beginning.

      Of course, but because of the Dunning-Kruger effect, there will always be idiots trying to apply their post mortem theories in any way they can.
      The open door scene with the snow pouring in where Childs left the compound (and the open door behind that one), as well as his sleepiness on the same position a few scenes before, now that's a deliberate clue. Especially since giving you clues is the only purpose of that scene. Changes in personality and acting out of character is the real clue as well.
      Everything else may or may not be deliberate, and may be your imagination looking for clues that are not there.
      The story is told well. The ending is perfect and there are enough real clues not to go searching for the invented ones.
      What's wrong with all these people?

    • @Ocrilat
      @Ocrilat 4 года назад +1

      @@Luka_menorykee John Carpenter, Kurt Russel and other people connected to the film have said that all the actors thought that they were 'the Thing'. And that though there were clues during the movie (like the eye gleam) they went to particular lengths to make sure that there were no 'clues' in the end. Originally Carpenter wanted the ending to be completely ambiguous, and any clues in the end were either accidental or fans letting their imaginations get away from them...the latter being the point.
      Also, I don't think Dunning-Kruger is at work here as much as apophenia.

    • @stevesmith1383
      @stevesmith1383 6 лет назад

      the problem with stuff like that is that the film crew makes mistakes. It's hard to get complete consistency
      and some down right mistakes. Like when they visit the Norwegian base, and they see that one guy having committed suicide and frozen with blood dripping down his wrists.
      when they were making the prequel, they realized that no way can a person cut their neck that much after having already cut their wrists. in the 1982 version it looks like like the dude had an axe taken to his neck, rather than a blade slitting it.
      Even books make mistakes and they don't have to deal with things like budget and special effects. Like in Harry Potter, Harry's invisibility cloak is revealed to be one of the 3 deathly hallows, able to give complete invisibility, yet earlier in the series Moody's eye is able to see through it, hence a plot hole.
      or they ignored things for enhanced effect. I was watching the Lost World again the other day and normally when the T-rex's approach there is the sound of their footsteps. But they have no footsteps when they approach the trailer. It's so we the audience don't know there are 2. And that one if on each side of the trailer. Similarly when they return to knock the trailer off the bridge, nothing. Only Malcom happens to be looking in their direction and tells everyone to hang onto something cause he knows they are about to be rammed. But again no sound of a charging T-Rex about to ram a trailer.

Until somebody decides to do a sequel, they killed the alien and then while their end is left ambiguous they likely froze to death.

    One of my favorite actors. I’d love to see a badass action or crime film (maybe even an action horror) with him and Tony Todd as the two leads. As for a sequel to The Thing, it would be too late to do this now, but I would’ve loved to see a sequel that followed at least most of what went on in the first two Thing comic books from Dark Horse. In those, neither Child’s nor MacReady are the thing, but members of a rescue team they encounter become infected as a result of contact with the remains of one of the creatures that wasn’t fully destroyed in the explosion at the end of the movie. I don’t know where the story went after those first two volumes, and I’d be fine with some altering of the story, but I remember reading that later volumes of the comic series resulted in the creature making it to South America and posing a much larger threat because of the warmer weather and populated areas.

    The whole idea about Childs (Keith David) being the thing at the very end because of a lack of breath plumes is just plain silly, and the very concept of the Thing's physiology totally dispels it.
    Remember what Blair said about it perfectly replicating the internal organs of whatever being it was imitating, therefore it would still have a functioning heart, kidneys, liver, and -- yes -- lungs that would still produce a breath plume in a very cold environment, and if you watch the Shout Factory edition of the movie on Blu-Ray, you can indeed see a bit of breath plume from Childs at the very end, just not as much because he is (as Keith David speculated) closer to the fire than MacReady, therefore producing less visible pluming.

      While I like the idea that the prequel put forward about metal inside your body like fillings or braces etc, it's kind silly from an external point of view. No reason the thing can't simply take the object and put it on. A ring or ear ring would be easy for the thing to simply put on. The Thing was putting clothes on as it is.

    • @cainabel6356

      The Thing can easily just put a gold tooth in its mouth, as well as pierce its own ears. It can assimilate the person entirely, once it takes over. All it needs to do is grab the tooth and place it in its mouth. Then its mouth would just hold onto the golden tooth. Then it just puts on the ear ring.
