You just saved me at least $300 with this video. You went above & beyond helpful w/ this tutorial. Your knowledge and detail is above any I have seen on RUclips. If I didn't organize the parts & screws in order & size like you said, I would have been screwed. It still took my 4 hours, but w/out you as my wing man Louis, their is no way I could have done this. My daughters mac book had 4 broken keys 3 months after buying it & I was suprised as it seemed that their was nothing spilled on hers.

You really inspire me. You are avant-guard to where youtube tutorial culture has gone. My A1286 which I have had for 3 years and has ALL of my student info, All of my recorded music, and all of my ex-girlfriends nudey pics that I have managed to save throughout my device evolution. On christmas I spilled Glenlivet all over my keyboard and now its fucked... but after watching your videos I feel confident enough to save lil' macky. You mentioned in this video that that 95% of the time power issues from spills can be fixed by replacing the keyboard. Today I opened up my mac and pulled out the battery, which was leaking fluid, and the fans, which were fine. My track-pad needs to be replaced as it smells like Dicaprio after Oscar night (The Revenent is his last hope), but my logic board and SSD appear to be in pristine condition, so I am thinking if just replace the trackpad, battery, and keyboard my macbook pro should be bigity-back to one-hun-ed YEE... or its fucked forever in which case I am running straight to nearest living thing and killing it. Regardless Louis I could watch your videos forever, you are fucking entertaining, its almost like you are always doing a bit, like a new-york-repair-guy bit, its SNL worthy (I mean when SNL was good. That comment would have been an insult if I was referencing SNL now. SNL sucks now btw. Oh, you don't watch SNL? Exactly, it sucks) More videos Louis!!!

I successfully repaired my 2009 unibody MBP, which had a malfunctioning keyboard after tipping a bottle of olive oil over it, with some guidance from this video. Also upgraded ram and added an extra sata instead of the optical drive. So now my daughter has a pretty decent laptop for schoolwork.
Thanks a lot, videos like these are great when you have a general idea what to do but just need that little extra info to get past the pitfalls.

Good video. A quick tip for you & everyone, in the video you mention to not throw all the screws together in a bin. It is very important to keep them grouped together by the disassembly step or part, but also keep them from accidentally getting hit off the work surface. The best (and cheap) way to do this is to use ice-cube trays. They are only a couple bucks for a set and each tray usually has around 16-20 cube pockets. Each step or parts screws go in its own pocket, and fill the next pockets in sequence. When you reassemble you already have your screws sorted and also a great way to remember the reassembly steps.

I've found that if you lose a keyboard screw that you can use one of the 4 corner screws from the iPhone 4 : )
& the keyboard sits better if you start in the middle and work your way out.

    Louis,
I want to thank you for this very excellent video. This past Sunday, I spilled a half a cup of multivitamin juice on my MacBook Pro A1297, 2009 model and straight away turned it upside down to let the liquid run out of the book. What a nightmare for me as I had this book since 2010 with no issue at all. The only mod is I replace the harddrive with an SSD drive.
Searching the net there were a lot of other tech giving the fast forward version of what you lay out here in 68 minutes. Great Job on this video and if i ever have a problem I would without a doubt ship my book back to you guys in the state as I am stationed overseas here in Germany. Stellar work on the video, Hoooah!!!

u are the man!!!....i have a macbook pro 13 inch that i thought was dead.the charging light would turn on but i couldn't get the laptop to turn on.this whole time i thought i had a dead motherboard. but for some reason idk how i came across ur video.i had no clue or intentions on replacing my keyboard.after watching your whole video i still didn't think the keyboard was my problem.so then i started reading the comments here because i just love to read comments.in one of ur comments u mentioned somewhere about trying to turn on the macbook by shorting the power pads.idk why i tried it because in my head i had a dead motherboard.but i tried it anyways and guess what,my macbook turned on!!!!!!!! i couldn't believe that it turned on, i thought it was dead.so then i started to wonder why it wouldn't turn on when i pressed the power button.so now im happy my computer is finally on but i still didn't know why it wouldn't turn on by hitting the power button.so as i read some more of your comments someone else mentioned about how their computer always boots into safe mode and u told them the button that boots into safe mode must be stuck.so i said to myself hey let me see if i can boot into safe mode. and guess what? i cant because my keys don't even work.so i figured out my problem just by reading the comments on your page.you saved me alot of money because i would have got a new motherboard and that wouldn't have fixed my problem. i honestly would have tried to replace everything before i even thought about replacing the keyboard.so thank you so much.but i will say this.i am not doin all that sh!t u just did so when i get some money ready i will bring u my macbook so u can put a new keyboard.someone in ur comments also mentioned that they heard nyc sirens on ur video lol i live in nyc too so it would be even easier for me to bring it to u.i didn't buy my macbook at the apple store,i got it used from a friend so im not even gonna bother apple to ask them for a price to repair it cause i don't wanna hear ridicules numbers they have a habit of doing that especially when u don't have apple care to begin with.imagine if i would have took my mac to any other repair shop they would have fooled me into buyin a new motherboard .so thank you again for your very helpful video and even more helpful comments.

