  • We had an interesting discovery in our raised beds, now as the snow is starting to recede. We were taken aback by an onion looking thing fully growing. It was still covered in snow just yesterday! Upon closer inspection and reviewing our plans from last year, we are pretty sure this is Allium Fistulosum, a green onion variety that we grew to full maturity last year. This particular variety, we think, is called Guardsman. This onion is in the family of Siberian Onions and it's apparent they can survive down to at least zone 3! Some of our Facebook users also reported success down to zone 2 and even zone 1.
What a surprise for us. We will do some more experiments with this variety and make sure this is a repeatable result. Nonetheless, a cool discovery!

We had something very similar happen to us down here in Kenai. I was scrambling to complete some projects on our first day of snow last October, broke my leg, and I couldn't finish harvesting our veggies. So, around March I began working on a heater project in my high tunnel, and as I was digging around in my soil, I found several onions that were not harvested. I went ahead and let them continue growing, and now they are quite large! I will see if I can over winter more onions this year and see what happens next year. It will be very interesting to see if they can be treated similar to garlic.

Sorry about your leg, that definitely puts a drag on harvesting! Super cool discovery for us, as we didn't think it was a "thing." I'd been considering a Walking Egyptian onion for a zone 3 allium perennial that isn't chives, but spring onions are just as good in my book. Definitely makes me curious about concepts like a fall sowing of onions, too.

@@frostygarden907 Yep, we got some Egyptian Walking Onions going, but it would be great for other perennial options!
