Raising Hundreds Of Garden Starts From Seed Indoors (Part 2 - Plug To Transplant)
Hello again, everyone! This is part two of our growing from seed series! In this video, we cover everything from the initial seedling transplant all the way up to the point where we have a plant that can be put into our gardens!
We grow well over a thousand plants, from seed, indoors every season. This video covers all the important things that we're paying attention to. From the actual mechanics of transplanting, watering our plants, how we harden them off to our strategies that we use to planting our gardens into a cold climate. Between part one and this video, it covers pretty much every aspect of our growing from seed process!
Again, we want to stress that we have to grow indoors out of...

Family Scale Food Production In Extreme Cold Climates (Lecture Series)
Просмотров 2992 месяца назад
We've given this presentation a few times in several cities and towns across Alaska. We figured that the content would be useful to our broader audience, so we decided to record it! This was our presentation given to the Anchorage Gardening Club in March of 2024. We like to describe this lecture as basically a synthesis of our understanding when it comes to family scale food production in extre...
Growing Hundreds Of Garden Starts From Seed Indoors (Part 1 | Seed To Germination)
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.3 месяца назад
This has been one of those landmark videos that we've been wanting to make since we started making videos for our channel. And that is covering the process we use to grow over a thousand garden starts from seed to garden transplant, indoors, every single growing season. Once we had written the script for this video, it became clear this topic is considerable enough that we had to break it up in...
Vegetable Variety Selection In Northern & Cold Climate Gardens
Просмотров 7974 месяца назад
OK, you've asked us over and over again. The question always comes up about "what varieties do you grow?" And we've always been a bit cagey about it. Not because we're hiding anything, we talk about the varieties we grow all the time! The reason we don't make a list is really because we think about that question in a very different way than the people who are asking it. As somewhat advanced gar...

As larger scale container gardeners, we often get the question about whether you can re-use your container garden soil from year to year. The short answer is, yes, absolutely you can re-use your container garden soil. We've been re-using our container garden soil stock for nearly a decade at this point. The point of this video is to show you the various techniques we've used to solve both stora...
Harvesting Strategy For Large Gardens In Cold Climates

We put a fair bit of thought and strategy into the general harvesting of our considerable garden. When you're growing in a cold climate, after that first frost date, your garden is always at potential risk of frost. More Important Than Fertilizer | Water Soluble vs. Granular Plant Fertilizers

The more we have gardened, especially in an extreme northern climate, the more we have come to appreciate the different types of plant fertilizers out there. We've found it to be a little more nuanced than "wha...
Summer In A Glass - The Basil Mojito

      Depending on what you're overwintering, they may be able to tolerate it entirely unaided. (Albeit, they will grow slowly or not at all.) You can also switch your focus to colder climate veggies and you'll do great. Things like kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, lettuce, radish and so forth prefer generally cool temperatures. Glad you found our lecture & other tips helpful!

    It is interesting to see people's experience of SFG. I did think I would need to be fertilizing. I think large brassicas and plants like squash need 2 to 4 square feet. It probably doesn't make sense to use up such a large section of your raised bed for such plants. Though Mel suggests you might need 3-4 raised beds per person per year, so perhaps you would plant in separate beds. Like your container gardening!! I never thought you could grow corn in containers. What an eye opener!

    • @frostygarden907
      @frostygarden907 9 дней назад

      Indeed. I do think there's some differences in people's knowledge, depending on how (and even when) you learn the technique. If you've read the books, there's significant differences between the various editions. I think 3-4 beds is only a starting point, especially if you're using SFG to grow larger plants. Thanks for the comment! Oh, and corn does great in containers!

    With the oil, it isn't hours as much as age. The oil get's contaminated when you run the engine. Letting that oil sit for long periods damages the cylinder walls etc.

    • @frostygarden907
      @frostygarden907 29 дней назад

      That is conventional wisdom, yes. But, if you're not actually operating the tool, I think "fresh oil" is of marginal benefit. We typically run in spring and do maintenance in the fall, so "most" of the storage time (winter) is with fresh oil.

      @frostygarden907 Месяц назад

      I would correct the oil level first. Check it on the dip stick before you start the machine, it should be halfway up the stick when its right. If the air filter is super saturated with oil, it's a good idea to clean it out and re-oil it again.

    Just curious about planting 6 bush beans per bucket. You don't have a problem with Botrytis or Sclerotinia??? I've taken to spacing my beans 12" and even interplanting to prevent the fall mold from taking hold. So was surprised. And curious to know your experience. Maybe the trick is that your buckets are spaced to allow for good air flow ???

    Am guessing that you remain in the area for the full hour that your vegetables are drying out. We do battle on a regular basis with red squirrels. They get in to everything I do on the deck. Wondering if you two encounter interference from squirrels.

