  • This is the story of Michael J. Elzea (1948 - 1993) more famously known as "Captain Whizzo" or just "Whizzo." This video is an excerpt from the feature documentary film "The Chateau Liberte'" produced and directed by W.J. McKay of Goth Mountain Films.
Captain Whizzo was a quirky artist who lived at the Chateau Liberte' in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California off and on between 1970 and 1975. Whizzo was the creator of the psychedelic light show method of using oils and water and dyes and projecting to a stage backdrop at music venues. He was also an accomplished illustrator and satirist whose cartoons appeared in High Times magazine regularly.
Whizzo worked with hundreds of famous classic rock acts from the 1960's to the 1990's. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead were just a few of the many rockstars who knew and worked with Whizzo. Whizzo toured the world with The Charlatans in the early 1990's. This film includes some previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage of The Charlatans on tour.
Captain Whizzo was a beloved figure at the Chateau Liberte' while he lived there and also after he left for New York City.
Interviewees shown in this excerpt include:
    Frank Andrick
    Mark Brown
    Dr. Jeff Childers
    Fred Cramer
    Kip Goozee
    Dale Ockerman
    Geoffrey Pond
This segment of the film features the following music:
    The Joker by Snail
I'm a Normal Guy by LenCat
U.S. Blues by the Grateful Dead
The Only One I Know by The Charlatans
    Synesthesia by Goth Mountain
The Chateau Liberte' film was written, produced, directed and narrated by W.J. McKay who spent time at the Chateau Liberte' in the late 1970's.

I never got to meet this guy but I sure wish I had. He was a legend around The Chateau Liberte' by the late 1970's when I was hanging around up there.

Jesus!!! I decided to Google Captain Whizzo and , BANG!, this came up. I played the Chateau many times with my old band Country Weather and the Captain was always a delight, a wonderful guy, a super nice fellow and, as has many others have said here, a true talent. Lovely person. But is that AI narration in the middle? It does not befit the Captain! He deserves an actual human being telling his tale.

I met Micheal in 67 in Santa Fe, we met this girl band, !8th Amendment. So Micheal was doing light shows for them. We went to a drug store on the Plaza and found one of those film strips you buy when your a tourist. So we got loaded on acid and Micheal was doing a light show at the house that night. The film strip was. Captain Whiz Bang"s Magic Lantern Show. Somehow we started calling Mike, Captain Whizzo. I became Bobby The Cabin Boy that night. Whizzo kept the name for his light shows. Well, after all these years, i still miss him...

@@ChateauLiberteFilmPage Yea, I was pissed off when he died. You know how that goes. I met him when he 18, he was old then... But I loved him like a brother. And the biggest gift he gave me was a sense of humor. That got me through alot of shit in life.
