+Anirudh Katti - No, lasseviren1 is correct, think about it the square meter cancels with the square of the distance and the square coulomb with the product between the two charges. On the other hand, newton alone is the unit of the Force, therefore k could never be just in Newtons. (do not know why is it impossible to answer to your comment directly)

k isn't the permittivity of free space. K is coulumb's constant. Epsilon naught is the permittivity of free space and its like the ability of free space to permit some number of electric field lines.