    I cover crop my potted plants now by sowing around my cash crop in a circle White Clover because White Clover sucks up Nitrogen from the air naturally and drumps it into the soil to create this natural soil plant feeding effect so my cash crop benefits from that naturally. To prevent the White Clover from using that nitrogen from the air naturally I prune the entire White Clover stem back to 2 inches tall and the excess haircut of that I mix with the soil to let it biodegrade over time to feed the soil even more.

    IF YOU PLAN ON DRIP OR WATERING WITH TAP WATER I ADVISE YOU TO WATER ONE PLANT WITH TAP WATER THE OTHER WITH DISTILLED WATER WHY TO SEE IF YOUR WATER IS GOING TO KILL YOUR PLANTS OR MAKE THEM SICK . LAST YEAR HAD ALL PLANTS DEVELOP CHLOROSES OR STUNED AND NUTRIENT DEFITCEINT . WHEN I STARTED TO USE DISTILLED THEY BECAME MORE COLORFULL AND ALL PLANTS STARTED DOING BETTER ALTHOUGH I LOST ALL PLANTS BEFOR AND COULDNT EVEN GET SEEDS TO SPROUT . VERY SAD I WAISTED MY TIME , MONEY AND FOOD FOR MY FAMILY . IM FROM OHIO SO DONT KNOW IF HAPPINING EVERYWHERE ELSE BUT LIKE I SAIDE DONT WAIST YOUR TIME BECAUSE IN THE LONG RUN YOU DONT WANT TO WAIST TIME , MONEY OR FOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY . I ONLY USE RAIN WATER AND PLANTS ARE ALL DOING GREAT . IMAGINE WHAT THIS TAP WATER IS DOING TO THE HUMAN BODY OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME FROM DRINKING IT . DEMAND WATER TEST FROM YOUR STATE WATER DEPARTMENTS TO SEE WHATS WHAT PEOPLE . MAGA4U

    Thanks for the content My question if you get a chance to answer is If you try to sub garden with direct water to a jug to bottom of container it said it has almost no waste of water and a constant supply But on the same token if a container has all that water in the bottom of it What stops a tomato plant from getting root rot are bacterial fungus

    • @frostygarden907
      @frostygarden907 2 месяца назад

      Sub irrigation requires a little bit more than just water in the bottom of the container. It's typically a "designed" process that has a few things involved. For example, there's an air gap above the water supply, a drain (to rid excess water) and soil/water contact. It's the air gap and drain that prevent over-watering and therefore avoids things like root rot. Some day, I might do a video explaining the technical side of things a bit more, but I don't have anything for now. Hope that makes sense, though! Thanks for the comment, let me know if anything doesn't add up!

      Sure, there's a zillion things that can go wrong with containers. Most of your items have nothing to do with container gardening specifically, but are general gardening issues. The "good soil" is definitely one of them, but we did mention that potting soil is a good choice for most gardeners. Thanks for the comment! Good luck with your gardens.

    I'll just say that even if you are a taller person don't think "Well if little old ladies can handle 4ft wide beds then I can do 5". You probably can until you put up a trellis for your peas to climb or you tomato plants get a bit burley blocking easy access from one side..

    • @frostygarden907
      @frostygarden907 2 месяца назад

      True! There's actually a ton of debate about the "right size" of garden beds. Personally, I think 3 foot beds are "best" for access. But, you also sacrifice a fair bit of garden density. A trellis can be annoying, no matter the size of the bed, it's basically a fence in your way! Thanks for the watch & comment.

      Containers and perennials can be tough in really cold climates. The best thing you can do is give them a bit of thermal mass, like placing the containers next to your home over the winter. (Or, just bring them inside.) You can try things like mulching with straw, which will create insultation. If you have bad luck with survival, the best thing to do is get them in the ground. You can block off parts of the garden to prevent spreading of invasive species, which helps a bunch! Thanks for the comment and watch!

    Greetings everyone! We have finally completed our "from seed" growing series! We hope you find it helpful to see the various aspects of how we raise close to 1,500 plants from seed, indoors, each season! As always, should you have any comments, let us know. Thanks for your continued support of our channel!

    I'm having trouble hearing what you are saying because your music is very distracting. Having no music would be better. I stopped watching at 2 minutes because of it, just so you know.

      We do our current videos with no music in the background. Just too many kinds of speakers out there, it's impossible to master audio for every device. But, we can't fix our older videos without deleting them. Thanks!

    Subbed you, like your style getting straight to the point without any nonsense. Also, most gardening channels talk about much warmer climates than mine, yours look much like here in Finland. Keep up the good work!

      Fantastic! We are growing in a very similar climate to Finland, up in Fairbanks, Alaska. We noticed the same thing you have, so that's why we make content for us northerners. Thanks for the watch & kind comment!

    Six years!? Seriously? Without any rust on the cotter pins? Hmm... The tires on my cart began cracking after two years, and it was kept out of the sun. Wish they make higher quality.

      Ours is still holding up! We are kind of surprised by it as we live in a harsh climate. We did develop a crack in the plastic this last winter, but it's still doing fine as a garden wagon. Sorry for your troubles! Thanks for the watch!
