So here's a thought on a modern hack for those inner tapes, what about putting in snaps at the length you would regularly tie them? Easy to put together and they'll always be the same every time you put them on. Thanks for the review! Can't wait to make mine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This review saved my fingers and patience when I made mine last weekend. Thanks to you, I DID NOT hand-sew the hems, and I re-ordered the assembly steps. Totally worth it - I think they took me around 4 hours total.
Steel boning is way better imo. For pocket hoops specifically. I made a set of hoops previously with plastic boning and it was crazy flimsy and couldn't support weight, a slight push and it warped. Removed that and tried zip ties. Awful, even worse. Removed that and tried reed. Awful, later learned I had wrong type of Reed and it's really hard to find split-cane in UK. Removed that and tried flat steel. Was amazing! Lightweight and held its shape too, bought in precut lengths so I didn't need tools. Was an expensive venture to find something suitable ^^;; EDIT: This pattern is the same one in the American Duchess book too. Buy the book over the individual pattern and you'll get a lot more patterns. My main gripe with the pattern is that they are not functional pocket hoops. They are a cosplay equivalent. There was an opportunity missed for having actual pockets. I don't know about you but being able to store a suitcase worth of stuff in hoops and not lug around a backpack while wearing your fancy dress is a lot more convenient and practical! Not to mention it looks significantly better! Definitely a missed chance there for AD!
@@Costuming_Drama I ended up making hoops from Corsets and Crinolines instead as I specifically wanted functional hoops. A set of pockets is not big enough for the contents of my bag at an event lol
Maegen Foster for the AD one you’ll need extra pieces for it to function as pocket hoops and not tied panels. If you google ‘corsets and crinolines pdf’ look in that book (it’s free download) for their pocket panniers. It will give you a good idea of the alterations needed to make these functional!
I know you have already made these, but the Robe a la Anglaise you are making could easily have a split bum for support in the back. My split bum folds up into a small square it is padded but I can put it in a vacuum seal bag and squish a lot of the air out packs semi-flat and doesn't add to my hips but to my bum where it's needed.
I made these panniers. I actually made hip rolls and hand stitched them to the top underside of my panniers because my panniers were flattening because of the weight of my dress. The hip rolls help them immensely
Thanks for the review! I'm glad you told us about it! I've been meaning to make my gf a historical piece and this will really help! I'm glad you're better, also! :D
Thank you for showing the interior construction of the panniers, i was considering buying this pattern but now i know not to bc they wont function as *pockets* just as hoops
The pattern for these is actually in the American Duchess book, you'd have to size it up, but if you know how to scale patterns that might be a cheaper option,
Pinterest has some ideas for making custom panniers including the pocket variety. It takes just 3 pattern pieces. The good thing about them is that you can make them however wide or deep that you want them to be. And the pocketed variety doesn't have that weird front and back bulge.
I found it much easier to put all the boning channels on and hem one side before pleating. It's much easier working flat. Then I put in the boning, hemmed the other side, added the waist ties and voila!
I’m new to this I know u say you should use the recommended plastic boning. But it recommends 1/2 in plastic and I only find 1/4 in bone in 1/2 in fabric is that what they mean? Also if I double the plastic boning do you think it will hold better under weight?

"Historically Accurate Adjacent" I love your sense of humour. Looks great. Thanks for the review :)
Finally have the time to get around to watching this! Just wow for your commitment of smashing through those projects and keeping up with the vlogs! 👊

@@sierralarars now I know why Marie Antoinette had such wide skirts. She was making room of all of her stuff. lol
I just bought this pattern, and would it be very difficult to alter the panniers to have a pocket opening?

Good idea!! I’ll keep that in mind!

How would I find a Marie Antoinette panniers? I need to make some so I can properly recreate Claire Frasier’s red dress from season 2 of Outlander.
I'll give the pattern a go, thanks Jason from England 🤓

Going through watching all your videos, and unless I’m gravely mistaken...I think Abbey Cox is the model on that pattern 😆 for the pannier
She sure is!
Wal mart sells for a little cheaper even with the 40% discount from joann’s.