run an ASD and see what it says. Try another drive in there with an install of OSX to see if your drive/install were F'd up by the liquid spill. Swap out RAM. Get to work!!

This was great, I really appreciate you making this and sharing your experience. IF I may, a little bit more detail on how those damned ribbon cable and fan plugs actually detached would have been better, but otherwise it was flawless. I got my macbook apart, replaced the keyboard, put back together, with not one thing missing or non-functional. You rock.

This past weekend I replaced the keyboard on my early 2011 MBP 13". I used my iMac to keep this video up and used it for reference several times (THANK YOU!). To those wondering if you can or should do this. It took me about 3 hours, mainly because I was being super cautious, but there were also slight variations on my specific machine. I had a couple of "oh crap" moments, where I wish I had sent it in to have it done. You will need the proper tools, do NOT try it without them.

  • @rossmanngroup

    I'm glad it worked.
Fir future reference, if broke, don't use a hair dryer. Find a dehumidifier. Five years ago when I was broke and lived in a dump, I'd put the dehumidifier in the bathroom or a closet and put the motherboard on the exhaust. The hair dryer can mess it up.
I am glad this helped - thanks for the comment!

Awesome tutorial Louis! I easily disassembled my 2010? Pro last night with only one issue. That trackpad seems to be depressed on the top. I might have pulled a bit hard on the cable so will dig in and investigate tonight. The laptop doesn't owe me anything. It's funny the comments about being dirty, where mine has been used for numerous years and survived a 26,000KM motorcycle ride over 5 months in soft luggage on the side of an offroad motorcycle through central america. It wasn't too dirty, but it's seen it's fair share of use. Dented, scratched, cracked screen (bike fell on it a few times), and now dipped in coffee. Wicked help with this tutorial!

To be honest, never had to replace a retina KB. If it's anything like the new airs you have to rip out a bunch of rivets, buy your own keyboard screws to screw it in, but it is definitely possible to replace the keyboard by itself on the a1398 retina.

Love the video and the no-nonsense approach :) Just for laughs I contacted my local repair shop and was told that Apple sells the keyboards together with the top case and so to replace it I had to pay around $300 for parts plus a flat labor rate of $129. I'll buy the keyboard from you and do it myself :)))) Thank you!

    Hi Louis
I spilled about 2 tablespoons worth of cappuccino with added sugar into the front and center of the keyboard of a 13 inch 2012 MacBook Pro (non-retina) with SSD about 4 weeks ago. Most of it pooled on top of the flat surfaces of the keys and trackpad.
I turned it off, threw a towel over the excess, and turned it upside down. Maybe a teaspoon plus of liquid drained out. I turned a blow dryer on low for a few minutes, and then turned it back on. It worked for about two minutes and then the screen display went haywire, then it shut itself off, only to emit a succession of 3 beeps.
I then turned it off, and later the next day it powered up normally. However, the battery seems to be losing power much more quickly now, and the fan engages quite a bit. (It used to rarely come on at all). All keys appear to be working normally. My concern is that there's some damage that will manifest progressively over time.
Do you have any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks for time and effort you put into the video.

Great video. I learnt about ultrasonic cleaners today amongst other things. :-)
I just finished replacing my first liquid spill damaged keyboard on a late 2011 A1278 before I watched this video (I was following some 11 minute one). The only thing that seems to have gone wrong is the keyboard backlight shines in the middle but not on the sides. Something iffy with the diffusing layers I reckon. I blame it on trying to rush the job (never a good idea), but the dude had a flight to catch in the morning. Will have to wait til he brings it back to sort it out.

thanks for the reply, Louis. I'll just use lots of rubbing alcohol to remove the minor splash of coffee that led to all this. It's amazing how much damage such a small spill can cause!
And then I'll be using a keyboard protector .....

