There was an amazing incident that my turkish islamic teacher told me. Actually 2 of them. Sometime during the founding of the ottoman empire, the sultan (forgot the name) was a guest to a muslim man overnight. He was about to sleep but the man told the sultan not to lay down yet because the quran was there in the room. After this the sultan did not sleep for i think 400 minutes. The empire was founded near 1299 and fell in 1918-22. It lasted as long as the sultan did not sleep to respest the quran!
The thing I like about our empire is that even though it wasn't as big as the Romans or the British, we owned practically all the lands that would be considered the cradles of civilization. Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Syria, Israel, Greece, Thracia, Crimea, Cyprus, Balkans, Caucasus, North Africa, and almost Malta and Austria.. Holding these ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse places was in the end, our ultimate end itself.
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries , understanding the Turks ' military organization , given the credit for the greatest empire since antiquity , became a major European preoccupation .
Être fort comme un Turc (‘to be strong like a turk’): This expression originates in the 15th century when the Turks had a reputation for being strong, almost unbeatable warriors due to their numerous victories. At the time, the Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of south-east Europe, north Africa and western Asia. It is said that François I, King of France, was gifted Turkish armour by Suleiman the Magnificent (the tenth and most famous sultan of the Ottoman Empire) during their alliance. When he wore it, he is said to have exclaimed: “Here I am now, strong as a Turk!”.

THE TURKS AND THE WEST. Europe stood in awe of the Ottomans who crushed many states and conquered vast territories, going, as all patriotic Turks will proudly point out, "all the way to the gates of Vienna." European literature is replete with the depictions of the Turk as the hated enemy. The English often thought of the Turk as awe-inspiring and destructive. Thomas Fuller wrote in The Holy Warre (1639): "The Turkish Empire is the greatest... the sun ever saw. ...Grass springeth not where the grand signior's horse setteth his foot."