Subscribed! A few months ago a teeny tiny drop of water went under the shift key and by sheer chance fucked it (shout out to the Karabiner application to allow me an alternate left shift key). After debating whether to let the Moron Bar replace it and bill me an extortionate amount, or live with it I decided I've had a few experiences repairing laptops in the past, and that I could do this myself. I watched several RUclips videos-including the ones with the REALLY good techno music throughout, but this was by far the most informative and interesting one. I'm awaiting the new keyboards arrival from the US (non-standard US layout on a UK machine), and feel confident that with the knowledge I've picked up in this video that I'll have it back to 100% working order in no time!
Alternatively, I'll fuck it up beyond my repair capabilities and drink the pain of having a deflated ego away. But either way, thanks! :D

the backlight is adhesed around the sides, I do not glue that back. It is so fragile, with the miniscule adhesive there, it is simple to break when removing. To use MY adhesive on that would just be a big middle finger to the next dude who works on the machine.
In terms of goo, sometimes it is stuck down really hard. That does happen, and is usually the result of whatever was spilled on th keyboard.

Get an ultrasonic that sweeps frequencies - up and down - so the board it not being hit with the same frequency over and over again. High end ones do this, cheap jewelry cleaners do not.
Improper mixtures of the chemicals can ruin the board, keeping it in there for an hour can kill the board, turning it on without properly drying it can kill the board, but just the act of dunking it in there isn't going to kill it. That's for people with excessive paranoia & OCD.

I put together this thing which was a combination of a bunch of magnets and an ice cube tray to hold screws, so I had separate easy to grab slots for every screw. I could fit each icetray in the slot with the computer, I arranged them in the chronological order that I removed them from the laptop. Without it I would have been totally lost.

Louis Rossmann thank you for this great tutorial. i just did the replacement. i used a brand new keyboard but the following keys won't work F2, 3, e, d and c - the whole row except space key - space key works fine. what do you think is the problem? is it possible that i bought a damaged keyboard? or is it the flat connection cable? but i was very careful while connecting it. thanks for your advice... best regards vom switzerland

I don't sell logic boards on my site because it is an incredible pain in the ass supporting them. They're expensive, incredibly easy to break, and can only be sold for minimal markup.
However, I do have tons lying around... so what do you need? Gimme an 820- number & I'll look it up.

For someone like me who has done nothing more than upgrading memory this was fairly easy. As long as you keep all those damn screws straight and remain patient it works. The biggest bitch for me was attaching the keyboard and backlight cables. It took me 2 hours to attach them and I still don't know how I did it!

Good video. I took my macbook pro 2011 i7 back to apple and they tried to charge me $545 for a topcase when all i needed was a new keyboard with power button. I'm a tech myself; but I just didn' want to do it. But I found a new keyboard on ebay for $39 and I've taken it apart and cleaned all the components and replaced the orignal thermal paste with artic silver on both GPU/CPU. and i'm just waiting on my keyboard to arrive.

Replaced a keyboard tonight, 56 screws like eyeglass screws, I counted 46 more indentations that they could have added a few more (sarcasm, eyes rolled). Just think some guy got paid big bucks for that concept and another high roller agreed with him.....they both should get a good beating for a design like that it's just plain unnecessary and why while I repair them you couldn't give me a macbook, iphone, ipad or ipod. Too much BS engineering to look "pretty". Your videos are great! Thanks for contributing to our continuing education!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started at 9 pm and took my time, but I made a few mistakes reassembling the board, forcing me to reopen the case two times: 1; when I placed the power button springy washer and later realized it goes BETWEEN the button and the contact (doh), 2; when I placed the plastic clip guides (the ones on the sides of the case that have letters NSK and some numbers) upside-down (double doh). The rest took forever only because I decided to take my time and do it slow... had I not made mistakes, I might have finished in 2 hours... at least I have a macbook that types like a new machine (woohoo). I know regular PCs, but the macbook was a challenge and a half, so even though you missed a few things (which is totally reasonable, nobody can account for everything, and also, i had an A1297 which was a bit different) your guided video was the most thorough walkthrough I could ask for! thanks again!

Thank you for your video, it is very helpful! A few things that you need to work on is to learn how to use a camera better and also show us what you are doing when you are explaining cleaning and other procedures. I haven't seen most of your 70 minutes work and a visual aid is far better than sound only. Thanks again for sharing this!

      Hi,
This video is free, not ad supported in any way. I make $0 off of this video, as such, I am aware the camera angles suck, the camera work sucks, the tripod sucks... and hell, I was too lazy for half of it to really bother adjusting. It's part of what one gets for free.
      Thanks for your feedback.

    • @AdeGroen
      @AdeGroen 10 лет назад

ok :) don't get too defensive, many things that are free are also of good quality.

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  10 лет назад +1

Not defensive, I just feel the "need" to correct the word need.
Note the word "need" in your original post - as if it is REQUIRED that the free content be improved. I am simply pointing out that.. it really does not have to be. :) At all! In fact, I could delete every video on this channel, and I would still be fine! As this channel generates zero income, there is no "need" for anything. :)
If I had a "need" to provide the best free content on the internet.... I wouldn't be using a $100 camcorder and a broken tripod. Your feedback has been noted though. Thank you!!

    • @AdeGroen
      @AdeGroen 10 лет назад

If you are thinking only at money , than yeah, you can delete all your video files . If you wanted to help other people for free, than a constructive feedback would help you help other people even more than now. So you don't NEED to change anything of course :) English is not my first language so maybe I did not express myself very well in my first comment, but I thought you would understand that it was not meant to put your work down, but just to give you some ideas and feedback.
      Anyways, have fun! BYE!

Eventually, you will get a board where the ultrasonic winds up killing something... and you know what? Whatever wound up failing after the THIRTY SECOND dunk in the UC probably would've died anyway 1-2 months down the line after you gave it back to the customer. So it's better you find out now and replace the shit so they don't come back a month later accusing you of ruining their computer.
Take pictures of the corroded sections so you hae a hint as to where the problem was before UCing

    Hey Louis Awesome Video,
Okie here is the thing, My Son spilled some tea over on my wife's mac book pro 15". She switched off immediately. After seeing your other video, I dissembled the whole mac book and wiped out any traces of water. When I started it back, some keys were not working. So I had to open everything again and this time I cleaned the keyboard as well. Now Mac Book is turning on, but none of the keys (including the power key) is not working. I checked the cable which connects the upper body keyboard to the logic board..with no luck. Am sitting here in India, please suggest me, where am I going wrong. Am leaving my macbook dismantled for now...Will wait for your revert.
    Best

    Dear Mr Rossmann,
Many thanks for your posts on uTube, they are friendly, helpful and absorbing, particularly this one on which I am posting.
I'm an old man now and have been using Macs since the LCII came on the market; I work within the printing industry.
Since 1991 I have religiously preached to all, "Back up your work & don't have any drinks at your work station".
Backing up has never been a problem for me, nor has the drink issue, but guess what?
I'm now retired and was passing my desk last week with an opened bottle of Mtn Dew in my hand. I halted for a couple of seconds, just to check an email that had just pinged at me...
    ... need I say more?
Soda on my MacBook Pro 17". Bitch! Unbelievable!
Hopefully you'll clue me in with the answer to two questions please.
I'm going to poach the board with the aid of ultrasound. What temperature and for how long please? These were the only omissions from your life-saver video post.
I hope you'll be able to respond soon, but in the mean time, I send you my good wishes.
    Kindest regards.

    I call BS.
If you set it to 80c and leave it in for a half hour, you'll mess up the board. I agree with this. However, setting it to 50c and placing the board in a proper solution of distilled water and bransonic EC is just fine.
It very often brings back a board that soapy water and a toothbrush don't do anything to. I can't count the amount of times manual cleaning in soapy water & drying in isopropanol alcohol failed where the ultrasonic succeeded.

What I do need is some friendly advice
Macbook was waterdamaged, so I cleaned it and it will boot up when I do the "hold power for 10 s, connect mag power, then connect battery" thing, but the screen turns off after about 20 seconds. The trackpad works, same with all the keys, although the computer doesn't always respond. The caps lock with go on and off intermittently, after I press it, and the computer seems to try to sleep if I don't press any keys.
    Help?

Hi Louis, I would like to know what interior parts of this Macbook you replaced. I'm planning to tear down my Macbook Pro (15", Early 2011 version), but I can't tell what parts need replacement. The main problems I have are being unable to use 3 keys, and "freezing" issues with audio/videos. Basically whenever I watch/listen to a video/audio, the screen would freeze, then continue on playing without sound, then the sound would show up again, then go back to playing without sound. I saw from your video how the speakers were connected to the logic board, so I was wondering if based on my situation, would I need to get the logic board replaced/ or should I just continue to rub alcohol on it, and expect the audio/video issue to get cured from there? And also, what parts of the keyboard would I need to get replaced? I see that there are 2 parts to a keyboard - the black elastic film, and the actual keyboard itself. Do you think I need to replace both, or just rub them with alcohol like the logic board? Sorry for asking too much, I would really like your advice on this. You seem like a legitimate pro technician.
